Yeah paid similar for a friend last week and now this sale comes up lol
Lel, less than what I sold my (identical spec) Netgear R7000 for second hand.
Do not buy this!!!!!
Read the description!!
It says TM-AC68U not RT-AC68U.
These aren't new, these are factory refurbished from T mobile with spoofed product number.
These do not come with Aus warranty and have been blacklisted from Asus.
Package content
1 x TM-AC1900 Wireless-AC1900 Dual Band Gigabit Router
1 x RJ-45 cable
1 x Power adapter
3 x Wi-Fi antennas
1 x ManualsGood eye to spot this out.
Yeah what a dodgy dodgy eBay seller.. should be banned. The TM-AC1900 is a T Mobile router with significantly lower 5ghz reception due to US laws.
Also Asus WONT help you with warranty and it's banned from all firmware updates.
We have seen this scam several times, keep in mind these are factory refurbished, they look like new.
Wow didn't know that lol. Why do they have lower 5ghz reception?
Most likely copied other listing. but I have messaged them and would post the response.
Your other links are scams aswell..
Anything that says the keyword "T-Mobile" or "TM", "OEM" are on the same boat.- Refurbished and claimed to be new
- Firmware Banned
- Zero Warranty from ASUS
- Significantly worse 5GHz reception due to following US WiFi regulation
Thanks removed those. I am just on chat with ebay too and have reported all the listings.
You are right. They just replied stating it’s T mobile one
At this price, TM-AC1900 is more likely (then it is too expensive). Issues with TM-AC1900:
- Potentially difficult to upgrade the firmware. Ai-Mesh firmware may detect it being TM-AC1900 and lock it to prevent it from using Ai-Mesh.
- US power supply.
- Some, if not most, are used and then refurbished.
I bought one from Amazon US (much cheaper than this). One of the antenna sockets was slightly bent (I had to bend it back). The router's default password was changed (had to do a full reset). Then, it was a bit tedious to flash the firmware to put merlin firmware on.
Also, it is most likely revision A1 equivalent of RT-AC68U (which has a weaker CPU and subpar USB3 shielding).
Wow even with your warning I had a hard time finding TM, how did you spot it?
Search for Package content. First item listed in package content. Also, one of the recent negative feedback comments provided a warning to double/triple check.
This price range is normally flooded with overpriced TM-AC1900s.
Tech Profile is known to be in Malaysia, I wouldn't trust them with this being Australian retail stock and most likely a grey import.
Thanks ozbargainers I nearly ordered but read your comments you saved me.thanks
I ordered one of these a month or so back when it still said Original AC68U on the ebay ad, started a Paypal dispute when I realised it was a T Mobile branded one….seller even had the hide to say it was original until it arrived with the T Mobile logo slap bang on the box outside… had to return this tracked to Malaysia at my cost, nearly $60 out of pocket, even though it was shipped from Sydney….lesson learnt….
Wouldn't eBay/PayPal cover return shipping given you were scammed?
I have chatted with ebay and they said yes if title, pictures and description is contradicting
Some people just bought it for even higher price at $175 lol
If you want decent wifi don’t buy any of these junk piles. You can get a Ubiquiti AP Pro for almost the same and will literally drop number twos on this plastic crap all day. Probably plenty of decent brands but only one I know off that make actual decent APs, these ASUS and whatever aren’t even in the same galaxy. These are just dumb things dumb kids buy.
For people who can achieve a better placement of the wireless access point a separate wireless AP is definitely helps in getting a more central location.
Ubiquiti has a strong reputation but definitely worthwhile to consider some other alternatives. Smallnet Builder has a strong review on TPLink EAP225 V3, which is also very reasonably priced in the AU market.
i have been using merlin firmware on these router, https://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/. i believe you can adjust the wifi strength level
You can but only as a % of what allowed according to the regional settings. US routers are hardcoded at firmware level to follow US regulations.
He indicated merlin firmware (i.e. custom firmware).
The region based restrictions are set at a deeper level compared to firmware. You can install Merlin but it won't be able to expose missing channels or push Tx power over what the max is for the US.
@lolcoaster: you can change the region value to au which is the strongest strength.
you can actually go with koolshare firmware which is based on merlin. overclock and Tx value via telnet.
A while back I stressed out over this limitation also when comparing router/APs from US sources. However in real-world use it didn't appear to matter much. Most of the bands are still there, which are more than enough to cover day-to-day usage, without even getting into conflict with devices from neighbours. Having said that, if the application is in a dense apartment block then definitely this could have an impact.
Paid 167 last week and thought I got a good deal…
Good find, wonder if the PCE-A68U would be at a good price. Pairs well with this router
