Give partial credit to this dude here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/391558

    • Will give him full credit. It didn’t come up on my search though..

  • Go Harvey go!

  • Damn…
I've already got the 35mm, but this is a neat deal and really tempting. Anyone know if the CA is any better on this lens than the 35?

Keep in mind this is a FX full frame lens. This will be 75mm on a DX crop sensor body.

Aren't all lenses sold in their 35mm equiv. focal length?

      • +1

Typically, yes. This is an FX lens, so it's actual focal length is the same as it's 35mm equiv. length: 50mm. On a DX body with a smaller sensor it's equiv. focal length will be 75mm.

Probably worded it wrong, what I meant is that Nikon sells both a DX and FX 35mm. If you used both you would get the same ~50mm regardless of which you used on a crop sensor. It's only important to note if a lens is designed for a crop body (DX) as would you get vignetting on a full frame camera.

  • I’ve had this lens for a while. Really like it, takes amazing photos!

  • Fantastic lens, great for portraits and low light …

  • My favourite lens i own. Good price as well

  • Oooh, I'm torn - nice price… I've got the 50mm 1.8D - it's older and cheaper brother - but not sure the real world benefits between that and the 1.8G justify making the purchase, even though I could sell off my existing lens… Anyone have/had both and care to comment?

Most reviews seem to suggest the bokeh might be slightly more 'pleasing' on the newer lens but that, other than being sharper on the edges, the 1.8G one doesn't offer much advantage.

If you have a body that doesn't have an focus motor inbuilt then obviously the 1.8G is your only option.

If this was the 1.4G, I'd certainly jump on it but don't think that will ever be sub-$200!

    • Isnt the older lens a "screw driver" lens ?

      • Correct!
Both my dSLRs have an autofocus motor in the body, so the 'plastic fantastic nifty fifty' has been fine.

But… I ended up grabbing on of these anyway - at sub-$200 it's a nice price for a better build, silent wave motor and few other perks. Not that much between them though for most applications unless you're shooting wide open.

        • Great. I too price matched at JB. Put my $200 gift card to good use.

Nice match for my aged workhorse D700.

  • Own it. Good lens.

  • Thanks OP. I ordered one to pick up

    • No worries mate

    • Or only ever make a purchase there when a best in market price is offered - don't think this lens has been sub-$200 before.

Was able to pricematch this at JB then used the 5% discount for thursday and then used discounted jb hifi giftcards, total spend of just ~$170.
