Double Status Credits with Qantas on Offer between 9th and 14th of August 2018

1060

To earn double Qantas status credits, you’ll need to register on the Qantas website (https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/memberSpecials/double-stat…) between Thursday 9 August and Tuesday 14 August 2018. Only flights booked during this period will earn double status credits.

The terms & conditions for the August double Qantas status credit offer are a little tighter than we’ve seen previously. Only Qantas marketed and operated flights (i.e. flights on a Qantas aircraft with a “QF” flight number) are eligible. Commonwealth government airfares won’t earn double status credits, nor will bookings made using gift vouchers redeemed outside the promotional period.

  • Wish it included QF marketed but operated by partners too.

    • +1

yeah, need to be careful when booking!

  • Will this work if the ticket is bought via a travel agent?

    • +1

      yes

    • Yes, also includes online booking website (assuming they put the booking through to Qantas within the promotion period - reputable sites do - check that you have a reference number that you can use on the Qantas website).

  • Do you know the travel period? i.e. if I book for a flight for November this year, will it qualify?

    • +2

Read the link outlined above. Yes it will.

"Starting from Thursday 9 August, you’ll earn double Qantas status credits on any new Qantas flights booked for travel between 21 August 2018 and 8 August 2019. Status credits count towards earning Qantas status, so double status credits means you can upgrade to a higher tier for half the amount of flying!"

Just bought flights 2 nights ago :(

    • +1

      Same here…

    • Bummer… also did mine yesterday and needed the extra credits ?!?!! Any work around?

      • Cancel and re-book if it was flexible or not yet ticketed?

        • $99 cancellation fee though

  • +3

Guess it is time to plan an SC run again.

Was useful last year when my wife needed a few extra SC to maintain Gold.

    • Wonder if it's possible to hit Platinum in one go. Also does elite status only last for one year with Qantas?

      • +1

The Tiered status last from the time you got it up until your next anniversary date PLUS 12 months. IE. if you got Gold today (8 August 2018) but your anniversary date is 8 December 2018, you will have 16 (4 + 12) months of Gold.

I'll also add that once you hit a tiered status, you will slowly drop one tier for each year you do not get enough SC to qualify. There are some min flight criteria to meet as well though.

As for hitting Platinum in one go. Yes that is possible if you want to have a long flight. EG. first (or possibly business) class MEL-SIN-HKG-LON-<many places in America)-SFO-SYD-MEL for example.

Basically you want to try bang for buck here so consider what sort of work flights you can schedule in right now. Make them all Flexible to allow you to max the SC as well as to accommodate some change, see what sort of overseas weddings you can fit in, work in that large Europe holiday that you always wanted etc.

        • So what if you’re sitting on Bronze atm and you want to try for a status run. Is it best to get it for the start of next year so that you get all of next year and the year after to enjoy it?

        • +1

Yes, but who knows when the next DSC promotion is (although it is pretty predictable, this one came from left field)

        • @nightelves: Well you know what your anniversary date is and as you can book up to 360 days in advance you can (I guess) do a SC run of some sort in the week after your next anniversary to maximise the benefits.

        • -2

@nightelves: Well return to Christchurch in Emirates SALE on A380, in Busienss class is $1390, and would equate to 320SCs. Which is enough to upgrade to Silver. I find Business Class trips to Christchurch to be especially useful, as these are $4.35 per SC, which is amazing by Qantas' standards. Plus it is only 2 flights, and in Business Class on the Emirates Airbus A380 with the lie flat seats ;)

        • @Hungrybonegaming: has to be Qantas metal and code so just double check what airline you are on with those Emerites flights as I suspect will be invalid.

        • @danielh: yeah but you have to take the flights before you get the points, so need to bear that in mind.

        • Are you sure you only drop one tier per year?

        • @clx: 100% sure. You still need to do some minimum flights though. I think 4 sectors per anniversary year. I have never NOT done that minimum 4 sectors though but I have experienced the golden parachute from Platinum many times to Gold and then the massive flutter to regain that Platinum the next year.

I don't really understand the point of a status run. Seems to me if you fly frequently enough to need the status, you'll be making it anyway. If you don't fly frequently enough to make status… then the perk (which basically amounts to lounge access) isn't worth the bother. Linked article details spending a considerable amount of time/effort and $500 excess to achieve status, using flights which otherwise could have been avoided. I'll pass on that. You'd have to be a real sucker to buy excess flights for a loyalty program.

      • +7

There's always a middle ground. You might not have flown all that much in the current year (eg newborn, job change) and you might know you have a lot of flights coming up. Also, you might use the tiered drop strategically - hit plat, fall back to gold and pick it up from there.

Saying it has no place isn't really going to be true, everyone's circumstance is different. Having said that, I've never done one myself and don't expect to.

      • While it can make sense in rare circumstances most people doing it are just being irrational and chasing status for some false sense of achievement.
There will be many flights booked to Noumea in the next few days, some returning immediately.

      • You tend to want to do the SC run when you are at Gold and are ALMOST at Platinum but not quite there, despite planned business trips etc. As a comparison, for me to get Platinum, I would have to fly about 35 MEL-SYD return flights (40 SC per return flight) to achieve Platinum (assuming 1400 SC requirement).

That is a lot of weekly flights which I have done for too many years in the past.

When you are at the equivalent of 26 of those flights (6 months of weekly travel) and then you realise that your anniversary date is only a few months away, you can start to feel the panic of not achieving Platinum due to the vagaries of work schedules not aligning with your anniversary date and so a SC run becomes a very tempting thing.

Once you attain Platinum, you are in yet another tier of service as you suddenly have access to the business lounge, international flights are suddenly a lot more fun (due to first lounges) and you get to keep that Platinum for 12+ months and if you don't make the requalifying SC credits for Platinum the next year, you only drop to Gold which still has a lot of nice perks.

price will go up during the promotion

    • Not if you book it way in advance as travel is till August 2019.

    • +2

Are you saying that the price of every Qantas flight for the next 12 months will be going up? I don't think so. It may be more correct to say that there may not be many new specials for discounted flights in the next week.

    • I made a note of pricing yesterday and a lot of the flights I am interested in actually dropped today. So price manipulation is not an issue.

  • +2

Omg,the timing couldn't have been better.

Need 80 status credits to keep my current status by the end of the month.

About to book a work trip that would have left me short, now I'll get there!

    Go me.

Edit: just read fine print, only for flights booked after 21st - nooo!. The highs and lows of ozbargain all in 2min.

    • Damn, same boat, have a work flight for the 18th to NZ that isn't booked yet :(

Wonder if I can book it for the 22nd and change it to the 18th afterwards…

    • Just do what I have done in the past (and I hope you had a fully flexible flight) and just cancel the booking and rebook the same flights (or perhaps shift it a little to make it seem you did it for a legitimate reason).

  • So at work they book our flights months in advance and I fly twice a week.. If I make an adjustment of my flights, as in, shift form a 4pm flight to a 4:30pm flight the travel agent will rebook all my upcoming flights and providing im registered and they make the change in that promotional period I will clean up… I think.. Am I wrong?

    • That’s not a new booking.

    • Need to do a full cancellation and rebook it properly. If Fully Flex then not an issue, if partial flex then I think your work coughs up a small fee.

      I say DO IT!!!!! :-)

      • Wouldn't a $99 cancellation fee be taken off the credit?

        • I guess it depend on your provider. My old firm had a flat $33 fee via a travel booking agency.

        • @danielh: Sorry was referring to Qantas' $99 cancellation fee on Flexi Fares.

      • +1

All our tickets are fully flex, and when they change our flights I get a cancellation email so I think it will work. I'll have a crack.

This is a deal breaker " If you change or cancel your initial qualifying booking and/or travel is completed outside the promotional period, this bonus offer will not apply."
I was hoping to prebook a lot of work travel and change as and when needed :(

  • Was looking at a couple of flights per to sin yesterday for December and after this promo started the fares were bumped up from 777 to 942. Not sure if it's due to the promo or because they're running low on seats but the timing is uncanny.

    • +2

Could be because people stated to buy up the cheaper seats.

    • Are you really surprised :)

  • +1

I know this is the whole point, but it's a pity the window to make the booking wasn't a bit longer. It's too early to ask my boss if I'll be travelling much in the near future :(

  • I booked some Japan Airlines flights today and linked my QFF number to the booking. Will I receive double?

    • +1

      No
