  • it look very bulky, it is very heavy?

      43 gees

    • this thing is plain garbage. Not only is it from a model from half a decade ago, the fit and sound are both terrible. I got one when it was first released, one of the worst purchases I've made.

  • +1

No Bluetooth for music? Very strange considering most stream music now.

    • +4

Ive got this one, it can connect via Bluetooth to listen to music.
Streaming mode: music / phone call via Bluetooth (won't recommend for phone call)
Device mode: music stored internally (16gb)

      • How's the actual sound quality for music?

        • +2

It's average - not terrible but some more modern bluetooth buds will probably give you a better result.

        • +1

I only tested it with the SBC codec and found the clarity to be good with a pleasing overall signature but could hear the compression (but I'm an audiophile).

It does have native support for AAC though, but not AptX, which means that if you use an Apple device for streaming or load its internal storage with tracks encoded in AAC, I suspect it should actually sound pretty good.

If you use an Android device or load it with MP3 tracks, it will default to SBC, resulting in the "average" quality, which I believe fookos has experienced.

        • @elektron:

I've used it both with music pre-loaded into internal memory, and also bluetooth stream to it from an iPhone. The sound isn't as not full as I'd like but for running it gets the job done.

    • +1

There are 2 modes. Music from the built-in player / Music from Bluetooth streaming

I bought it 18 months ago.. cost more than $100..and i only use it once.
    it is not comfortable..
Only good thing compare with Airpod is this earphone Can store songs.
you dont need take phone with you when you excising.. like running.

but for $50, it is good price

    • I just started using it, it's very comfy for me! might be the fitting of the earbuds? Also lmao people turn their heads because I look like an Android wearing this so there's that

  • +3

Have had one in the past at this price point (would never had paid the $349 these originally sold for years ago)
The power button randomly gets stuck, and wont work some days.
The App on Android will randomly crash.
I am not even sure if the app is supported anymore, as there was an update a short time ago about it changing provider on June 30th
Kind of big, and looks a bit weird when running with them.

But considering all this, I just ordered another one.

I use these for running, and don't find them that uncomfortable.

    • Benefits of these, is I just preload a bunch of music, and its kind of synced to your heart beat, so some songs will only be played in the 130-140 heart beat range etc.
    • Gives Audio prompts after 1km of running stats (heart rate, pace etc)
    • Another GPS tracker / heart rate monitor that can give me some stats as well as the garmin (dont think I can link these stats to strava)

Best benefit is I can get all these stuff without having to run with a phone.
So for $50 its good, any more I wouldn't bother.

I got it for $50 too some time back. In fact, I've been using several iterations of this music player, my best advice is to keep the receipts in the box and store them somewhere safe. Chances are it may get faulty within the warranty period. Happened 2/5 times for me and had to take it for exchange.

  • +1

Been wanting one of these for a long time. $50 is a fair price, thanks OP!

  • on the sony website it only talks about running and swimming. Does the tracking work (and works well) for other sports like cycling?

    • Swimming? Really? Same model? That would be awesome for this price.

      • Says it is usable underwater on both the Sony site and JB Hi Fi site.

        • Yes! Ipx 5/ ipx 8. Awesome. Sold!

          @Mahalo:

yup! But given running and swimming are "slower" moving sports, I wonder how it'll go for cycling.

          {update]: apparently it works. https://www.t3.com/reviews/sony-smart-b-trainer-review

        • @pippohippo:

But how? When sound waves move in water its almost impossible? Unless you've got a tight seal.

          I'm so confused

        • @pippohippo: i’ll Let you know. Been looking for ages for a decent one for swimming. I cycle to the pool. $53 delivered is a good deal.

        • +1

          @Mahalo:

i just googled it and it looks like it works. Look forward to your update :)

        • @The Informer:

Sorry, not too sure. But doesn't the garmin and fitbit also detect it and they're not a tight fit?

        • @Mahalo: it is bit bigger to go with cycling helmet. I was not comfortable withbit. It used to come out often.

        • @ashishmittal80:

how was the GPS tracking on it?

        • @pippohippo: i think my helmet is ok as it’s one of those skateboard types.

        • @pippohippo: arrived Monday. These work fine with the helmet and cycling. Still have to test and try all the features. Really all I wanted it was for swimming. Seems that this is definetly more for running. Audio clarity is good. Confortable enough for the 1 hour I wore them. For was good too. Didn’t have to change anything out of the box.
Only thing I want too happy was that the box they came in was broken. Looks like someone at the store may have opened it to have a look.

        • @Mahalo: did it support cycling now. When I owned it, it only has running and swimming. When I wore it to ride, I broke all sorts of strava running records…

I've used these (or possibly an older revision that looks the same) for swimming and it works well enough. I found getting the seal to be watertight to be difficult, which meant that I'd end up having to put the volume on maximum to get it to a good level once there was water in my ears. As a result of that less than perfect fit is that turns or other quick head movements made them liable to fall out. A cap completely covering it on your ears may work well to solve that, it's not something I've tried though.

  • How does it measure heart rate? Through your ears?

    • Yes. You have a pulse in your ears.

      • Wow, TIL

      • Sure but is the hrm accurate? Does it use light or electrical conductors?

  • What's the battery life like on these?

  • SO we can use this whilst swimming?

    • Yes apparently. I bought mainly because of that.

      • +1

I also want this for swimming and found this review but worried if they will stay in place (given the size)

        https://musicphotolife.com/2015/06/sony-smart-b-trainer-revi…

        Extract stated:
        Swimming with Smart B-Trainer
I was rather pleased to learn that the Smart B-Trainer can also be used for swimming. It comes with special swimming earbuds to prevent water from entering the speaker drivers. With that, there is no need to purchase a separate waterproof MP3 headset. There is currently no official app to capture swimming data, so you can only use the headset for music purpose without workout data.

        • +1

I am planning to use one of those swimmer caps just to keep them in place and bought the white colour in case it falls and I can find them easier.

I’m just a bit concerned if the salt water would damage this faster. I hope a rinse afterwards could just be enough to keep them going for longer.

Finally. A pair of in-ears I can use in the shower.

The app for Android is at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.sony.sma…. Last updated 28 June 2018 so I guess it should be ok.

  • It was not comfortable. It doesn't track cycling but hey, I just bought it again.. Don't know why…

  • +1

    Cheers OP, grabbed one!

  • Factory Scoop?

    • warehouse clearance

  • Recently bought one and battery life barely lasts 2 hours. Anyone also find the volume very low or do I have a faulty pair?

  • black one is out of stock now

  • I have the Walkman previous model mp3 headphones for the gym means I don't have to carry a phone and survived being wet swear etc, only issue is the charging of the device if this is anything like the Walkman style , mine is 4gb btw this being Bluetooth also means I have a spare when my meizu headphones die

If Jb sells something really cheap you have reasons to be suspicious in this case, they are wanting you to pay and put to large sea shells on each of your ears.

i was sent a refurbished unit

will be contacting them about it

I took my pair out for a run last night and have to say I'm very happy with them. They seem to fit my ears well enough after finding the right size rubber tips - no jiggling or complaints that it stopped detecting my heart rate - and they were comfortable enough for the 30 mins I was out. The sound quality was good, not brilliant but not terrible.

I went through the process of importing my music using the recommended application (on Windows) and really liked that I could easily change the tempo of songs being played while running. I also updated to the latest firmware version, as recommended by the Android app. Speaking of the app, I really like it too. It's great that Sony have kept updating it and releasing new FW despite the device being a few years old.

The most important thing for me was the workout log and I was not disappointed. The GPS accurately captured my route and distance (ran a route I usually run and compared with Strava results), my heart rate, cadence, speed etc. and best of all automatically uploaded my workout to Strava when I got home and synced with the app.

Very happy with my impulse buy so far - hope it lasts!

    • Wow. Thanks for sharing your feedback mate.
      Happy for you :)
