Ivacy VPN Lifetime Subscription ~ $40 AUD ($29.99 USD) @ Stack Social

21

Got this off Gizmodo… who maybe got this off here maybe? Can't find anything posted here recently.

Anyway, this seems to be a good one. No logging, a fair amount of servers, etc. Note: HQ is in Singapore, part of the 5 Eyes group. They don't keep logs though, so just keep that in mind. Also, TOR won't work on this apparently, so better to not do anything super-illegal on this. All your regular grey area stuff is alright. <wink>

The fact they sell lifetime memberships means it won't be around for too long…

    • They've been around since 2007 apparently. I don't know… I just got this as a one off. I'm currently using PIA, and that's costing me $40 a year. I use it mainly for connecting to free Wifi on my phone when I'm out and about. I thought maybe this might be a cheaper alternative.

    • that's what I figure when I got it 18mths ago for $us29, but hey that's about 1yr of a half decent provider, so I figure I'm ahead.

  • I got a lifetime license from a Neowin deal a while back, the only issue I've had was I had to change my DNS settings to use OpenDNS for it to mask my IP properly (haven't had to do this with other VPNs in the past), but has been working perfectly fine since.

The fact it doesn't change your DNS automatically after connecting is alarming. For a lot of users this means they've wasted money on a VPN when it's leaking DNS info anyway and they have no idea. This alone is reason to stay away.

      • I agree. If I'd known about the DNS leak in advance I would have gone elsewhere but no review I found mentioned it, and it was the only fairly cheap VPN with a lifetime license I could find that had decent reviews.

I'm happy to stay because I've already bought it and haven't had the issue since, but when I talk about VPNs to others I won't recommend Ivacy without first warning about the DNS info leaking.

        • It hasn't happened to me, were you using their app or the openvpn configs?

        • +1

@chorong: I only use their app now but it was happening with both for me. The app has been updated a few times since I first got it, I'll give it another test over the weekend with default DNS settings as they may have fixed it by now.

I grabbed one of these 18mths ago. They're actually quite good. their speeds are 1/2 decent and they seem to fly below the radar a bit so I found many site didn't block them (.e.g BBC, ABC, Hulu).

But the big advantage I found was the3 split tunnel VPN, so you can tunnel certain apps via the VPN & other by your normal VPN. e.g. I can send BBC Iplayer via the app & a UKVPN, to pay content & then use screen mirroring to cast it to my TV.

    • Is that something that's easy to set up? Is it on their client or something?

      • +1

yeah that's for the Android app (and Windows too IIRC).
YOu goto Menu -> Split Tunnel -> Enable, then you tick the apps to use the VPN.
you can't have different apps using different VPNs though.

        • Perfect! Thanks!

  • netflix unblock?

    • No does not work with Netflix;

      • Damn this is what I honestly only really needed it for. Just wanna access all US/EU content. Would be pointless for steam as valve sometimes ban you if they found out you purchased from another region so not worth the hassle if you have a pristine large long time steam account.

  • I got a lifetime deal with Windscribe a while ago and recently read this on a Windscribe blog. I think it could apply to many of these lifetime deals.

Also of interest by the same author, is this article about 5 Eyes that may alleviate some fears.

    • that articles crap - misleading by design or in todays lanquage fake news.

      • Both of them? I'm still a bit of a newbie at this, so happy to be enlightened as to why they are misleading.

        • 5 eyes piece

        • @petry: Thanks. I'll do some more research.

      • Do you have a more detailed rebuttal?

  • The DNS issue reported above by supabrudda and the "lifetime" gimmick means this gets a neg from me.

    • Apparently it's an add on? https://www.ivacy.com/features/

You'd think that should come as standard. I'm using PIA, and I think it changes it automatically.

      • It's worded pretty badly, but it's supposed to be stating that it's not a paid add-on; you get access to it with Ivacy, IF you turn it on. Problem is that the guide on how to activate it is for an older version of the client, and the newer versions don't seem to have that option anywhere I've looked.

      • The fact that DNS protection is an add-on is a joke. Why have a VPN at all if everything you do is leaked anyway?

  • +1

They resell PureVPN, so you can be the judge if you want to use it for non-geoblock purposes.

I've been using their 2 year deal for a while now, and it's been pretty good in terms of getting around geoblocks on primevideo/bbc iplayer. Their Chrome extension also works most of the time to unblock Netflix, but it can be a bit flaky at times.

I initially bought them so I could get on some Korean streaming sites, and while the sites work, it's been a bit slow recently so if you're looking to stream on pooq/tving, it might be better to look elsewhere.

    • And PureVPN do log incoming IP and timestamps and have cooperated with the FBI in the past.

      • Lol seems they are truly a bad VPN then or a Very Public Network or Virtual Police Network. Haha 😂😂😅😆😊😈😇
