These cheapo USB Sticks with 3 - 4MB/sec write speeds are awful to use with large sized files.

Example - to copy a 4GB DVD ISO… at 3.9MB/sec = 1025 seconds = 17 minutes (if you ever actually ever got 3.9MB/sec sustained transfer speed from the thing!)

Most reasonable USB 2.0 portable hard drives would be about 10 times faster than that!

      • -5

Yeah I would never buy such a low speed thumb drive. I would rather spend 50% more on a higher speed one.
These cheap thumb drives are only for those who know nothing about write speed/read speed or those who just want a temporary storage very urgently.

        • +6

There are plenty of reasons why people would buy a slower one for a lower price. Just because these don't suit your needs doesn't mean they're not applicable to others, and painting them all as ignorant isn't fair and just reflects on you.

I bought a 16gig Toshi stick for $22. I use it for music in the car and others at work use them for a range of uses. There's no different in read speed for the uses that I use these for, and I'm not going to drag around a portable hard drive in my pocket at work.

        • I was using the Hard Drive as a comparison - anybody who's been frustrated buy how slow a USB HDD is would then be able to relate to the fact that these cheap thumb drives are about 10 times slower for writing!

If you only use it for PLAYING music, then the read speed is what matters, and even 2MB/sec is more than fast enough. Of course you wouldn't drag around a portable HDD for that kind of use.

"…only for those who know nothing.."

You are sooo funny, esp considering your nick!

To Boldly insult where no man has insulted before. Meaningless ramble and gross overstatement.

  • I think this is available in VIC too. Forgot where I saw the ad though.

  • +1

Grabbed one when passing HN in Fountain Lakes (gate), Vic.

Actually, I got a verbatim as they had sold out of the promoted Toshiba, and were offering Lexar or Verbatim as stock fillers when asked.

It writes a little slow at around 3mb/sec, which is slow but not an issue if you are dumping stuff on it infrequently for playback on a TV usb port in another room :)

They also had 250Gb USB powered 2.5" drives for $45, and 640gb for $97 I think. There were some 750Gb in the same bin and I was thinking of trying that on the salesguy…. :0 I just wasn't sure if they work plugged into the side of a Plasma TV.

Please post where I can buy 12x 8Gb USB sticks for 10 US cents.

Such broad sweeping idiocy doesn't become you, does it?

Nice comment eSold, considering the rubbish you post here as a bargain.

I'd rather this reasonable deal than your wild exaggerations.

Any price from Harvey Norman can usually be beaten by any of their competitors. Gerry Harvey has not become a billionaire by handing out lots of bargains to punters. Given that Gerry dislikes competition so much, it is in competitors that one should look for bargains. The Good Guys is where you are more likely to find bargains and consistently lower prices.

    • +3

Not really. HN is known for having decent loss leader deals to get punters sucked in to their big "sales". They hope to get people in the door and upsell. I have taken advantage a few times, they had a 2TB external HDD for 99 last year which was a very good price at the time and a Canon Ixus for 199 which was 50 less than everywhere else, plus got a free ipod out of it making it a really sweet deal.

Truth is, most of the big chains will offer good deals now and again, you just have to keep your eyes peeled.

    • +1

Yea, but in this case this is a bargain. Other competitor's will beat/pricematch but if it wasn't for Harvey Norman selling this usb drive at this price in the first place, the other stores wouldn't have nothing to pricematch.
