not a fan of this gst thing

      • +23

        It's very taxing!

      • +3

I'm more than happy to pay Tax and 10% is fair. However the thing that concerns me is, is the money actually going to the Australian government?

        Hopefully all of it is.

        • +2

More of our money going OS, no doubt more fraud… Is PayPal on board for reporting their sales from these big OS sellers… Can of worms opened…

        • +1

@Scotch: I'm sure PayPal would comply. But AliExpress payments don't go through PayPal.

        • +1

          @Scotch:

They have their own AliPay not PayPal.
AliExpress just connects sellers who do the shipping so it is impossible for Customs to even count AliExpress packages, so high chance the 10% just gets kept by Ali.

  • Thanks, needed one of these!

  • +6

I have the old version, very useful little gadget!

Beware the tendency for your fingers to get pinched when taking your phone out!

    • +1

I learnt the hard way! The way I take it out now is I use the phone to push the arm out (instead of my fingers).

Is it worth getting the new version?

    • I actually like the old version a bit more. :D

  • will this work with an iphone plus?

    • +4

I don't think so. Plus is 6.2" and the Rock is up to 6".

      • +5

        thanks for clearing that up…

        • +1

          That's twice today.

        • +4

@Clear: so it happened two times? Just trying to make it clear

        • +1

          @joeyy17: That's clearly what happened.

    • +6

I use one for my 7 plus. It's… not great. The phone fits inside the bracket, but is too heavy for the bracket to actually hold it up. To counter this, I rest it on my bulky aux cable and that kinda works? It's a bit of a haphazard system and you would be better off finding a specific holder for a plus phone I reckon.

      • Tried it on a plus, far too hard to pull the arms apart and insert the phone comfortably.

    • Yes. iPhone 8 Plus pretty much maxes the grip but it works. It is a bit heavy for the vent clamp though. I find myself pushing it back in to see if it’s falling out.

  • +1

Bought one of these ages ago, it's a decent little unit but keep in mind that it sits very close to the vent on my car (Camry), meaning it's awkward to mount the phone and very little flexibility.

  • +2

There is at least one drawback for this type of car phone holder: when the air conditioner turns into heater mode, it will be too hot for the phone, and some of them might stop working.

    • +12

Just block the vent that you have it plugged into

  • +1

I quite like this phone holder, but sometimes it falls off. Still better than suction cups failing all the time though.

    • +4

      Get a CD slot mount.

      • +2

Woah, did not know this existed. Do you know if this ruins the CD player? I know I will never use it in the world of bluetooth but prefer the idea of not ruining things.

        • i used one of those for a few months…not a fan. It damaged my CD slot cosmetically, wasn't very sturdy either…massive eye-sore as well

  • -1

i have this, it's okay. But i much prefer this for the convenience.

    • Got one.

Ready to use free returns lol :)

      • you won't need it
I have tested many and this is elite

        • does the magnet mess with the phone compass or GPS?

        • @fredblogs:

I would say it depend on the phone and position of the magnet
I have never heard of this problem

for iPhone X I am using the thinner magnet right at the bottom of my phone in between the case
Therefore I can still use my anker wireless charger

note I just shoved the magnet in I didn't stick it onto the case or back of phone

this is rubbish, I got 2 from last deal. None of them last 2 weeks.

    • +6

      could not agree less

      • meaning…
" I couldn't agree less" means you disagree completely?
        Reddit

Just checking as curious about quality.

        • +3

Don't have time to read the dissertation there sorry :P
          I disagree completely.

I use mine every day, it's very solid. A mate has my old one which was an earlier model from ROCK, used daily, very solid.
Chances of being disappointed following the $4 spend are pretty small IMO.

      • +1

the joint part of the vent clip and phone clip with use for 360 Degree rotaion will getting lose after few time use.
so the phone will not hold at position you want.

I got one $2 from Kmart is way better than this.

        • +3

Maybe. Maybe the next $2 one from Kmart will have a dodgy clip that gets loose.
You know you can tighten the 360 degree rotational ball with the big nut (?) part right?
I don't know, I don't have shares in ROCK, but mines been ROCK solid, and I've adjusted it a few times and switched it between cars etc.

    • +1

      I had a similar experience

    • I bought one of these updated versions and found it much worse than similar products because of the style of airvent grips and the ball-and-socket joint. The spring-grips do not connect as securely as the rubber friction-grips; the ball-and-socket joint vibrates loose eventually (no matter how much you tighten it).

      • I now have a "gravity" style holder similar to this which I find almost perfect, but I had to add a small square of floor protection pad to the back of the lower arm to protect my dash.

    • I've had one for the last 2 and a half years…only stopped using it because i got a wireless charging mount, but it's still in my car for the occasion i have the Cricket on in landscape mode while…….driving

  • +3

Never had this one but the Kmart one I bought for myself and family has never had an issuein 3+ months of use

    • +1

Daiso also has these for $2.80 available in black or white

    • +1

Just bought a similar looking car vent phone holder from Coles last night for $2. They were setting up the promotions area with a bunch of other car accessories.

      • Me too, I thought much easier than buying online and it has slightly more flexible mounting slots

  • What is so good about this device? I see Ozbargainers love it. I use a magnet style clipped to the air vent, which works great for me. Whats the advantages of this one?

    • -1

This has that tightening wheel for a firmer grip on the vents. Magnetic ones tend to interfere with the GPS operability of the phones, IMHO. My Samsung S8+ struggled to catch the GPS signal when used with one of the magnetic mounts.

      • A static magnetic field will have no effect on GPS signals.

A metal plate in your case (or the mount, or car), on the other hand can mess with reception.

    • At this price they are perfect for rental cars, won't cry about forgetting it and the green is easier to spot when left on a vent.

  • +2

I have had one of these. Please note that the clips are so tight that it literally "wilted" my OnePlusOne a bit. Which was enough for the panel to come loose at top left corner.

I will advise to stay away from this.

  • +1

Thanks, needed one, bought two :)

  • Does this hold on to circular air vents?

  • 3.15 here from ebay

    Link here

    • That's a generic copy based on the old edition. Not a genuine Rock 360.

  • Same one? Currently $2.50 USD @ Joybuy

Ugreen phone holder currently $1.50 USD @ Joybuy

    https://www.joybuy.com/3790446.html

    • Was originally going to post your first link, but it's not the updated edition, see pics for the differences. The updated edition is apparently much better.

  • Bought a few last time, never arrived 😕

  • I have used the original version daily for a year and can't fault it. Even the packaging it came in made the product look like it should be selling for way more than $5.

Note that I don't ever remove the holder from the vent, which is possibly why I don't experience some of the problems that others seem to have.

  • Word of warning. I LOVED the first version of this so purchased x2 of these ones in the last deal. The new design is heaps worse ! The clip is nowhere near strong enough & everytime you try & remove your phone it comes off. How can you go from a perfect design to a useless one ? Madness…

  • These things aren't perfect, but they're better than anything else I've used. They occasionally work their way loose from my vent. I've learned to just make sure it's securely attached every time I use it. Definitely worth the cost.

  • +1

Are there any difference between this and the $4 Kmart one?
    https://www.kmart.com.au/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDi…

  • I had one of these cheapies, can't hold the heavier phones properly, in the end I just ended up biting the bullet and bought https://www.jbhifi.com.au/gps-car-audio/car-audio-accessorie…

Provides a far more stable mount and since the rear hooks onto the plastic vent vanes it can handle heavier phones.

You can see how the clip works in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQ8VBC7ArB0 it isn't the same holder, but the vent latch mechanism is essentially the same.

  • can't attach to the vent properly… always falls off. :/

  • +1

i think i saw these selling for $2 at Coles Doncaster Shoppingtown yesterday.

  • +1

Vent mounts suck. Your $2 air vent mount will cause $500 of damage.

If you want to break the air vents in your car it's just more efficient to use a large kitchen knife.

    • It looks similar to the holder Uber provide. I was amazed how well such a simple device worked (my first phone holder). I was using mine dozens of times per day and never had an issue with breaking air vents… might be more related to the quality of the car?? ;)

What I didn't like was having to remove my phone from the case to use it (it really did some damage trying to leave my sony smart cover on), and sometimes it seemed a bit lose and my phone wouldn't sit quite where I wanted it.

I now have the Blitzwolf magnetic holder someone posted on ozbargain. Wasn't happy about gluing a bit of metal to back of phone (I don't use a case anymore - see above), and it stuffed up wireless charging, but very happy with my phone holder.

edit. I forgot to include my point! I love air vent holders. Keeps my phone nice and cold, and couldn't pick a better place to hold phone.

    • +1

Do they really damage the vents? How exactly? Has anyone else experienced them damaging their vent?

  • Got one last time. Not the most practical gadget compared to the Blitzwolf magnetic holder

  • +1

Wow, that was frustrating. Have never made an order through aliexpress before, so I just tried to order through the app, but my order got instantly closed. Tried again, instantly closed again. Queried it with live chat, got a bot who said my orders were "closed due to potential security reason", and to try either with no coupon (why bother with the app then, the only incentive is the $4 off coupon), or to "order in a normal way" (I flat out have NFI what that means, I thought that I was ordering in the normal way). I sent a query to the seller to see if they can let the order go through, but so far I would have to say that the app was a very poor experience, and to not bother if you're a new user.

  • Price showing above 6$

  • Mine arrived. Not a fan of this, the vent can't hold the weight of the phone. Plus getting the phone out pinches your fingers. And it feels like it could easily damage the vent if you're not careful.
