Apple Gift Card Tracking - Scammed on Gumtree Sale via PayPal

Does anyone know if I contacted Apple - would they be able to check which Apple ID redeemed a Apple gift card and flag the account? I have the original receipt showing that I bought this iTunes card based on the card no.

Long story short, I sold an Apple gift card and sent the code via the buyers email after receiving payment.

After a week later the buyer puts in a dispute claim that they didn't authorise this payment and that PayPal will investigate further. Sold via Gumtree

They paid via PayPal friends and family.

Thanks in advance

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize that it was our job.

  • They paid via PayPal friends and family.

I was under the impression this didn't entitle them to buyer protections - are they claiming fraud? That requires a lot more proof (not saying you're safe: it's actually possible there's a string of victims here):

Perp (P) hacks A's Paypal account, hacks B's Apple account, buys X off of you.

A claims fraud (because it was), and P has the goods sent to their address via B's Apple account.

If done right, it's pretty ingenious (if obviously wrong) - as the ultimate victim, you only see A and B's details - two other victims.

  • i thought buyer can't open case for pp fnf , unless they're doing cc chargebacks where bank take $ back from pp & pp recoup it off your hands.

  • How much was the card worth to assess how much effort to go to over this?
It is usually a bad idea to sell gift cards on gumtree, especially using paypal.

I wish people would stop doing this for gumtree sales.

it's almost like ozbargainers are asking to be scammed ?! this literally happens all the time. why don't you just get a job rather than trying to resell iTunes gift cards.

  • They paid via PayPal friends and family.

That's strange, I didn't think you could dispute sending in the payment via this method. Has PayPal contacted you about this?

they are reporting it as an unauthorised transaction. I think you are thinking of a dispute.

Surely OP would have a proof that the buyer wanted to send money via PayPal. If he has this proof and money actually landed in OP's PP account, that's a big coincidence to have for an unauthorised transaction.

  • Yeah the buyer is saying someone hacked into his account and I received a email to say that PayPal has put a hold on the amount I sold the card for, whilst it is investigating this matter. More than likely I will lose this case I know.

It was only for a 50 dollar gift card I'm glad it wasn't for a larger amount.

Itll be great if I can get the sob whom may hacked the guy's account, with apple's fraud department.

The money isn't the major issue.

Of course thought i would be safe from a friend's and family payment.

    Guess also lesson learnt too

Nobody hacked your buyers account, you are being played like a fiddle.

And even if they did, why would they not on sell the card to somebody else?

  • I think even if I sold it on ebay compared to gumtree, it wouldnt matter. PayPal usually sides with the buyer from experience.

    • Honestly this is a case where all the factors are in your favour… except for the fact that you dealt with a scammer. Selling on Gumtree > selling on eBay (so long as you get cash). Receiving funds via Paypal F&F is better than a normal Paypal payment (obviously not as good as cash), and usually again screws over buyers more than sellers.

Obvious point to change is to ask for payment in cash, but other than that not much else you could've done. Even a bank transfer could be reversed if it was actually fraudulent like the buyer is claiming here.

Was the buyer your friend or family member?

Guess what I'm going to say next…

  • Paypal is a joke, I got scammed in gumtree too last year selling my jetstar voucher. Long story short, buyer filed a dispute saying I didn't send the item and after showing obvious proofs that the buyer is scamming using various names, email and address and screenshot that I have sent the item, crooks managed to take back the money. Don't expect that you'll win this case.. As for Itunes, not sure if they will give you that info due to privacy.
