Not a great time to sign up for a new iPhone X because new iPhones will be announced in September. But if you don’t really care about that, then I suppose the equivalent of $40 a month for 200gb on Optus isn’t bad. But otherwise I wouldn’t really recommend signing up for this right now.

    • 200gb for $40? don’t see that plan?

      • There's a referral link on ozbargain that gives you 20% off plan fees

        • -2

yeah but still with 20% off there are no plans with 200gb data for $40

        • -3

          @ujwols:

oh yeah. I don't know anything about 200 gb for $40 month. That guy is smoking some mary jane

        • +29

          @ujwols: iPhone X 256 = $1829/24 =76.2/month
116-76.2 = Approx 40/month for the plan inclusion

        • @MatthewSoul: iPhone X can be had for $1450-$1550 easily from Facebook marketplace/gumtree.

I was considering an option to sell it for $1500 and just keep the plan , still not decided but let’s see

        • +2

          Where’s the link?

        • +2

@johnno1987: he seems to be referring to this deal

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/383154

However, this deal is now expired

        • +3

@ujwols: you gotta have some balls to buy an iPhone X off gumtree lol. If that phone gets stuffed, your warranty is going to be a nightmare to claim.

        • +1

@Blitzfx: I am talking about sealed box, Au purchase with receipt

        • -4

@ujwols: If you dont mind used ones there were some on eBay for 25% off (Luvyourphone).
Personally I dont recommend iPhone X though. (Using Huawei P20 pro waiting on Mate 20 pro)

But yeh if you are doing it just for the plan then I suppose you get the most expensive phone.
If you sell it for 1440 then its 60/month which equates 56/month for plan which is still good for 200/205gb(Online bonus I think) and unlimited IDD.
          Good luck

      • +16

        Hes talking about this,

        $116 x 24months = $2784
Outright RRP for iPhone X 256GB on apple : 1829

        $2784 - $1829 = $955

        $955/24 ~ $40/ M for 200GB.

  • +24

I mean if you need 200 GB (who on earth uses that much on their phone plan?) and want to pay $2700 over 2 years then sure this is a great deal.

    • +2

Yep, but plan is to share data with wify and also use it partly for home broadband when I wish to watch 4k contents occasionally 😀
I am sure , I will not waste even 1MB out of that 205GB data allowance 😀

      • Video is limited to 1mb/s so no 4K streaming.

        • I am not talking about “data free” streaming, don’t mind using data out of 200gig

        • Pretty rubbish video quality even at 1920x1080 if your limited to 1 Mbit/s

        • +4

@Diji1: no it is not limited to 1Mbit/s

        • How can Optus know if I'm streaming video or not?

        • @Lukian: What if I use a VPN?

        • -8

@AustriaBargain: if a provider is shaping data speeds based on data source (i.e. Netflix servers) (which they very well can and probably do), a VPN isn't going to help you at all.

VPNs obscure the path that the data might travel, and sometimes encrypt the data itself, but they do not change the source of the data you are requesting

        • -7

@AustriaBargain: traffic flows for streaming video still has a distinct appearance evens with encryption over the top. Depends on what equipment the ISP uses.

        • +7

          @fleetfeather:

Not sure where you and lukian got your information, but both are wrong. A VPN (encrypted or unencrypted) will allow for full speed video streaming, though will use data (ie not unlimited). All Optus can see is random traffic to an unknown server - they can't even see it's video streaming. You can confirm this yourself by connecting to a VPN, watching some videos then viewing data usage breakdown in the Optus app. In my case, "UDP Traffic" was the category for VPN usage, while there was a seperate "video streaming" category which increased when steaming videos (no matter of source) when not using a VPN.

Edit: Seems "other usage" also increases a bit, but for the majority of the VPN usage it seems to just categorise it as unknown UDP usage.

          TL;DR:
False information. Optus can't see source through VPN, but it won't be unlimited or free in that case.

        • Regarding Netflix, most plans with Optus come with unlimited Netflix streaming (through the Netflix phone app) and also unlimited Spotify streaming. I think Optus can track some data if through certain apps.

        • @dyl:

Just wondering where everyone got this "1Mb/s" figure from.
Does Optus say you will get that speed for Spotify and Netflix, or do they say that's the speed you will get for ALL VIDEOS such as YouTube? And do they try and justify it as saying "we slow it down, but its unlimited" because that's still not fair.

4G-LTE speeds can be as low as ~15 Mbps around peak-times. That's still at least x10 faster, very large difference.
And during regular use people typically get around ~30 Mbps. Whilst the peak seems to be somewhere close to ~50Mbps for most users.

Unless they are talking about the "Telstra Endless" contract, where after 40GB's it gets reduced to ~1.5Mbps without incurring a fee or getting recorded.

        • @Akya: No, they just see the server(s) you’re connected too and trace/throttle your usage that way. That’s why using a VPN means it’s no long data free and streams at full rate.

        • @Kangal: Optus plans can include unlimited Netflix streaming, but limited to 1mbs. Effective, unlimited SD streaming.

        • @Kangal:

Unmetered TV streaming is limited to standard definition. From my experience they don't even limit it though, they simply use your data if it's using more than standard definition would (ie over 1-1.5mbps). If this has changed VPN will still work though, but from what I can see it hasn't changed.

        • +1

          @da-ilks:

Isn't it 1.5mbit? And it does 480P stan and 720P netflix for me.

        • -2

Okay so a couple of things. 1) Although I don't use Optus, I doubt that the extent of their data tracking capabilities are contained within the consumer data meter app. Think about why that might be the case for a second… 2) IF a VPN does allow for full speed data of otherwise-throttled data (which it looks like you're saying it can in this instance), then that's a pretty poor effort from an ISP which still does have the ability to throttle such things if they wanted to. Poor on their behalf, but obviously great for us lol

TL;DR Sorry for being incorrect about what Optus is or isn't doing with their data throttling, but no, I'm not incorrect about what an ISP can potentially do with their data throttling via VPNs if they so choose.

        • @Akya:

Netflix is a $5 a month addon now

    • +1

$1,391 per year is an astronomical amount to spend on a phone plan with Floptus in my opinion. If you can wait until September, you'll save yourself a lot of money.

Geez I have unlimited wifi and still don't use 200GB. Let alone on my mobile.

      • +4

In my place, I get best reception with Optus compared to Telstra/Vodafone.

My wifi usage is about 350gig per month, mobile data about 50gig

      • +1

        Why September?

        • +2

          new release of iphone

        • The new iPhones always seem to be released in September.
iPhone X2 (or whatever) comes out and drives the price of this one down.

        • All new models that will look like the iPhone x

        • Do you remember?

        • +1

          @fleetfeather: the 21st night!

    • +6

I live in a spot where my only internet options are satellite or mobile. This would be a great option for me. I’d get an iPhone X with 3x the data of a satellite plan with no on/off peak and it’s still ~$40 a month cheaper

      • you can also use wifi-calling if you need it too

    • there is a thing call data pool. I m the one cancelled my crack TPG and Jumped into this plan. Speedy 4G network with no lag when watch YouTube and streaming videos. Also I use this plan to update my xbox, switch and all other devices.

  • +2

Nice, 6gb for roaming. Think I could get Optus to increase my roaming data allowance for the one I signed up 4 months ago?

    • worth asking for it

  • -1

Def not a 'great' deal especially since you'll miss out on the new one that should be announced in 1.5 months.

    • +13

And by then it will only be 12 months until the next announcement, may as well wait until 2019.

      • +4

or wait till 2020.. & then u may as well get this deal.

        • or 2021 when it will xxxx (prawn version)

    • +2

so you're saying that the new iphone will be offered at this same price?

      • +2

Good point, it will most likely be at higher price point given the current trend with iPhone pricing.

  • Have Optus Sport and no 20% off email:(

    • probably check your spam folders?

      • I have the free Optus sport but no email

  • New iPhone is releasing in Sep

    • -3

Yeah, and there is another ome releasing in September next year also.

      • There would be more price drop after September launch. So this may be a bad deal for many.

    • -2

      iPhone X was November 2017
So no garauntee we will see release in September.
Also inside word is australia may be dropped from the launch countries list this time around. Meaning a longer wait than usual.

  • +8

I have way to get the 20% discount on Optus plan, plus I was informed that Optus is doing another promo next week on their high value plans, not sure if the 20% discount can be bolted on or not, feel free to pm me if you want to find out more

    • -1

most of their offers are usually cannot be stacked.

      • I believe popcorn's mate can do better offer

    • Man, i'm on the $145/month plan, signed up in May with s9+.
Anyone know if there is a way out?

      • U paid full price? doesn't go well with Ozbargain spirit 😀

I know with post paid plans they have 30 days cooling off, but you seem to have gone beyond 30 days now

        https://www.optus.com.au/shop/support/answer/try-our-network…

        • Yes full price 😅
desperate time, and no good deals from any of the other carriers.

        • @Woosta: lol, I can understand. happens to me all the time 😀

      • +5

Man, i'm on the $145/month plan, signed up in May with s9+.
Anyone know if there is a way out?

Other than faking your own death, no.

      • Maybe pay the s9+ out, and rejoin this one, you can always call them to make sure.

        • I think i will just wait to re-contract after 12 month and get a new phone, but knowing my luck, there will be no special.

        • @Woosta: haha

        • @Woosta: that sounds like a better option than faking your death 😂

        • @Woosta: i have done this myself too, i paid off my 2 phones on the account which cost me around $1800, in order to be on the new plan with reduced monthly cost and more data. i have sold the new phone on the new plan which kinda helps paying out for the payout figure. as a real life example to you, i was paying $180 per month for 22GB data, now i am only paying $88 per month for 60GB data.

      • Legally speaking, if the service you are being provided is in a black spot, you may be able to have your contract terminated. But, that is only in cases where your service provision is IN A BLACK SPOT REGION. Just check your service every now and then and whether you see it flip to 3G and 4G every so often. Best way to tell.

    • I'm interested can you PM me

    • way to get the 20% discount on Optus plan?

      thought that had ended??

    • Interested too! Does it stack with the new offer you posted in your other comment?

      • yes it would, my friend tried it yesterday and it works, turn on your pm so i can forward you the details

        • Could I get the information you're offering? Thanks!

    • As i'm unable to PM you as i'm a new member, could you please try and send me a PM with the details?
      Thanks

    • Are you able to pm me the way to get the 20% off please?

    • Could I also get the information you're offering? Thank you!

    • Could you please also pm me the information? Thanks.

  • +3

Can't believe people spend this much a month on a phone (unless claiming it on tax for work?)

    • in my case, my company pays for it 😀 so I am not paying a cent

      • +2

Same here. I use a HTC 10 as my daily with Jeenee $9/month sim and have an iPhone 8 with Telstra for work. Whenever I need to use heavy data, I just hot-spot my work phone. Some apple fanboys may hate me for saying this, but my HTC 10 S**TS on my work iPhone 8 in every possibly way. I honestly can't stand iOS.

    • $116 is a lot? Back when everyone was on 2G and phone companies charged per minute, monthly bills in excess of $100 were very common. Just talking on the phone for an hour each month could easily reach $100.

  • Is there a list of roaming countries for the 6gb? I've probably spent $200 so far this year on overseas roaming, and gotten way less than 6gb for it. Usually roaming excludes Canada though.

    • +1

Search Zone 1 countries on Optus website. Canada is eligible for this BTW.

  • has anyone actually got a code? lol

  • +3

If your buying to resell your looking at resell value around $1400, seen plenty of used ones sell for $1000-$1200, a lot of dreamers trying for $1500+.. only going to get harder to sell for a good price as sept approaches

    $116pm x 24 = $2784

    Minus

    Resell phone $1400

    = $57.66 for 200gb sim plan

Also 105gb plan available for $115 for those not targeted

  • +1

I remember the time when iPhone cost only $70/month. Man times have changed.

    • +1

Agree.. They use gigs to manipulate the prices.. best way buy outright n go on sim only

    • -1

iphone x 256gb cocts apple <$300 to make. The rest is all profit for everyone but mostly apple
