Yesterday's outage was due to hard drive failure — VPS provider reported 5 out of 8 hard drives disconnected around midnight. The data was restored at around 4:30AM
They (VPS provider) need a link to better "server" rated hdds then :)
5 out of 8 is a huge 62.5 % failure rateMost disks that have identical constant use actually die at around the same time, what they need to do is have different brands and different lifecycles to prevent alot of disks dieing around the same time. Better server rated disks doesnt even come into it.
The thing is — nothing really guarantees 100% availability. Those are actually industrial SSDs not hard disks, and the failure came from RAID controller rather than the drives themselves.
We do have a replication setup for the database so no data is lost. For us it was just a matter of deploying a new VM, copy the data and re-establish the replication.

Happened around the same time as TA's eBay sitewide deal. Coincidence?
@Clear: Not likely. High-voted deals merely cause a blip on the bandwidth graph, usually not even visible. The eBay site-wide deal also collectively (including all related deals) only get around 25k click-through's. Note that DDoS is caused by the inbound packets rather than outbound.
@scotty: That's true. I guess the only real time you've had massive spikes is those click frenzy deals long ago where the Adidas and others broke site visit records?
