  • Great price, but I though Mi Max 2 had android 7?
And perhaps, an update to android 8?

    • +1

Yeah I'm rocking miui 9.6.3.0 and it's Android 7 on my mi max 2

  • +1

Bargain. Is this international version or chinese version? Thanks

    • +4

Play store included. It's international version as it's coming from Malaysia. All specs point to international version.

      • How did you know it has play store and and coming from Malaysia, for those of us who were unsure and didn't click buy fast enough

        • It's fulfilled by Techinsea which sells on Lazada (major Malaysian online store) and signs point to it being a Maylasian company. Also Catch is Australian so they wouldn't sell a
          version without play store installed.

It would cause major issues for them and they would have put a disclaimer if there was no play store.

Checking the Xiaomi site and GSM arena the specs match the international version.

  • Cant go wrong for the price. Good find

  • I'm on Vodafone does it use band 28?

    • +1

      No

      • Ta!

      • Are you sure? I'm with Vodafone and had issues in rural areas with no b28. Partners phone was fine (has b28).

    • +1

Do you mean 'does Vodafone use band 28' or 'does this phone have band 28'?

      • +4

Either way the answer is the same

  • Hows this compare to the xiaomi redmi note 5 ?

    • +1

Bigger screen, IR Blaster (remote control) fun times.

      • The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 also has an IR blaster

      • Redmi note 5 has IR Blaster.

    • +2

The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 has better battery life, a bigger screen, stereo speaker and USB Type-C. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 has a better Soc, better cameras, Bluetooth 5.0 instead of 4.2, and maybe more updates.

  • My Mi Max just died…..Ill probably jump on this one!

    • +3

      It's actually a downgrade

      • I agree mostly, although the max 2 is far more durable. I've dropped this a couple times, nothing bad - every time I dropped my mind max, the whole screen would pop out, destroying the side buttons.

I miss the color changing led, but don't notice the CPU downgrade really, and the battery life seems a fair bit better on the 2…

        I'm getting the 3 soon

    • +10

Is that how your Mi Max died?

  • Can anyone with the phone confirm what netflix resolution they get?

    • How do I check?

      • A bit late now but I would appreciate it if you could still check. Search for Test Patterns on netflix and let the video reach the highest resolution. The resolution will be shown on the top right of the screen.

        • +2

          Getting 960x540

  • If you want the ultimate battery phone this is it. I've had one for a year and this is a great price. I'm running miui 10 beta with no problems at all and using every day. Brilliant phone for this price.
I've just updated to the mi max 3. $370 delivered from AliExpress.

    • 370 that is lowest ever you should post it separately

      • That was for the 4gb ram version including glass and tpu case with DHL shipping. Seems to be the going price

        • I think I found it at AliExpress. AUD 372. Hmm but I want blue … Oh. That 372 and then plus GST, right?

        • +1

@dragonindespair: I paid 354 plus GST. The seller is Mi Global Store. It took 9 days to arrive

        • @opelcalibra: good price. And you aware about bad global rom from resellers creating issues and how to reflash, right? All good now?

        • @dragonindespair: I'm not but I will look into it now. Thanks

        • @opelcalibra: well I you have zero issue maybe just get the bootloader unlock code first and don't flash

  • I loved my Mi Max. It's a biggg phone and I miss it. So tempted to go phablet again.

    • +2

Mi max 3 for you. 6.99 inch. Live the dream.

  • +1

Android 6 and miui 8 that's why it's this price bit it's a great deal.

    • +3

It has MIUI 9.6 and Android 7 currently.

      • and someone is running miui 10 beta without issues

    • It's android 7. Miui 9

  • Snapdragon 625 is pretty would rather the redmi note 5 for not much more unless you need the extra inch

  • should recommend this to the guy in the forums who was looking for a phone around 150$ fits his requirements perfectly

  • "There's no band 28 but I have 0 issues as I'm with Optus and when I was on Telstra it just went to 4G instead of 4G plus in certain areas."

should be: There's no band 28 but I have 0 issues as I'm with Voda??

    • As I said before, Voda doesn't use band 28. So those who choose to use it will not have issues with this phone.

    • I have used this phone for a few months with Vodafone and never had any issue. Both Sims worked fine.

  • -1

No band 28, otherwise killer deal!
I read last night that Xiaomi are starting to officially enter the US market in late 2018. It must be true because I read it on wiki.
Hopefully will mean more anglicised Xiaomi tech

    • Band 28 is the ozbargain meme of the year. I've learnt it's not really relevant as 4G doesn't rely on Band 28 only H+ and 90 percent of the time you run the other bands

      • LOL,sign me up for the t-shirt…. inc 20% discount with cash rewards

So you saying its an old house wife's tale?
If so I'll have to put that with my duffer collection of things I've done, which includes old classics such as car stereos in the freezer and smoking banana skins (heh it was pre-internet OK)

      • You don't need it…until you do. There is a reason why telcos literally paid billions for a bit of the spectrum.

      • +1

Haha couldn't have said it better!!! Whenever you see a phone deal posted, the "Band 28" crew are out in force with the same dumb questions!!!

      • Band 28 question here lol.

So i'm curious to know more. I live in the lower Blue Mountains 50km west of Sydney. In my area we have no 4G at all, and only a little of 3G, however we are swamped with 4G+ (or is it x?).
We also don't have NBN here yet, so I'm stuck with adsl2+ maximum speeds of 5mbps, however if I tether or use the mobile broadband that has 4G+ capability I get 26-30mb/sec.
Our phones and modem have Band 28, so I always thought it was pretty important, especially for where we are located.
I do photography so I often use the mobile broadband to do the uploading of images as it's utterly painful over home wifi with the 0.8mbps upload speeds (compared with the 5mbps upload speeds with the 4G+ modems).

I'm curious now as to how important Band 28 is tho, I mean this mobile for instance is surely carrying other 4G+/x bands tho? It's just one band it's missing out on?

        FWIW we're with Optus.

        • Try this site https://oztowers.com.au/Bands I'm not affiliated with it however it seemed useful to explain. It would be extremely rare for Optus to use band 28

        • @Cheapsize: Thanks!

        • @Cheapsize:

It would be extremely rare for Optus to use band 28

According to the OzTowers site, Optus uses Band 28 in 5802 (83.41%) of all their sites. It's also the most widespread 4G band for Telstra. Definitely makes a difference, especially considering B28 travels further (= better indoor coverage). Where I'm located (quite central), it's either 3-4 bars of 4G (if using band 28) or 3G (occasionally 0-1 bars of 4G with Band 3) on Optus.

          H+ is HSPA+ (not 4G LTE - more like "3.5G").

        • +1

          @dunker56:

If you have an Android phone, you can use the Network Cell Info app to check which 4G band you're running on (gives you the 4G band in the top right).

        • @donnot: honestly I don't notice it most of the time I'm on 4G+ I'm in suburban Melbourne. I go to Yarra valley and don't get coverage indoors but that's a few times a year. So it depends 9.9 times out of 10 you have coverage and it's decent.

6.44"… hmm…. my mobile is now 6.8",… sorry no deal i need bigger! mi max 3 blue FTW

  • Too big.

    That's what she said.

Remember 2011 when everyone said the 5.5" Samsung Galaxy Note was just a wee daftie for being too big?

    • remember 2008 when everyone is using the smaller the better mobile phone. example, Nokia 7210

  • ffs sold out all ready

  • If you make the display less bright, does it use less power, increasing battery life?

The Mi Max 2 display can go down to 1 nit (according to https://androidcentral.com/xiaomi-mi-max-2).
It makes sense that it would use less power, but I understand some displays have a constant backlight, and the display just blocks it; so a darker display makes no difference. It depends on the display techology.

  • Missed out :(

  • Encore please?!

  • Thanks to the community we have ozbargained this! Good stuff!

  • +1

    Perfect phone…

    Except no nfc
    No b28
    Horrible camera

    • The camera isn't horrible. It's low spec but using open camera app its actually fairly decent.

      • Miui 10 camera improves it alot and adds the ai mode. Also rooting and install google camera is an improvement

      • +1

It's horrible. Much better than the original, but honestly the only reason I've considered changing this phone is because the camera is trash without full lighting.

And with full lighting it's often trash. Focus is seemingly random, direct sun washes everything out.

        Otherwise I love my phone.
No need for b28, and nfc… I would use it for Android pay.. if it were more confident than my card, which it's not

        • Use open camera. It's much better than the trash stock camera app. I take decent photos with that.

        • @Cheapsize:
Cheers, I'll give it a go

    • I have never used NFC, rarely take photos and have good coverage without needing band 28. But I'm not in the market for a phone at the mo'.

  • Bugger really wanted this :/

  • Damn, been eyeing this exact phone as a birthday present for a couple of weeks and it gets sold out within half an hour of posting.. must've only had a handful of units. :(

    • $217 for gold version and DHL shipping on AliExpress

  • +1

Read about the Mi Max 3 and decided to wait a bit for it to drop. Yes the Mi Max 2 is underwhelming compared to the Mi Max (Its better suited for folks wanting to get a large phablet instead of Mi Max owners choosing to upgrade). For now I will rely on my work phone which is the iphone 8 and transfer the sim inside the dead Mi Max to my wife's old One Plus 2.

P.S: Impressive that the Mi Max 2 sold out. Most folks who saw my Mi Max never heard of it nor the parent brand and thought it was some form of iphone lol.

Catch is so unscrupulous. Does anyone remember the "free" ethernet cables. Almost everyone then recieved a "sorry sold out email" days after signing up for an account.

Ill bet they had about 20 of these phones and are just upping traffic.

    • +2

Must have been lucky, signed up for new Account and good the 10m "free" ethernet cable. From that time on have bought very little from Catch.

  • They had the Xiaomi mix2 for $295 aud, but gone up now

    • I'd have bought that in a heartbeat.

  • -2

Anyone did an impulse purchase and change their mind, pls pm me. Interested to buy. Thx

    • +2

      lol

      • +1

actually someone maybe change their mind, but resell at $100 profit
