Selling Credit Card Points (Virgin), Is It Getting Harder?

I have no intention of selling points in the future

But I noticed one of the other threads was closed due to a virgin issuing a cease a desist notice.

Is this a once off,
Was this inevitable
How will this change things
Is this the start of major changes or have the major programs already been doing this?

I find it very interesting, let's discuss :)

  • Didn't know of the duplicate thread.
    Sorry folks

    • +1

      I forgive

  • Discussions go here. Not this thread. That post is only for mods to post in, for recording and archiving take-down requests, and is not a springboard for lengthy discussion topics. Thanks.

  • So did the cease and decist specifically refer to that thread or in general?

If so wouldn't that mean you'd have to lock every other virgin points for sale post?

    • C&D refers to that thread specifically as an example of fraudulent activities on OzBargain. We complied their request a bit differently as we felt that some part of the requests is unreasonable, however not able to discuss the specifics yet.

One thing for sure is — buying/selling VFF points is against their terms, and you might be targeted.

      • Nice work.

Are they allowed to say things like "cease and desist to any thread that sells virgin points"?

        • They can 'say' what they like. Whether or not OzBargain is required to comply with it, though, is a different story. My gut feel is that scotty, neil & gang are making the right decisions.

        • I am not sure that they would be able to muscle OzBargain to comply anyway. OzBargain as an entity does not have any commercial relationship or otherwise with Virgin. Yes the platform is facilitating breaking of their T&C but OzBargain never signed any.

This would be no different to targeting ads on GumTree, Google, eBay etc.

However OzBargain may choose to respect their T&C without having to take it further by taking down those posts. Selling points is not inherently illegal so it's not the same as eBay/GumTree taking down consoles with mod chips and copied software. It could also be a precursor to further legal action

  • Another point i'd like to make is that although the situation is made out such that it's not "hurting" anyone, it actually is making it more difficult to redeem points. Availability in general is lower if more points are being pumped through the system. On top of that it increases the scrutiny for that time you book flights for your close friend who isn't technically a family member. Allowing someone to run an entire business profiteering off these schemes is completely different to posting classifieds.

There are also allegations that the poster requested that the going rate be 1c even if he paid more, so that it manipulates the market lower for his business to profit more.
