Need 2 Front Tyres for My 2007 Civic

To become roadworthy, my mechanic has identified that i need to replace my 2 front tyres and he doesn't do tyres change.

So i'm now in the hunt of 2 tyres.

The deal i saw from Beaurepaires is all for 4 tyres so perhaps not the best value for my scenario.

My 2 questions are:
1) Which tyre brand should i go for the 2 front? Just commuting car so don't need anything fancy. Best value i guess. If best value is generic brand, that will do. Complete noob so any information will be much appreciated.

2) Which tyre shop should I go for? Any particular one i should avoid for being notorious in hijacking the price?

TIA!

  • Tyres are one of these 'black box' items that you never really know what exactly you're getting.

E.G. "Brand X is a wholesale generic version of Y, made in the same factory, so my mate's mate told me'. For all the actual proof I've seen (none, really) there could be one single factory in Asia making all the world's tyres.

I managed to grab my last set from Tempe Tyres with a 15% off eBay deal, free delivery, then got my mechanic to install & balance. That was the cheapest method for me at the time, and I'll probably do it again for my other car once I see another good deal; though you probably don't have the luxury to wait.

If you appreciate your mechanic then just leave it with him to source & replace - you might pay more for 'not shopping around' but if you save yourself a measurable portion of time (i.e. 6 hours of searching) then that extra $30 per tyre could be worth saving you the hassle.

  • Have you ever used your spare. If not pick the best of the worst front tyres use that as you permanent spare just buy 1 tyre and get a wheel alignment and make sure you rotate tyres every dunno KLM's in the future.

  • Pretty easy, go to Tyroola, put in the specs and choose the second cheapest tyres delivered to nearest tyre place. Or, go to nearest tyre place and get the second cheapest tyres. They'll be shit of course, I know from experience, mine went bald in about a year, but will do on a tight budget in a commuter/runaround car until sometime in the future you can get decent ones.

  • If you dont know much about tyres, I recommend you go to your local ktas or bridgestone and get the tires that are on sale at the time, go with something known like bridgestone, michelin, good year, pirelli and dont pay more than $120 per tyre which Should get you a nice mid range all round tyre capable of covering about 50000 kms. Dont go cheap on tyres, you’ll end up paying more in the long run.

  • go to yr mechanic and ask him/her what is the best price they can do on a pair of tyres for the front,is there anybody that really believes that there is a generic tyre factory only making generic tyres

    How about you tell us….
    1. Where you are
    2. What's your budget
    3. How many k's you do a year
    4. What's the size of your tyres
    5. Do you have a spare
    6. What's the age of your spare
    7. What's the age and condition of the other 2 tyres

Not sure you could have told us less if you had tried

    • I bet 2007 Civic.

Yeh - oops, saw that about 4 seconds after I posted and about 2 seconds after you replied !

        • While that is a bit of a chuckle, you have a point, as OP still didn’t post anything regarding any of the other questions you asked, some of which are the most important, such as “budget”, or where OP is located.

        • @pegaxs:
          1) Parramatta NSW
          2) $150 - $200 for 2 front tyres
          3) 5,000 - 6,000 km/year
          4) 205/55 R16
          5) Yes
          6) Never used (age: 2018 - 2007 = 9
However this is already swapped by our mechanic hence as opposed to 3, we just need to replace front 2.
          7) 1x Rear Tyre is the full size spare tyre and the other one approx. 1 year.

        • @tempura:

1: no problem, 2150 is the postcode. (You will need that for the fitment centre)
2: tyresales.com.au with a link to your size and budget…
3: See link above (low km/y, so pick anything you like really.)
4: See link above (already selected your nominated tyre size for you.)
5: That's handy to have a spare. Just check to see it is still inflated.
          6: Onto two then…
7: Make sure that your rear tyres are of the same size/type. Guessing they are. On a front wheel drive, rear tyres are not as important as the fronts.

Tyresales.com.au is having a 20% off sale at the moment and can organise to send your tyres to one of its dealer network for fitment (after you picked a tyre, click on the big green "Choose a Fitment Centre" icon). You just nominate a place you know and that is close and a date and time that suits you. Pick the tyres you like (I have the Hankook Eco K425 tyres on my current car and they seems to be ok.) and pay for them. Turn up to your appointment once it is confirmed and get your tyres changed.

I have used tyresales about 10 times over the years for myself, work and friends cars and they have always been very good to deal with and very prompt.

  • i had a 2008 civic last year and i stuck MICHELIN pilot sports 3 on mine. excellent grip on the roads and in rain. costed about $600 for all tyres with 1 x free wheel alignment. I went to bridgestone and got it price beat

    • You chucked PS3s on a 08 Civic? Tell me it was at least a Type R…

      • Nah, not an R Type, but at least they knocked 3 seconds off his trip to work… :D

      • Yes it was a standard civic vti, Why not! better grip in the rain and less road noise on highways, at only $100-200+ i would pay on el cheapo tyres

If you are short of money (or really want to save) , check the spare tyre and see how good the tread is . If spare is like new, then you only need to buy 1 new tyre .
Of course, further down the line, you may need to get a new spare. You could keep the one low tread as a spare, just if you ever get a flat, then drive to tyre shop and buy new tyre, ie. Dont drive round with the unroadworthy tyre on.

    • Yes have done this, that's why instead of 3, i need to replace 2. Thanks Pete.

  • Thanks everyone who chime in!

  • You can go round (or phone call) all the big tyre places. Tell them first up, "I cant afford new tyres" and wondering if you have any used tyres with good tread.
Of course, they would rather sell you new tyres, but the used tyres with good tread, they have to pay to get rid of them, so it's a win/win :).
They should sell a couple of used tyres with good tread for about $20-$30 each.
There are people who change all 4 (when 2 are still good) and people and companies who change routinely at intervals (even if tread is still good) .
Good to re-use such tyres, rather than them going into landfill also :)

    • Good to know, thx

  • Another option is to contact car wreckers in ur area. Give then size etc and take their “still has 80% tread left” with a pinch of salt. A lot cheaper and environmentally two less tyres in the world for 80% of the time!!
