  • Gun phone. Too bad it no OLED.

    • +6

Given the flagship SoC, other specs and sub $500 price you would expect some trade offs.

    • +2

Apple weren't even AMOLED until this year and they have been reaming their customers for years!

OP can you do a deal on Mi max 3, 6gb ram, happy to buy two.

  • +2

i am after the 8gb global version. Any deals on that?

  • Confused on the OS - is it Android or not?

    • It is android. MIUI is essentially xiaomi's skin/interface.
      I.e. Huawei's interface is EMUI

      • With poco launcher

      • +1

        Like Samsung's Touchwiz then

        Thank you

        • +1

Hated Touchwiz. I like MIUI. Seems to be a mixed bag though. Some hate it, some like it.

      Its Andross

  • Obligatory : b28?

    • +3

The answer is no b28 unfortunately

    • +5

      no b28
      no NFC
      no OLED

      • +1

B28, NFC and I’d be sold. Surely these features don’t bump the price up too much..

        • +1

I agree the cost is very small. These handsets are primarily aimed at the Indian market, where price matters, so the features are built to exactly match that market. So what we need is for carriers in India to use Band 28:
          * There was an Asia-pacific wide plan to get this spectrum used in the region: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asia-Pacific_Telecommunity_ban…
          * In 2015 a variety of Indian carriers came out against auctioning the band 28, because … drull-roll please …. there were not enough devices that support it: https://indianexpress.com/article/technology/tech-news-techn… (real chicken-and-egg problem right there).
          * Nevertheless, the Indian government did try to auction the band 28 spectrum in 2016 …. but they set that reserve price too high, so nobody bid: https://gavnit.com/posts-469
          * So we'd need the auction to happen again, but with sensible reserves, and/or for more devices to come out with band 28 support (which won't happen until it's a necessity in India).

And for NFC, we'd need paywave / tap-and-go / contactless payments to really take off in India, and these phones would all have that feature:
          * I don't know when paywave / tap and go launched in India, but when I google "paywave india" there are pages and videos from 2017, 2018, explaining that it's a new way to pay, how it works, etc. My takeaway is that it looks like a pretty recent innovation in that market, so all the stuff that Australia went through (5 or so years ago?), about getting new contactless cards issued and into people's wallets, getting people comfortable with the technology, getting it accepted widely and widespread, all that needs to happen first, and then google pay / apple pay is that layer that comes next and builds on top of that, for having one device with a virtual wallet of cards that can be tokenized for individual contactless transactions. So it looks to me like this will come, but it just needs time.

The other feature that I always want from phones is SIM 1, SIM 2, and SD card is 3 separate slots (instead of SIM 1 + either SIM 2 OR SD card). This has to be even cheaper to add than the other 2 features, since there is no additional electronics required, just an extra physical slot. Hopefully this one becomes widespread too.

  • Thanks for great post. Do u have any deal with ZMI qb820 power bank? it's available to buy from Tabao. When would be available to buy?

Can someone who has the wireless charger tell me how fast it is?
I need a good wireless charger for my galaxy S8, would this be the one?

    • It says it's QC3.. so theoretically, it should be good.

Having said that, wireless charging is rarely up to cable speed.

      • Hmm on second thought I might just hold out for a while and wait for a wireless charger deal that's local because I'm in WA and don't want to wait a month for a charger.
Thanks for the suggestion though, I might grab one for someone else if they need it.

        • +2

I might grab one for someone else if they need it.

          I'll take 2 please

        • @bobzor bargain: haha sorry brother I meant a family member

  • +1

    Does this inlcude GST?

    • +1

Probably not but even then it doesn't matter unless you're looking to make a tax claim. Customs won't knock on your door and demand the GST. It's not their responsibility nor is it yours.

      • +1

Do you know if you can make TRS claims on imports now, since you paid the GST and the seller is required to have an ABN?

    • GST confirmed included by OP

  • What's all the fuzz about this phone …

150 upvotes in the other deal.
Never heard of this model before.

I guess it can't be too bad with so many upvotes.

    • Where is the other deal?

      • +1

        That would be mine :P

        • @clear Now if you guys posted a deal on the emerald or jade version of mi mix 2s i'll be all over it

        • @ilikeblue: or maybe he can beat this post hehe

        • @ilikeblue:
Yep hanging out for a good deal on the Mi Mix 2s

        • @Cits: Have you looked at the jade colour? IMO that's the best looking phone in the market atm, would gladly pay retail price for it lol

    • +7

Like did you even had a look at the specs and then at the price?

    • depends what the people up voting are acustomed to ….if you are from china no nfc and no band band 28 would be normal for a phone.

also some people like to,load their own preffered ROMs,

so depends what the upvotes value in a phone.

      • Agree. Same like picking up wife. Your preference and value differs from neighbour next door.

  • +2

Looking to this with Snapdragon 845 now I realise mi max 3 is actually so so in specs (Sd 636)

  • OP, is this global edition?

  • Grabbed the charger, cheers

  • Can you install apps from playstore with this phone?

    • yes its a legit globally sold phone made by xiaomi. insane specs although its made of plastic to cut costs

  • Bit tricky to change the country/shipping to australia, but for me it worked the 3rd time I tried, so don't give up if at 1st it doesnt work.

  • Great phone, unfortunately no NFC. Any equivalents deals on NFC phones?

  • Unless you want raw gaming power get this instead https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/399705

  • Hows the camera on it compared to a Samsung S7?

    • second this. want to know if this is comparable with S8 or Huawai P10, mate 10

      • just by using logic, pico will be worse. than flagship phones.
        come on….

how much worse? that is subjective.

    • Poco F1 does not seem to have OIS. Although this may not be such a big deal with daylight photos and in situations where there's adequate light, it won't help with low light situations.

  • Wow an awesome price! Thanks!

  • Interms of value this phone reminds me of the nexus 5.

  • I'm happy with my Poco F1 :) Bought it when I was in Singapore.
