10% GST on Kindle eBooks

Seriously, what is this? Tax on a non material electronically delivered item applying to a transaction based on the default shipping address of the purchasers account.

Amazon Kindle announcement

Inclined to regard myself as an international citizen of the world, and change my default address to a more enlightened area such as the State of Oregon which is tax free.

Would this work, and what are your thoughts?

GST = Goods and SERVICES tax.

Delivering your 'book' electronically is a service and your electronically delivered book is also 'goods'.

Sure, I may sound miffed, but understand it can apply by definition and be applied by some overseas merchants who collect GST.

However would we not have to hand in our OzBargain badges if we willingly accept this Gerry tax? I say it's a no-brainer, we play along with Gerrys little game, and our move is simply setting our default address to a Gerry free precinct, and buy freely as do people in other countries.

      • yes if you don't like it, change your default address to the USA for example. Problem solved.

"Inclined to regard myself as an international citizen of the world"

Kindly only partake of the services provided by the world government if you follow this route.

    • Lol!
Just referring to how many folk here have done so themselves, changing their address to some obscure overseas address, none the less simply to qualify for a deal (Amazon credits, eBay US discounts etc).

  • Doesn't anyone download books about Linux ISOs??

All this griping about the Gerry Harvey tax.
its a nuisance sure but I don't see OzB banning "deals" from Harvey Norman or no one asking for a ban on Gerry Harvey bargains so Ozbargainers are still going to and using Harvey Norman regardless of the tax attributed to him.

Either ask Ozb to ban deals on Harvey Norman or stop whinging about the into on GST etc
