Shell Helix HX7 Engine Oil 10W-40 5L $19.79
The Helix Ultra is awesome. I think it's one of the best synthetic I have used. Too bad I still have a lot of Penrite HPR reserves
removed. basically dupe comment.
Second this. I hasn't seen it on sale for a long time.

tl;dr there's no difference, so may as well buy the Shell while it's on sale.
There's no difference within spec :)
This is why penrite is popular. 5w40 isn't heavily regulated, neither is 10w50 etc.
This is how they get away with SL level Zinc, while still being an SN rating.
It's bloody sneaky (and for that I salute them!)
What that oil test is showing is very true.
Oil is a liquid film that, so long as it's there, is just as good.
Hell, cooking oil works for a while.
Oil IS Oil.
Where it changes is in unexpected circumstances. Like an air pocket from cativation, or a low oil scenario, or an overheat, or just a freak accident of bearing to crank.
This is where BRANDS come in.
They do formulate differently.
I'd take a High Zinc oil, or a Moly fortified oil any day of the week over a high detergent oil like this for ANY form of performance driving.
Zinc and Moly are both great Dry Lube, and great High pressure Friction Modifiers.
No\Low oil, but with a coat of Moly\Zinc? Would likely survive a few seconds. (or, minutes, if you believe the Moly test from the USA driving the car on an empty sump)
No oil, with no Moly or Zinc? Bearing will grip\bind.
But if your car just gets from A to B, then yeah, a 30 weight oil, is a 30 weight oil.
Don't break the film layer, and its total common sense that wear is 1:1.
used it today, seems like a very good oil.
Howd you get this news?
New Catalogue
I was wondering the same, because the site says there's no new catalogue. Wondering what other specials are coming.
Its just Club+ Email spam.
It's one of the few companies emailing not too often, and always having an actual deal in it.
Great deal on the Penrite oil. ~$6 per litre for my favourite HPR 5 oil.
Good oil. Recommended for diesels and LPG's as well as regular petrol.
was just replying to the guy who called himself an "oil nerd" and post got removed…. hopefully he still sees this..
I have a VW 1.2 tsi engine with 100k on the clock. VW spec is 504 5W-30 but every forum I read and even mechanics are telling me they recommend 5W-40 as our climate is different to euro. Does anyone else have experience with this and what would be your advice?
That was me.
100k-km is well past break in, b=things like bearing clearances and pumps will have truly worn away a little, and Piston Rings will certainly have had some wear (I don't mean bad wear, I just mean, it's been driven, so ring gap will be bigger) by now.
Simple rule of thumb.
Lower the first number, the better.
As close as possible (but depending on climate and driving) for the second.
Long story short, if you "Jump in your car and drive", look into HPR5.
It's a Penrite 5W-40 and would likely be ideal.
Meets VW 502, VW 505. Doesn't meet 504, but that's just because it has high Zinc IMO, and all that means is that you polute SLIGHTLY more.
Boo hoo, keep my engine running thank you. It's a Euro spec 4 thing.

If you let it warm up every time before you drive, 10w40 will be fine.
Thank you kindly, very helpful information.
Full Detergent Oil.
Amazing for a 'first fill' on any 2nd hand car to watch oil come out JET BLACK.
Talk about aggressive (but not harmful) cleaning.
I like it, but I don't run it long term.
How well does Shell engine oil compare against: Penrite, Mobil, Castrol, Valvoline, Nulon and others brands? I've never used Shell engine oils before.
