I just realised that since 2016, I get charged $49 for my Amex (Membership Rewards Fee) for linking my amex to qantas etc.
I was just wondering if there is a way to avoid this?

its a gold credit card
That's a really old one. I doubt it comes with Membership Rewards attached to it complimentary, which is why you're paying for the privilege of earning these points.
You'll be much better off switching to a different AmEx card (such as the Qantas Discovery [if your aim is to earn QFF], the Essentials [if your aim is to earn to a general program that transfers to other airlines] or the Velocity Escape [if your aim is to earn VFF]). All of those options have no annual fee.
If you don't mind paying an annual fee then you can get the Platinum Edge or Explorer card, both solid options that have excellent points earning potential.
If you want to go all-out hardcore and be an AmEx baller then get the $1450/yr Platinum Charge card.
Many suitable options for your needs.err….i dont really get it. yes it is a very old ones. I think I joined this amex back in 2008.
But isnt that Amex should rewards more of their loyal customer rather than the one that just join?
and if i want to sign up for qantas discovery amex card, is there any pre - requirement?
Ring Amex and complain there is no such airline as qUantas so they are taking your money under false pretenses.
lol…edited
What do the terms and conditions of your card say?
Change to one of the Qantas branded Amex cards?
The discovery card has no fee, 1 qff pt/$. I dont know how that compares to what you have now.I'm pretty sure that my Amex is $49 to earn Qantas points but free to be on Amex member rewards. I'm earning Amex MR
What Card do you have? Need more info in OP to be able to help you. Is it a Credit Card/Charge Card, etc?
