Quite sad that most XiaoMi phones is not compatible with B28
Otherwise there's a great potential in the Australia market

      • +41

I've been using phones without band 28 for years with no issue and honestly the importance that people place on it seems way overrated. If people got over the band 28 hype, many more phones would become great options for the Australian market and many cheap phones with nfc would become viable options.

        • +9

          @dealhunt:

so I hardly believe you had any chance to have band 28 during these years

I said that I have used phones without band 28 for years, implying that I have not used band 28????? regardless of whether I was able to use it or not

Also, there are many phones which people dismiss due to the lack of band 28, which use NFC. Although the majority of these use last generation processors or lack in other areas.

        • +7

@Diji1: I had a Xiaomi for a year without band 28. No issues whatsoever. For 4G+ most of the time, great bandwidth. Never ventured outside metro though.

        • +3

          @dealhunt:

You seem to misread and misunderstand people all the time, its like you're trying to be controversial on purpose

        • -7

@Make it so: >No issues whatsoever.

          Another total lack of issues.

For 4G+ most of the time, great bandwidth

        • +5

          @Diji1:
What the hell do you want from these people?
They've both stated, and I also have the same experience, that they've not had any issues with a phone that either lacked band 28, or didn't use it in Australia .
We get 4g/4g+ without it, and still have great coverage - hence no issues.

        • +4

@Make it so: Agreed - always strong 4G+ in Metro; until I went into Central Queensland for a week. Absolutely dreadful coverage on Voda and Telstra. I had to buy a burner phone from Coles for the week.

        • +6

          @NFC:

I’ve used phones without band 28 and with, and it can be the difference between no coverage and coverage in certain areas. I believe if you stick to capital cities then the lack of band 28 isn’t an issue. I also believe Vodafone is a viable option for city folk.

        • +13

I've got an import without B28.

My wife has a local phone with B28.

The difference is, in some shopping centers like Coles or indoor buildings, she gets 4G while I get no reception.

Also at my parents, double story brick house, inside the house, she gets 4G while I'm barely on 3G.

And we're both on the same network (Optus).

1-2 years ago, I had the same thought. That B28 didn't matter but now, if I do get another phone, it would have to be B28 supported.

        • +4

          @plasmoske:

Precisely my experience, but rectified now with a phone that has b28.
I personally wouldn't buy another phone without b28, but my previous phone was still fine nearly all the time. It's not about the hype for me, just personal preference based on real world experience

        • Same here. I have been using Xiaomi Mi5s since it is launched. Never had any issue.
I also bought Mi 8 and sad to see it is now so cheap.

        • @plasmoske: Thanks for your reasoned and evidence based report. I'm sure that will help people to decide what they want in a phone. From some of the comments on here you'd think only Telstra used B28.

        • @Ronnnie: means if u can use vodafone then band28 is not a issue?

        • @super8:

Just wondering which model phone you bought, supposing it was a Telstra 4G phone with B28 ( the new cheap Alcatel c1 is only 3G I noticed lol ).

Did your new cheap burner phone work better in that Rural area then?

I have experience with 3G/4G in rural areas, but thought feedback could help people residing in cities in case they want to travel out.

      • -1

Band 28 is not a Telstra scam.
Optus and Vodafone both use B28 in their network.

    • +7

B28 is the only 4g option I have. With out it, I'm on 3g.

I know XiaoMi do not have B28, but I still open every deal. Just in case. You never know. They may have added it in the two or three days since a bargain for that same phone was listed.

I could throw a rock from my front porch and hit that B28 tower. Sigh. How's the Serenity?

      • Keep checking, I've seen a couple phones from xiaomi made for other markets that do have band 28, though the typical resellers here get China stock

        • +1

xiaomi did a model for taiwan, taiwan has band 28, so do some european countries.

my son and i are both on optus, he has xiaomi a1 (no band 28) i nave LG (band 28) so in the country he has to tether off my phone for data, and in holiday house we use a usb modem as a hot spot so he can tether off that, modem has band 28.

in the city, it’s more a 3g vs 4g in some locations ….you have coverage, but speed might vary a bit, but most people don’t nice unless it’s congested.

      • Mix 2S has B28

      • The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 and Mi Mix 2s are 2 phones I recommend with B28

      • +1

Taiwai released a Redmi note 5 with B28 recently.

        • Finding one to buy is like finding a unicorn though

    • but if you are with voda, band 28 or not doesnt matter, correct?

      • +2

        Yes

      • coda use 850 for their low frequency instead of 700, but i believe tpg have band 28 for their new network roll out.

      • Yup. I carry around 2 phones, both on vodafone, one doesn't have b28 and i see no difference between the two. I'm mostly around the city area though. SOmetimes one does have better reception than the other, but neither of them are consistently better than the other

    Xiaomi Mi 8: 6GB RAM, 845 SoC - $537
    Google Pixel 3 XL: 4GB RAM, 845 SoC - $1600
    FU Google.

  • -2

You pre-empted the "no NFC" comments by naming yourself NFC.

    No B28.

    • +3

      Username DOESN'T check out…

  • If you select AUD as payment method you'll only be charged $500 AUD it seems

    • +1

      Wong.

      TAX & FEE
According to the tax policy of Australia, a goods and services tax (GST) will be charged on this order at checkout.

    • The title was revised incorrectly. Its $537 AUD including GST

      • I had $500.05 on checkout and when I tried to pay the payment failed and now it's coming up as $550 . Now it's looking better to pay in USD

  • Are these phones new user friendly? Possible new phone option for the missus who has only used iPhones.

    • +3

MIUI is aimed at cloning iOS, so i'd say she'd feel right at home.

      • Cool. I'll continue researching them a bit. No card slot kind of blows.

        • There's a heap of insanely cheap extras OEM's are leaving out these days. Blows hard.

        • This is a great phone and this is quite a great deal.

      • Miui is more like ios than android, if you know what I mean.

It won't 'just work' and be as dummy proof but my wife adapted Quickly to miui

    • +1

I'm a stock Android guy in an out, but I recently got a Xiaomi and man Miui is awesome, I have to say. It feels like betraying my beliefs, but Xiaomi really take care of their own.

      • +2

Yup. I've said it a number of times on here; MIUI was my favourite rom back on the day, and is one of most polished Android UIs today. I still slap the Google Now launcher over it though. I like having an app drawer, and my Google news feed.

        • Why do ppl prefer it overstock android?
I have note 4x with miui and was going to get an A2 because of the bloatware I don't use.

        • @Low Punt: I find some, not all, but some of their bloatware useful. Their updater app is great for flashing official roms if say the OTA updates haven't reached me yet (I've only ever used it once though).

I use their remote control app a lot. So much so that I've installed it on an old Samsung phone and use that to control all my devices in my living room… air con included. This is probably my most used Xiaomi app.

I like how it's already got robust sound recorder, clock, camera and file managing apps so I don't need to go look for one. Themes are quite alright too… but I just use the Google Now launcher these days.

For everything I don't like, I just deny all permissions and auto start since you can't really disable them.

I'm using a Redmi Note 3, and looking to get the A2 too when it drops in price, but I would consider another MIUI phone if the price and specs were right. Say if the Redmi Note 5 had more LTE bands and USB type-C, I'd be all over that.

    • +6

I would very much advise against getting it from here if you don't know how to tinker with these phones. They don't have Google Play installed (you have to install it yourself) and have a lot of Chinese bloatware apps. Its fine if you know how to flash global ROM on it but its a long process - it takes 15 days to get permission to unlock bootloader to do that.

If you want a good quality phone that is user friendly and similar price range then look into Nokia 7 Plus. eBay has a few for under $500 and they support all Aussie bands, and has pure google android that is updated FAST - like pixels. I wouldn't give my non technically savvy partner a MIUI phone, especially with Chinese firmware, it even annoys the hell out of me.

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative look into Xiaomi Mi A2 but it has NO headphone jack and NFC but has Stock Google Android. Nokia 7 Plus is hard to beat on value right now.

      • But the Mi8 is a flagship phone, the hardware is way better than both alternative you pointed out. In fact DXOMark rated it as high as Pixel 2 in term of camera.

        • +3

Yeah sure spec for spec its better I do agree. But stock Android without all the MIUI bloatware is far easier for non technical people. Its a quick way to get them to hate ALL android cause half the apps on the phone were ones that are only used in China and keep sending silly notifications.

        • -1

Lol. The camera sucks balls. Nowhere near P2 standards.

          DXO is a scam.

        • +1

DXO is like B28 for just about everyone. People fetishise it for no good reason.

        • @KLoNe: Why I agree it's not P2 standards (because I use P2, I prefer the Pixel 2 camera) you can't deny it run circle around the two alternatives here in all aspect except NFC and Band 28.

        • +1

Sylon gave some pretty solid reasons. No everyone wants to go around flashing roms. They just want it to work out of the box and if you FU then thats 550 down the drain.

        • @Icecold5000: That's one way to look at it, but a much better alternative is the cheap $410 Google Pixel 1 on deal a couple days before. Both better hardware and pure Android.

      • You can get the rom from their website and flash it with their Updater app which th phone will have. No need for flash bootloaders.

Haven't checked the website for the roms for this particular model though.

      • +1

I'm pretty sure you can apply for bootloader unlock before you even have a phone. So apply while you're waiting for it to arrive.

      • the 7 plus is my next phone, has all our bands, nfc, android one, treble compliance, comes with oreo but you can load OTA android p beta on it already

for a sub $500 inc gst phone it’s hard to beat.

        • Google Pixel 128GB for $410 beat it easily. Better in everything except screen size.

      • Or the Nokia 8 from JB. Nokia is one of the very few Android implementations that will treat SD cards as adoptive memory. The only other one I can think of is Moto. And I love adoptive memory, one of the best os innovations of the last few years.

    • Sorta. I think there's a few things you need to do when you first start up a Xiaomi phone. Ram management is aggressive and there's ads on it. You can do stuff to prevent these issues.

      Here's optimising ram management: https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/wiki/roms/notifications

      Disable ads: https://c.mi.com/thread-754122-1-1.html
(alternatively, you can just remove all Xiaomi's extra apps: https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/wiki/roms/debloat).

      Have fun.

Edit: Oh, this is not Global rom. I'll suggest to wait for global rom version to be sold, but if you want it now: https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/wiki/roms/optimise

  • Shame no card slot and only 64gb

    • Sd card are much slower than ufs and greatly affect its performance. 64? There are 256 models, if you are expecting a 256 for this price, you must be day dreaming

      • +1

They are much slower, but also much cheaper..which I think is the main point anyway. Most people only store music and/or photos on their SD card so speed really is a non issue, assuming they get at least class 10.

        • Could you find me one flagship that offer to card? If not, don't blame xiaomi on this

      • -1

Do you know what's even slower than microsd? Having to go through and delete stuff because you've run out of space.

There's plenty of usage for slow storage in a phone and no reason to not include it (unless you're Apple and solely interested in overcharging for storage)

        • Sure thing, but can you list me even one 2018 flagship with tf slot especially at this price range

        • @lplsz:

          2018 Flagships with tf slot
          Galaxy S9, Xiaomi Pocophone F1, Note 9, G7 ThinQ, XZ2 Premium, Moto Z3, U12+, V30S, Aquos R2, Zenphone 5Z, Honor Note 10

Zenphone, Aquos R2 and Honor Note 10 fits a flagship in this price range, roughly. Not sure I'd call the Note 10 a flagship, but there's very few flagships under $400USD at all.

  • I got total 500aud for the 256gb black. In the cart it shows $189 discount.

    This is before tax

    • -2

That is a very cute lie! Keep them coming.

      • It was. Maybe error on the mobile site.
It happened when I choold 256gb black, then change the currency to aud then add to cart.

        Anyway, I'm not buying it.

  • Q: tell me. is it possible to avoid paying a fee in my country to indicate on the box the amount below 150 euros and write some other commodity?
    By 7***e 08/03/2018 06:04

A: Dear customer, hello! Unfortunately, in order to successfully pass the customs clearance, we had to write a fraudulent amount of payment and the name of the goods on the box. Hope for understanding.

    edit: w@t

    • Apparently some AliExpress sellers avoid EU tax by doing this through DHL.

    • Read that too, I think they meant to write:

we'd HAVE to write a fraudulent amount……….and therefore cannot do it.

Or who knows. Chinglish is weird.

  • Amazing price, recently got a Redmi Note 5, so I'm all set on the Android front, but great catch OP!

  • Google apps/services on these?

    • Yeah, you can usually get Google apps on Android phones…

      • Not out of the box for xiaomis if they're from China. If it's a global variant then it will have google services.

    • Since there's no global model yet, this is the Chinese one but you can still download google play services.

    • Careful with this. My mind max 2 which I got from China (with Chinese rom) WOULDN'T open Google apps, even though they installed.

Installing the global rom fixes this (play store included too), but I'm not surprised they have released a global rom for this phone yet.

I'd strongly advise waiting for the global rom to be released before buying this.

EDIT: Global rom is available for this phone, so buy buy buy

  • +3

Thanks for the post. This is actually a very good price. This phone is selling for 2699 Chinese yuan in Joybuy's website (CN version), that's around $535 AUD. So $537 delivered including GST is a bargain. My experience with Joybuy so far is pretty good, delivery is faster than Aliexpress, usually receive my orders within 2 weeks.

  • Screen and camera look very impressive
I might get get this to replace my Mi5s in six months when it's about $350

    • Camera sucks and screen is 1080p

      • Camera has improved alot since mix2, not the best , but definitely one of the best. 1080p isn't quite an issue, if it was 2k, people will blame it's better lifr

      • Great, 1080P rocks battery life, and I have no use for VR with it.

  • As mentioned above,256gb model in black come to $500 aus!! Not including GST.

    • shows up at $722 for me for 256 black

    • If you add the 256gb to your cart, you'll notice that it shows up as 6gb/64gb..

Think it's a bug or other weirdness in the shopping cart.

    • +1

punish your friends with 256gb of pictures and movies they aren’t interested in ….bad enough being punished with 32gb of other people’s lives ….

  • Two things about this phone:

    • No headphone jack
    • No Band 28 (but is still useable especially if you're with Vodafone or similar that doesn't rely on Band 28, but you will get connectivity issues around Caulfield and stuff)

But otherwise a great price for a great phone. If you're not happy with the MIUI then head over to XDA Devs and possibly learn how to flash something like Lineage OS which works really well on these phones (especially if the phones themselves have lots of support). As a guy who has a Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus, would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind those two above. Shame Xiaomi decided to remove the jack in their flagships but you don't necessarily need to pay this much to get a good phone (look at the Redmi Note 5 Pro or even the Mi A1, phones that are highly backed by a community that will last around 3-4 years).

    • If you can live with Vodafone than I’m sure you can live without band 28 on your phone. Vodafone coverage is non existent a lot of the places I travel. Vodafone network is only good for populated areas. The choice to go with a higher band over the other two doesn’t help with their coverage either. We all have to weigh up what works best for us. If you can get away with the Vodafone network then no doubt you can live without band 28.

  • +1

Don't pay with PayPal guys, PayPal took my $557 plus I'd be charged for international fee from commbank :( so much for saving money

  • Does it have NFC?
Will it work in Melbourne Metro areas?
    Does it have wireless charging?

    • Yes to NFC. No to wireless charging. I can't help with your other question. Sorry.
