Time to stock up on a new charcoal chimney. I will try a bunnings price beat. the items look exactly the same, most likely come from the same factory in China.

  • I will try a an bunnings price beat.

If it's not exactly the same brand and model, you are wasting your time…

I'll buy one from aldi to show them. they know that I know they go on Alibaba and order a small pallet and get the manufacturer to put their brand on it. it is the same size, same specs….

      • I'll buy one from aldi to show them

Show them what you like, but if it's not exactly the same brand and model, you are wasting your time…

Just don't fall for their model number scam.

"No, this is a 123456'B' model" (b standing for Bunnings).
I purchased one, unpacked it in the store, started photographing it, livestreamed the unboxing etc.

Store manager asked why I was doing that in store, I explained "I'm proving it's the same product. The packaging is not the product. A product comes IN packaging, and you can keep it if you wish."

Suddenly a lot more compliant when their behavior is being broadcast live….. Jerks.

people are waking up that aldi are sourcing their hardware from the same people in China. I don't intend on paying $25 for the exact same item from Aldi at $8.

        • @djcharliek:

          Then buy it from Aldi.

Or waste your time. Up to you.

        • @b2dz:
I want to see if bunnings really take a fair approach to this. they v say they do but I'm not liking my chances. I go to bunnings and aldi regularly so I'm already there. There is barely any additional cost….

I know someone who didn't get a price match at Bunnings for a Weber because the store with the sale had different colours in stock.

        • @jv:

the ones at Bunning and aldi are exactly the same colour.

        • @djcharliek:

          Aldi don't sell Weber.

        • @jv: I was referring to the chimney. I already have a weber.

Is it the same brand though?

One of those catering size fruit tins with a few large holes drilled in it has done me for a Charcoal Chimney for years now.
The fruit + tin is usually less than the price of a commercial one, but if you're going to use or eat the fruit, the empty tin is free.

    • thank you for sharing. I will give this a go too.

  • the chimney doesn't make sense.
It has no air holes on the sides, only the bottom.

    needs more ventilation

    • +3

Does your BBQ have holes in the sides? it will work fine, it's called a chimney starter because it creates a "chimney" pulling air in from the bottom.

    • +1

If it had any more air holes it would not be a chimney and would lose the draw of air making it nowhere near as efficent at setting the top beads alight. This works the same way as a Kelly Kettle heats water.

    • it's silver colour in the printed catalogue but who cares….. I'll buy it regardless.

  • This is 5c more expensive than the bunnings deal.

Oh, OP mentioned it in comments above, please add to description - thanks OP :)

    • no stock. I rang a few bunnings in my area in Melbourne. maybe they have stock in other states.

Those charcoal starters look a lot like gloves.

I have both the heat beads chimney from Bunnings (not sure if they do a knock off Jumbuck version) and the Aldi one. The Heat Beads one holds more briquettes and hasn't rusted anywhere near as much in 4 years as the aldi one has rusted in the 2 years. BUT….

I think I paid around $20 on special for the Heat Beads on and the Aldi one was well under $10 when I bought mine. So even with the aldi one holding a bit less and rusting a bit more it's still a good buy.

These are welding gloves…. At half the price :)

  • I bought the aldi chimney starters. 2 in fact. I think the quality is inferior to the bunnings version and heat beads versions. I won't be expecting a price beat but I'll try. the leather bbq gloves also appear good. I bought a pair.
