Best Value Coffee Bean online?

I thought I'd create a thread for online coffee beans. Post your recommendations!

Mine below

Manna Beans are pretty decent, although lack of roasting date when purchasing is a downer.
http://www.mannabeans.com.au/buycoffeeonline/
Aldi beans are ok (IMHO a little less than ok)
After high praise, I've given beanbay.coffeesnobs Espresso Wow beans a go (yet to try). Link below.

Any others? I'm mainly interested in buying directly from roasters (as thats where the best value is in my opinion).

  • Robert Timms Coffee Beans 1kg are the best and come on special two or 3 times a year at Coles between $10 to $11 half price. Coles only seem to sell it when it comes on sale. I think they are much better than Lavvaza. I always stock up for six months. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/235299 The coffee is not burnt like some comments. It has a strong taste which would not be for everyone. I just add a little extra frothy milk for a cappuccino. I love it and drink it every morning.

Good post. I agree Robert Timms is good value and consistent, bur prefer Aldi's 1kg blue bags (crema), I've found that the bags are marked with an expiry date up to 13 months after roasting. But it can't be bought online- anything that can will cost more with delivery.

    • Have you tried the new single origin from Aldi?

  • Robert Timms and Aldi aren't really online.
Twocracks and manna are OzB staples

  • Beanbay are our go to shop, we usually get the sample pack which gives you 4 250gm bags of beans. Have tried a few of the others promoted here but keep going back to BB. They roast on Sundays and Tuesdays.

    • Beanbay is the retail part of Coffeesnobs.com.au, for anyone wanting to give these beans a try. They roast on Sundays and Wednesdays not Tuesdays, they tend to roast to order and I get my beans in a couple of days in Sydney, Coffeesnobs are in Melbourne. My favourite bean is Fiefy's Barista Blend.

      • They seem quite expensive though?

        • They are quite reasonably priced for fresh, quality beans, you can pay up to $60/kg. If you are comparing to supermarket beans then, yes, they are more expensive however there is no comparison in flavour between fresh roasted and supermarket beans, in my opinion.

@robbyjones: I currently buy from the local roaster at about $53 a kg. And just trying Manna now at $30 a kg. Never going to buy a supermarket bean.

Great Post. Bookmarked. Can you also put a link in the description for the respective store sights.

@simonda4222 or @ resisting the urge What type is the Robert Timms beans. Just called expresso coffee beans? What should I look for. We always generally buy from specialist roasters or the Beanery in Brighton Vic. Which get their coffee from roaster in South Melbourne.

I've tried both Bay Beans and Manna who post on Ozbargain.
I prefer Bay Beans for the price ($50/kg compared to Manna's $60 for just shy of 1kg).
I prefer Manna for the speed of delivery to a remote location (2 days compared to Bay's often 1 week) and marginally prefer the beans also.

Are you paying extra for postage / not buying promo beans. Manna is usually 1kg for $35 or 2kg for $60

    • Correction: 2kgs, not 1kg.

  • I'm not a huge fan of cheap retail beans. Because of the profit margins required to sell something on the shelf in retail, I'd imagine any cheap beans would mean they were bought at ultra cheap prices (and therefore likely to be pretty poor quality). Buying directly from the roaster usually means less profit margin is required. Logically, this would represent the best value bean.

I buy the superbar beans from Genovese coffee roasters for my daily coffee. They cost $38/kg at their retail store in Coburg, however online they are $40/kg. Genovese has a great sales area with lots of coffee machines for sale and a huge collection of vintage machines on display. Well worth a visit.
For something special, I buy the sweet georgia brown beans from Gridlock roasters. They have an espresso bar at the roastery where you can buy beans as well as try the coffee. Just be aware they close 1pm.

If you are looking at subscriptions (I usually go through 1kg a month)
Double roasters in Marrickville $38 / kg delivered every 4 weeks
    Pablo & Rusty $38 / kg 4 weeks

Some other good ones that are buy in store, prices are from ..
    Ona $40 / KG marrickville
Aslan Coffee $39/ kg St Peters
    Steamroller $35 kg Earlwood
Harris farm $22kg (Bondi Junction/Randwick) sometimes roasted on dates are printed and are less than 4 weeks.

I spent 6months buying Aldi beans and although they are good, they are really not in same league as fresh roasted coffee.
I live in inner west and have bought a load from around the inner west.

If you are after fresh beans and like your coffee, consider buying a Behmor 1600+ coffee roaster for approx $500 then buy green beans for approx 10-15 dollars a kilo. Takes approximately 20 minutes to complete a 400g batch. You loose about 10% weight from evaporation when roasting. Green beans last for 3 years so you can buy in bulk and keep postage costs low.
Home roasting quality is a lot better then some of the options listed above

    • Interesting. I've considered this. I might work out on a spreadsheet when my break even point is to see if this is cost effective.

It's worth it alone just for the convenience. The only downfall is you really need to roast for a week's time. Coffee needs about a week to degas and become much nicer.
I always buy my green beans from here https://beans.net.au
There is a lot of info over on coffeeshops forum regarding this roaster.

        • Have you worked out costs for roasting yourself vs buying online?

        • +1

@datzed: No, I was in a position where I needed fresh coffee regularly. That and curiosity got me into roasting

For online orders, my thoughs on the ones I tried:
    - Mana beans: Like them, will order them again (Ordered twice their 4x480g $59.95 Delivered deal). Agree the lack of a roast date listed is a negative. That said, my beans have always been fresh.
    - MyCuppa: Like them, will order again. Great selection. Tried many of their Grand Cru’s which I like most of them from. Always freshly roasted
    - Pablo & Rusty: high quality single origins. Haven’t tried their blends. Their latest deal was a great price, normal price is pretty expensive.
    - Bay Beans: good, but not great imho. Don’t think I will order again.

I like variety so think I will keep mixing these up

  • Thanks for the post guys. Great info and more places to try.

Usually buy from my local roaster but ends up about $56/kg. All the online deals for 2kg would take too long to use and go stale. And most don't include a decaf option.

  • I'm a bit late but Sweet Yarra Coffee are really good, the guy who runs it ran a deal on OzBargain several years ago and I've been using his coffee subscription ever since. Individual bags are a bit exxy but the subscription is $320 for 6 deliveries, 2kg per delivery. Works out at about $26 a kilo and it's good stuff. I usually get the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, but he's got a very nice blend that's easier to dial in that the single origins. In the early days I'd just send a text and he'd rock up at my house with coffee the next day, now it usually takes two maybe three.

  • A little late to the party but I highly recommend Kiki & Co Coffee.
    http://kikiandco.co/

My favourite is the Ziggy blend but love the Bodhi as well. Its affordable for a roaster

  • About a year ago, I bought a kilo bag from a deal online from a post on OzB, and the bag itself was compostable, which I thought was a bonus. However I can't for the life of me remember the company. Any ideas?
