"Transformer" Electricity Switching Service [Run by Choice] Potentially $99 a year

162

Some Ozbargainers know how difficult it can be too decipher energy comparison websites to work out whether or not it makes sense to switch from one provider to another…….so step in Transformer which is a service run by the trustworthy people over at CHOICE.

First up Transformer will cost you $99 for a year BUT only if the Transformer team can save you more than the $99 fee by switching you in the first place. No save, no payment, no switch. Win Win.

How it works…..(and just so everyone is aware I haven't used the service, I'm not affiliated with the service but I have seen it on a local community site where I know of people who have used it and rave about it).

Jump on the Transformer website.

Upload a bill

They analyse current offers and if they can save you more than the $99 yearly fee they will contact you to potentially switch. THEY DO ALL THE HARD WORK FOR YOU WITH THE SWITCH ITSELF AS WELL.

Then they monitor the prices and will switch you again every 3 months if there is a better deal. This is included in the $99 annual fee. You need to approve it but they do all the hard work.

The good thing is that they also take into account if you have solar and perform the calculations on that as well which can often be a cause for greater confusion.

Hopefully this benefits someone and the fact that there is a service like this causes the utility retailers to up their game somewhat.

Cheers

It's only a rip off if they get you HLAS.

        Of the evil Megatron

      • +1

What's HLAS? Googled it and nothing comes up?

    • The government's website is free.
You'd want this site to be $100 cheaper than both:
      - the government's recommendation
      - your current provider

Otherwise it's better to just try the government website and not lose $100 of potential savings.

and possibly register for a free $50 cheque
and possibly learn how to get your electricity smart meter's data without asking your retailer

  • +3

Yeah I can do this anytime I want to, and not pay a single cent to shop around.

$99 is a significant fee for the convenience.

    No thanks.

  • +1

In my experience as a shopper I never heard of a bargain where I've to pay money upfront then maybe I see the benefits.
OP this is not a bargain for sure.

    • +1

Maybe I haven't written it in the right way but from what I see you don't pay upfront, I believe you only pay IF they can save you more than the $99 fee.

Then they manage your account for 12 months and will switch you again if another retailer offers a better option.

From my understanding a bargain is when I buy something cheaper than anyone else now and I get my toy now!

        • Oh right, sorry I misunderstood.

I will remember that next time I buy my toy from Joybuy or Banggood or any other Chinese site when I get what I buy in around 5 weeks (at best)

@jollster101: When I get my bargain from any shop, I get it now means I pay now and get it, it's mine even if I don't have it now. I'll get it depending on delivery or distance but I'll get it 100% unless the item gets lost or damaged during delivery. I'll get my money back 100% for sure if I don't get it.
You know your post is not a bargain:

If this is not a deal and needs to be in the forums then can the mods please move.

And now I'm tired to waste my time with your funny answers so hidden and unsubscribed.

I actually find the government energy compare website to be pretty good. It shows exactly how much you can save per year with other providers, even if those figures are not exact, it's pretty close. No point in paying someone else $99 to do the work for you when you can do it yourself in 5min (and earn $50 in the process).

I agree and I do the same. As I said I haven't used the service.

I suspect that even many of the savvy Ozb's get a little lost though so thought I would post it. If it turns out to be useless then it will disappear into obscurity but if it helps at least one person then it's a good thing.

Any I gladly took Daniel's money for doing pretty much nothing.

We all know how difficult it can be too decipher energy comparison websites

Nope. VicGov recently sent me a $50 cheque to use their compare website in order to find out that I was already in the cheapest deal. No sure why I'd actually pay $99 for the same service. So I figure I'm up by $149

    • I got the same $50 cheque, I love the smell of free money as I knew I was already on a good deal.

There are a lot of very savvy people on OzB, that's why the majority are here.

There have been a lot of electricity deals posted in recent months and the comments on those indicate that not everyone understands the best way to analyse the offers.

This is purely to give people a simpler choice. It won't suit a lot but it may suit some, isn't that what the spirit of OzB is about?

Not every deal suits every person but every deal may suit some people and still make it a bargain for them.

OP sounds like a REP. :)

    • I will stop posting now and you can flame away but before I do……I get peed off by utilities, banks and anyone else taking the pee out of everyday people who work hard to do what they do.

Nobody has any interest in the everyday man or woman which is why if you never challenge you never get the better offer.

I thought this could be something that people may benefit from. If they choose to then all good, if they don't then all good.

Please don't stop posting (deals) because of a few terse comments. But if you mean stop posting comments in this thread, yeah let the dogs lie ;-)

  • If you have the roof space, you may wish to consider solar pv system. Otherwise switch to more energy efficient appliances.

related forum post with the government comparison website link, for those who may be interested.

Thanks for the hard work but I think this deal is more for "plebs". It's not that hard to compare energy plan on Ozbargain thanks to the community (numerous excel files with rebates and charges). I had to switch 3 months ago and found the company for my needs in less than 10 minutes, Ozbargain can save you more than $99 and for free!

  • Lose lose either way. $99 gone.
    1. Easier to make a quick buck by milking the cashback/credit option from various providers
    2. They dont factor in the "best discount" one can negotiate over the phone.
    3. They get sign up referrals from the retailers. No major diff to the comparison sites out there.

    • +1

And they should be offering it to their subscribers for free (or for only a few dollars)

  • So recently installed solar, looking around for best feed in tariff, found this website: https://wattever.com.au/ that seems to do as described, list all plans available. Put it in your calendar to review once a year and save. BTW I ended up choosing Origin Solar saver with 15c feed in.

  • Some power companies have a referral system too. Recently changed a relative to Powershop from Origin (in Vic) and later found Powershop have a $75 referral system.

My problem with these deals is that it’s saying, hey you, lazy/illiterate one, use my service and trust I will do the best for you.

But it’s clear, all their customers are lazy and illiterate, so they won’t even know if the service they paid for is doing their job.

  • +1

The government provides this as a free service. https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au

Don't pay for them to sign you up with their "preferred providers" and make a neat penny off you.

  • Can somebody please provide a link to the government energy comparison site where you get $50 for using it? Is this applicable to Victoria? Thank you.

    • see above comment. On that website, I think you answer a few questions (suburb, home/business, etc) and then they show you some offers as well as give you a link to the $50 offer. Only once per household though.

  • It's free to use Choice to check it out for you at no cost - so I figure why not? Just email them your bill. Here was my response from Choice - "After analysing your usage and current rates, we've found you’re already on the best deal for your needs" - it was worth it alone just for that small sense of satisfaction I felt when I read those words!
