Earning Points for Government Payments via Credit Card

Hi All.

I'm self employed and have to pay my Income Tax and also GST every 3 months.
I'm using Coles Mastercard for all my expenses since 2013. Recently they have changed the rules and not paying any flybuys point for government payment.

Appreciate if you guys can introduce a new card to me so I can collect points (Qantas/Flybuys/etc) for my GST and Tax payment.

  • Are you using BPay or normal CC payment?

They all have that restriction as far as I know.

I have gotten around some of these restrictions by paying with PayPal - doubt Gov't takes that.

    EDIT: "Rules" not "Roles"

    • Either way I was getting my point before, But they have stop that.

        I have the same problem.

Most Gov't agencies I deal with either don't accept AMEX or surcharge for using them.
Normally the master/visa card won't give points for Gov't spending.
I actually paid via Auspost Paypal and my credit card company was still able to identify it was a Gov't transaction.

  • I do know that Amex give 50% points on payments to AusPost, not sure about the other government depts. If you are in the Amex rewards scheme then you can transfer the points to the airlines

    • I only got half a point per $ at ozpost.

Yep, exactly what I said "50% points on payments to AusPost'. 50% means 50 parts per centum (100), viz. half.

        • I normally get 2 points per $. So at OzPost that works out to 25% points.

Pm me if you would like to know. I can’t tell you publicly here.

  • i usually stock up on those coles prepaid mastercards with my credit cards when they have a big flybuys bonus points offer that overides the $5 fee and then use the gift cards to pay the ato as they only charge 0.15%. failing that get a st George cc or use one of the other biz b2b platforms ie B2Bpay Official Qantas Partner | Earn Up To 12,000 Bonus Points‎
    www.b2bpay.com.au/‎

  • Can use something like B2BPay, keep in mind that there are fees, but if you have a high points earning card it might work out for you.

  • What cost is involved on B2B ? Transaction or annual fee ?

I use Reward Pay and only recently started using B2B. Reward pay charge 2.7%(inc GST) and B2B charge 2.64% (inc GST) - I can't remember what B2B's Visa/MC rates are but would assume much less. I only use the above for my Amex cards. No annual fees associated with both programs.
