Gas and Energy Bill Comparison

Our Gas and Electricity were with AGL in Sydney for years.
Recently moved. I am comparing suppliers in the market and looking forward to your advice and experience.

There was earlier post on % of discount. It is more meaningful if tariff rate and other charges are included in discussion.

I had chosen Click Energy as no contract. Only when I told the sales that they are more expensive than AGL, I was offered their best rate on Lavender plan. However, I am open to switch based on this discussion.

For the gas, I haven’t chosen. Click offers a $50 shopping voucher for the switch, but my initial check surprises me how much the rate and bill can vary. The principle is that some suppliers give more discount but the tariff is a lot higher (from 2.8 cents to 4.98 cents for the first 20.712 MJ/day step 1). Majority of my bill is from usage, The supply charge per day also varies (normally higher with lower tariff.

I used the government website to compare rate with my last bill detail. My take is that there are a lot new players in the market but they are all more expensive in my case.
Annual bill range from $970 - $1300.

The rank from lowest to highest in my case is AGL=Origin=Energy < Red < COVAU< Click<LUMO<Amaysim<<< Dodo

It takes a fair bit of work to establish which is the cheapest.

Use excel and compare supply and usage charges for each company based on the distributor for your address.

Ignore the standing offers - usually, the supply/usage charges are inflated to compensate any percentage off. If you decide to go with a certain provider then ask for their best rate.

    • I tried CHEAP BILLS https://www.cheapbills.com.au/ and these guys have been quite good. Recommend their service as they work on your behalf and capture your requirements before selling you any plan or provider.

If only you were in VIC! Victorian Energy Compare (Vic Gov) website does the hard work for you…

If I am correct, most of the major players have "no contracts". You were with AGL, which means you were not on a contract in the first place.
What you are signing up for is a "12 month benefit period", which isn't a contract.

  • Something Ive yet to get to the bottom of is that the Victorian Energy Compare website show a particular supply charge but going to the actual retailer shows another more expensive supply charge. Its a bit misleading and frustrating.

  • We moved to qenergy for our electricity and we have been happy, very competitive rates. Only issue is you need to call the hotline to pay using credit card, no waiting time usually but it is not my favorite thing in the world so I pay for 2-3months worth in one call and just leave it as credit.
