Do not buy kobo from Borders online store. What they do not tell you is that they do not have any in stock. Ordered one 4 weeks ago and it's still being backordered. Their customer care centre is not responding to email queries about it. Yesterday's news explains why.

  • I'd still be a bit turned off purchasing from them. No matter how much they say they will continue to operate, you never know what suppliers will decide to bail now that they have filed for bankruptcy.

As mentioned above - maybe you will never receive it?

  • Bewared you may not get your item!

Might want to be quick - I heard that Borders in the USA have filed for Bankruptcy!

    • That may be true BUT it will take time for administrators to work out a plan. For now it's business as usual.

If you pay with a credit card, you can probably get your money back via chargeback if it doesn't ship.

      Otherwise, get a Kindle.

      • Again, this is assuming they have stock.

No supplier is going to send them anything unless they can guarantee payment. As it is they'll be on eggshells wondering if any outstanding invoices will be paid…

    • so has Borders Australia… (and Angus & Robertson)

  • Yes, don't risk your money into a black hole of bankruptcy

      • It's funny you said +1 instead of actually rating their comment +1 D=

  • The kobo is down the bottom of most comparisons of ereaders. Sure it is cheap and if you just want a bare bones reader it could suit you but I would personally go something a little more substantial to avoid the frustration.

    • i looked a one a few months back in a store… the build quality looked really poor (cheap) and i wasn't too impressed with the screen quality compared to the Kindle…

  • How about the wifi Kindle from amazon.co.uk for GBP111.00 with free shipping to Aus ??
    Or GBP152.00 for wifi+3G..

    • think the free shipping is only for books, dvds, cds. Otherwise, id love a kindle myself too!!!

    • kindle is cheaper from the amazon.com site

  • Get a Kindle.

The Kobo isn't a bargain. It wouldn't be a bargain if it were free.

Also Borders is about to declare bankruptcy (or have already). so you'd be left holding a lump of DRM-riddled plastic.

“Your ebook library is perfectly safe. The Borders ebook experience is powered by Kobo, an entirely separate company from Borders. Kobo is financially secure and will continue to maintain your ebook library no matter what happens.”

I think it's a decent device, a colleague has one and I ordered from Borders last week, and it was dispatched the next day so I don't understand why some people have them on backorder unless it's a different colour or something.

Also, please be careful with the comparison sites that you are looking at the newest version of KOBO - the first received mixed reviews but the second on the whole got solid write ups, and the diplay is the same eInk one you see in the Kindle and Sony PRS 650 model.

The lack of buttons is potentially an issue, it's a little clunky to navigate, and the Sony software for PC is marginally better.

My plan is to use this reader for 18 months or so and then upgrade once prices are cheaper and/or technology has improved - at the end of the day with the amount I spend on books, it's going to save me a bundle.

    • Thanks for letting us know. The bankruptcy is putting me off. It's good to know Kobos are arriving.
