The much hyped Phillips SHP9500 for about half price at AliExpress: these are open-backed monitor headphones that are really good for listening at home. Head-fi loves them. This isn't the cheapest price they were $58 once in 2015) but they've been discontinued resulting in high prices, so this is a good opportunity to grab one before they disappear of the face of the earth. I'd get a pair myself if I didn't have two(!) pairs of HD681 EVOs.

While these headphones have been at lower prices before, they no longer are offered at discount. It is actually surprising to see this, because since they have been discontinued their prices have went through the roof.

There are a lot of reviews for them, none give them a bad review, many praise their qualities, some even compare them to much higher priced headphones.

Here is my favourite review of these headphones: https://youtu.be/aipXii-qWiQ

Although I have not tested or used them myself, honestly all I have heard is good things about them.

If you don't mind open-headphones (that leak sound out), they are great for gaming. Probably the best at this price range for open-headphones actually. Comfort is great (they are massive too), the sound stage is wide, and the imaging is good.

  • Having never ordered anything off Ali Express before, can we assume these are genuine?

    • have ordered the wiha screwdriver set from there. looks legit
      i got one regardless.

      • I went ahead and ordered a pair, so if anyone wants an answer… I'll update this thread in a month or two when they arrive ;)

  • I have a pair. They're very comfortable and sound great.

  • Can I connect these to an Android phone?

    • Yes. You can

      • Does it need an adapter?

        • No adaptor needed. It comes with a removable 3.5" cable

    • Depends on the phone. Newer phones sometimes don't have a standard 3.5mm Jack, so you might need an adapter.

  • Anyone tried both these and the philips fidelio x2? Can you compare them?

      • I did that before posting. I would like somebody else's perspective.

actually I went from this to the fidelio, but I'm not an audiophile so my opinion my not be valid: it did not greatly improve my audio experience. Fidelio is bigger and heavier (much better build quality), I don't mind because I only use it on the PC. the ear cushions are more comfortable but attracts a lot of dust due to the material. I honestly don't even listen to music that much so a bit of a waste. For my use case shp9500 is fine, but I sold it for a profit so can't complain.

  • Many say that if you pair these with a mic (like the V-MODA BoomPro), it beats a lot of gaming headsets in terms of sound quality.

Anyone know how they compare to the Astro A40s or HyperX Cloud Alphas?

    • Just make sure you buy it off Amazon, the AliExpress ones are not legit ones.

  • I actually bought these back in 2015 from the deal from COTD for about $60 and have been using them ever since. Not sure what to compare them too, but they do sound very good (I haven't owned many sets of cans but these are by far the best i have owned). They're also very comfortable with big soft over ear pads head band.

I also bought a modmic and use these as my gaming headset.

It's weird to see these being sold at twice the price almost three and a half years later.

    • I paid US$50 when I got mine from US two years ago. Prices can skyrocket when a product receives rave reviews and it's discontinued. Same with Sennheiser HD598.

  • The OzBargainer in me is resisting buying these because they sold for $60 3 years ago. Anyone compared these to UE6000 which I have, and like, but they are a bit heavy?

    • I'm in the same boat. A part of me feels silly paying more for what they were sold for years ago. Are they still good value at this price or is it a bargain in comparison to what it goes for these days?

      • +1

I also purchased this back in 2015 as part of the COTD deal, and around the same time I purchased my Hifiman HE400. I pair mine with an O2 DAC+Amp, and putting both on I actually can't discern any noticeable difference, however I'm also no audiophile so take this with a grain of salt since the HE400 is about 4-5x the price back in the day. I still use my HE400 rather than the Philips simply because I paid good money for it, but would not hesitate to put the Philips on in a heartbeat.

I don't think you can quite compare the Philips against the UE6000, since the UE6000 has noise canceling and it closed-back. The Philips will give you a soundstage so wide you'll feel like you're in a concert, however expect everyone at home to know what you're listening to.

        • Thank you so much! I'll grab a pair to see what the fuss is about

  • Great headphones at a great price. I have 2 pairs.
One is used with PSVR and I love the open design which creates a larger surround sound stage and lets you still be connected to the world (you can hear if the doorbell rings or someone is talking to you).
The second pair is used in conjunction with a Vmoda boom mic for PC games. An awesome combination that craps all over HyperX (I have a set of them also).

I have used them for music and they are excellent for the price. Don't expect big heavy bass or piercing treble, these are very well balanced.

They are extremely comfortable, so much so that they've never bothered me, even after 4 hour gaming sessions.

The only issue is if you can live with open headphones or not. For my purposes I'd always choose the open design, but they're not much good if you want privacy and don't want others to hear.

I've definitely never regretted my purchase and I paid roughly $185 per pair around 2 years ago.

    • craps all over HyperX

How so? Rtings give them similar ratings.

  • Not really a great deal, I bought a pair for $55 USD
