Might as well go for the $99 bluetooth version. I used to tell people to spring for the wifi because of how short the bluetooth range is but with all the issues I've had with wifi I would say th extra $79 is not worth it.

    • What issues are you getting? I love the fact that you can remote start.

      • Constant disconnects and also issues with the timer turning itself off. Timer issue is so bad I just use my phone now, Anova has acknowledged the bug and said they have someone working on it but that was last year.

        • I have the same issue with wifi disconnections

I have the wifi model and I agree.

Whether or not you use the Wifi component, the extra 100W of heating power might be of interest if you need to do things quickly.
Frankly however, quickly is very much against the Sous Vide philosophy.

    • Good point, I forgot about that. Still is an extra 100w worth almost double the price? From memory the max water volume is slightly lower and it may take a a minute or two longer to heat up but not much.

      • use a foam box instead of metal pot and the insulation makes up for the 100w difference ….

  • Any suggestions on where to get the Sous Vide bags?

For what I use it for with a low enough temp, Australian zip-lock bags in water bath method is fine.

ikea has double zip lock bags of assorted sizes. wither that or wait for vacuum sealers to go on sale at aldi

      • Ikea ones will rip if you do longer cooks (overnight) at higher temps.

The Aldi vacuum sealer + bag works great. Kmart ones are crap.

    • I've got the aldi sealer/bags. Quite happy with it. They roll them out twice a year

  • Besides wifi issues there is also a moisture problem caused from the steam which ultimately destroys the temperature controller. Anova are very aware of this major problem but if the warranty has expired well thats all she wrote folks.

    • I have read about this, any suggestions on how to avoid the steam damaging the unit?

      • I just use cling wrap. Trick is to ensure a tight seal with the machine - no steam damage whatsoever. Mine is 2 years old and gets used almost daily so much so that I don't even bother taking it out of the water.

Will definitely pick up a second unit when prices come down further.

    • Isn't that from people making cutouts in their container lids for the Anova which then directs all the steam towards the unit? I use ping pong balls for this reason as the steam is spread across the surface of the bath.

although its doubtful that ping pong balls melt or anything, they are at the end of the day not food safe and might leech something…

        • +1

but then will that something leech into the vacuum sealed/zip lock bags? I guess fumes are a potential hazard.

        • Mine are actually 'sous vide balls' that are safe up to 220degrees and BPA free.

        • @RtN:
thats fair. i was thinking more like when cooking eggs since the shells are porous at the end of the day

      • Is that really a thing? I just bought a container with a lid with the intention of drilling a hole.

        • Yep. Not had it myself but I've read multiple places that if the seal isn't perfect around the unit then all the steam will exit there and ruin the electronics. What you could do is drill a few more holes around the lid for steam to escape elsewhere. Even with a single layer of 'sous vide balls' barely covering the surface of my bath I can do overnight cooks without having to do any topping up so you'll be fine with a few more holes.

    • Just got an email today saying they extended their warranty so it's a two year warranty now

Their usual deal is $159 isn't it?

  • I have the wifi and I love it, but this price is Avg. $99 for Bluetooth is great, I bought my wifi for $149 so I would wait.

  • Heh… I got incredibly lucky.

I emailed them when the BT model went on sale asking for a code for myself to bring it down to $149.

They took ages and only sent me the code today (unique code unfortunately). Coincidently today the unit dropped to $179, so when I added the code it went down to $125 for the Wifi model.

    Stoked..
