External SSD vs Internal SSD with Enclosure

I was about to pull the pin on a Samsung T5 External SSD from Officeworks.

https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/samsung-25…

I then noticed for the same price I could double my storage with a Samsung 860 EVO (or a WD Blue SSD) in an enclosure.

What am I missing? Is there any disadvantages with using an internal in an enclosure vs a dedicated external drive?

Thanks in adance.

nope, it will work just fine. However, I have one of the Orico transparent enclosure. It's made of plastic, and doesn't lock properly. It could be just mine that has this problem though.

If you are thinking to use the SSD for a long period of time, a aluminium enclosure might be a better option, as it can act as a heat sink when the SSD gets warm.

    • Cheers for the advice.

    • The orico plastic case creaks a lot too, the material is very thin and if you were to accidentally sit on it, the case would probably break.

So many deals on here for ssd that are cheaper.

You're paying triple the price compared to the link.

I don't think there is a that much of a difference for basic computing, gaming and storing data between ssd. External ssd is always going to be more expensive.

    • Haven't really hunted around. I just provided the links for examples.

I'm hoping to get something today and they are the most convenient.

    T5 has usb type-C

also, transfer speed from generic case may varies

    note T5 250gb , was $99

    • I'll just be plugging into a regular USB 3.0 port.

If I could get the T5 for $99 I'd do that, however I've lost the keys to my Delorean.

      Unless it's still $99 somewhere?

      • I'll just be plugging into a regular USB 3.0 port

Have you considered just a USB 3.0 (or even 3.1) flash drive?

        • Do flash drives offer the same performance and reliability of SSD (and storage capacity)?

Please excuse my stupid questions…. I'm nerdy but I don't understand the intricacies of data storage :)

I wouldn't want any lower than 256gb though, and I'd prefer the form factor of the external SSD.

I just figure for about $140 I could get 500gb external SSD (if I go the enclosure route). Seems pretty good, providing it performs just as well as a dedicated external.

        • @SpottyMoose: Speed-wise they're not that far apart (especially on USB3.0 instead of USB3.1/type-c) unless you're dealing with massive file sizes. USB drives are just a lot more convenient, but they really top out at about 256GB for reasonable prices. If you're looking at 500GB or more, yeah the SSD + enclosure idea works well.

          @HighAndDry:
Speed wise they are far apart, in all aspects.

They use a cheaper form of memory which is also more prone to failure.

Flash drives are for temporary storage. SSD is for working off.

        • @StickMan: The fastest USB flash drives have up to 500MB/s read/write. USB3.0 only goes up to about 600MB/s. There literally can't be a large speed difference so long as OP is using USB3.0 spec connections.

T5 uses top Samsung chips. It’s one device, no connectors. It has 2-3yr warranty. Half the size of SSD+enclosure. Better drop resistance by far.

With enclosure, you need to pay a little more for a quality aluminium one, and check reviews to make sure the SATA controller inside can hit the levels of T5.

If you want SPEED, look at the new Samsung X5 drive. Or get an m.2 drive and enclosure. Be prepared for hugely increased costs.

    Thanks everyone.

I ended up buying the Samsung T5 500GB from Officeworks for $199 (after a price match).

    Convenience won… 😀

    • I'm actually a little envious. I'm a bit of a tech-head, and I love my gadgets and things, but I literally don't work in the field at all (or do anything related to the field - I don't even edit videos for fun), so I have zero justification to ever spend that much on something like that. But I've played around with a few and they just… scream "we're in the future now!"

    • Priced matched where?

    • It just came up at 187 .

Quite close to having one shipped from US Amazon.

      • LOL. Them's the breaks guess.
