If you can't get to a Repco the closest I have seen to this is:

    20 pack @ $10.98 (normal price everyday).

  • Does microfibre scratch a car's paint, glass, etc?

It scratches my hand, always thought it was terrible on a car's cosmetic items.

    • +3

no? That's very much the point of microfibre.

      • I thought the point of microfibre was to have smaller fibres which pick up/attack dirt on surfaces and leave no lint behind.

      • +25

Incorrect. Scratches are induced by friction. Even with the best quality microfibre you are still going to inflict some marring of the clearcoat. Scratch free is a marketing gimmick.

A good quality 70/30 microfibre when used with proper technique will limit the amount of marring

These cheap 90/10 Chinese towels are more suited for non painted surfaces. Use them on tyres, wheels, interiors and even door jams

Edit. Maybe reply instead of negging me. I own both a detailing store and have over 10years detailing care. Scratches are caused by friction. Anytime anything touches your paint it causes a level of fiction. We use protectant and quality towels to reduce surface tension and therefore reduce scratches

          :)

I think its because of 'cheap' and 'chinese' in 1 sentence and a comchi neg'd you

What quality towels do you recommend?

          @Colombian:

My preference is for Korean edgeless microfibre towels for paint. Korean microfibre is far superior but China is catching up

Here is a summary of what I look for in a towel

ORIGIN Korea makes better quality microfibre than China but the gap is closing. My high quality towels can be washed over and over again.

BORDER Edgeless for paint but poor laser cuts leaves a plastic feeling edge which induces scratches. Korean QC is far better here. Overlocked stitching should be avoided on paint but is suitable for interior and other jobs. Satin and microfibre borders are better option than overlocked but inferior to edgeless

WEAVE split microfibre for drying. Cheap towels like these are Terry weave and great for dirty scrubbing jobs

NAP long nap dry. Shorter nap for cleaning. Weave and nap should be considered together

BLEND Polyester/Polyester. Polyester is like plastic. It is what gives a towel it's stiffness and cleaning punch. Polyester is more like satin. It is what makes a towels softer and more absorbent. These towels are probably 90/10. Great for cleaning. Not soft enough for paint and won't absorb enough water

VALUE when I pay for both cheap and ecpensy towels I want to get value from them all. I'm happy for a cheap towels like this to be used a couple of times for dirty jobs before throwing away. While I want my expensive paint towels to last dozens of washes.

          @4agte:

I'm a little confused by the "polyester/polyester" comment - is there a mistake ie are the names supposed to be different, as I cannot tell the two apart?

        • @huit:

Sorry about that. It should be Polyester/Polyamide. Polyester is always the first number listed and the highest of the two

They're not -supposed- to but I've found the cheaper bulk packs of cloths aren't always so great for the car. They go incredibly dry and staticy after the first wash so they're prone to leaving lint and possibly scratching. Might be better off with a microfibre wash mitt to clean and a large, higher grade microfibre towel to dry with.

Otherwise I find they're great for general cleaning around the house and this is an excellent price considering how quickly you'll lose them anyway.

The surface will scratch if some dirt is trapped on the cloth, but this can happen with any material.
You will love how they clean windows, nothing beats them. One wet cloth to wash (water with one single drop of washing up liquid added), one dry cloth to polish.

The reason it feels scratchy on your hand is due to the microfibre cloth snagging on the uneven surfaces on your hand that you can't see. Think skin flakes.

If you put your hand under a microscope, it probably looks like sandpaper.

      • Wouldn't it to the same thing to aged glass and/or surfaces?

        • Only if there are small foreign objects trapped in the microfibre cloth.

But the point of microfibre cloths are they are able to pick up smaller grits from surfaces, just don't drag them across your paint without rinsing them out regularly.

      • It is more likely because the towel is a 90/10 blend and not a 80/20 or 70/30 blend. Cheap microfibres have a 90% Polyester content and therefore feel more like plastic. It is the polyester they are feeling. A towel with more polyamide will feel more silky

    • Guess I'm in the minority, I always just left the car to air dry

      • Depends how expensive your car is. If it's over $25k market value, I'd never let it air dry. Leaves marks.

I always used to hand wash my car then just drive down the highway for a while.

I've been using these rags for quite some time. Cleans really well and very good in quality.

Got them from Big W for $10, same price at Bunnings too. There's about 20 rags in the pack.

    • Which one is better?

      • +2

these ones aren't great. I prefer costco ones. Haven't tried bigw though

        • Thanks! I saw it the other day. 30 pack yellow ones from Costco but around $23?

    • I have only one car and so use these from Kmart. 6 for $4.

So far after couple years still nice and soft, maybe used once or twice a month. Use 1 to wash, 1 to dry/wipe polish off, 1 to apply polish, lasts probably 1 year.

  • Is this more or less than 1kg? - ie the big w $10 for 1kg of microfibre https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/392585

  • Coming up as $45.99 for me

    Gear Up Microfibre Cloth 40cmx30cm - 36 Pack - GUMFC36-2
    SKU: A9726988
    $45

edit- Just read this is for tomorrow

  • Can't believe i took so long to discover them. Wiping surfaces is way quicker and you just dump them in the wash after.

  • Microfibres aint microfibres
