[AMA] I am an Intern Engineer and Thesis Student - Ask Me (Almost) Anything

Hi everyone!

I'm an intern engineer at a satellite communications / network systems company and a final year thesis student finishing my Bachelors in Engineering (Electronics & Communications) at ANU.

Ask me (almost) anything!

Cheers

What is so speacial about 22 carats?

    • Nothing too special, it's just my number of preference (for obvious B'Day reasons) and "22 carat" happens to be a common type of gold. Gold is shiny.

Will you have a job after you leave?

    • Yeah the deal is, I work as an intern engineer part-time while finishing my degree (all that's left is thesis), and once complete, then I go full-time grad engineer in about Dec

How essential is mathematics in the degree you are undertaking?

In first year, you do maths all year, touching topics that are relatively difficult (linear algebra / advanced calculus).

Second year onwards, you realise that you need more logic than pure mathematics. You need a certain proficiency of math, but more importantly, you need logic as many things eventually delve into problem solving and programming.

By logic I mean thinking algorithmically - "if this, then that", etc.

Do you think the world would be better if it was run by engineers?

We need everyone - health professionals, public servants, finance, legal, etc.

But, pardon my bias, I do think we need more engineers, scientists and any other types of "innovators" and "creators" - not so we can have more fancy smartphones and smart assistants with rather pointless "convenience" features, but we need to focus on changing society for the better. Whatever that entails.

I'm sure if our tech leaders were not so profit-orientated and were instead focused on improving society, that these same people could change the world. Somewhat.

Yup. It might be a little more starkly utilitarian, but I honestly prefer a meritocratic system like Germany (or even China), where the upper levels of politics are dominated by people with PhDs and other post-doctorate STEM degrees, than… well what we have in the US and here.

  • Can you fix (speed up, make more stable) my satellite NBN?

Are you getting paid as intern? And what's the range of your salary when you start full time?

    • Yeah getting paid as an intern, but at a lower annual salary and I only work part-time, so it isn't a whole lot. Still better than unpaid. Full time role will be upper middle 60s.

In general, intern/grad periods in employment, in my opinion, isn't really about how much you make. It's more about the valuable skills you pick up, start learning things at a faster speed than uni, and hopefully you like what you do :)

  • A bat and a ball cost one dollar and ten cents in total. The bat costs a dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

    • +1

The ball is $0.05 and the bat is $1.05, making the total $1.10. Is that right or am I being conned by a classic mind twister?
