This feels expensive for what it is…am I just super tightarse?

I'm going to say yes, you're super tightarse :P
A few years ago, something like this would probably be closer to $100 and probably still is for industrial units.

I would break it down as (If I were to assemble this from 'cheap' Chinese off the shelf bits, not BOM cost)

      • $1 Temp+humidity sensor
      • $3 Bluetooth LE module
      • $1 Supporting circuitry
      • $1 Nice case
      • $1 Shipping
      • 10c Battery included!

That's $7 of value right there, not to mention the effort designing it etc.

But that's just my opinion, I'm just amazed I can put sensors everywhere for the price of lunch :)

        • That has no case, no display, no input power and no Bluetooth and already costs $5, plus you need the arduino so i think you're making his point that the xiaomi is pretty good value?

@fuzzybunn: Works with the Raspi - who doesnt't have a raspi?

Also, a Raspi Zero (with required attatchments) does a lot more than display humidity and temperature and costs the same price.

No I wasn't saying that. I'm trying to work out why a device that basically performs one function cost so much. You haven't convinced me (but you don't have to, don't worry).

        • I enjoy tinkering a lot with arduino/pi/etc but still buy xiaomi stuff like this - the massive benefit for me is simplicity and power usage, running for a year on a coin cell or triple A isn't trivial with dev board platforms and it works fine just fine out of the box.

The comparison with a raspi zero isn't exactly fair - you can stick this on your fridge for a temp/humidity display but do the same with the raspi and you have well… a circuit board attached to the fridge :P

    No built in clock ?

(Wish I had bought more then…)

    What?

You know more thermometers doesn't mean you can reduce the temperature!

    😀

    • what if I bought 100 and taped them to my body

  • A pointer to above mentioned "Bluetooth" gateway?

My one from 1 month ago still hasn't arrived…

    • postage from China usually takes 4-6 weeks.

    • I have been waiting for mine to arrive and today Joybuy informed me that it was held a security and returned to them because it contained one battery. They are providing me a refund.

Super strange considering its a standard battery and my second purchase was delivered.

      • This product by itself doesn't contain a battery, at least my one didn't. It eventually arrived… just took over 3 weeks.

  • I love mine and I don't know why. I'm currently in hospital, and it gives me great pleasure to have it on the wall (using one of those honana jelly holder things) so that when I feel like it is hot and it's actually pretty hot they can't gaslight me. No I'm just kidding I've never done that but I enjoy looking at it and knowing "oh, so that's why my chicken got soggy" or "no wonder my throat is as dry as toast" - again, fanciful thoughts that really, it's just kinda nifty to entertain.

  • These are great.

  • If you're using home assistant or hassio refer here: https://www.home-assistant.io/components/sensor.mitemp_bt/

  • I had three arrive a week ago.
I guess i should no longer be surprised at the quality and acuracy of these compared the the cheap ones i have all over the houes.
You can literally get up close to it and see the moisture rise from your breath in seconds.
