This is getting really tempting. Must resist.

  • Man.. Please don't make me buy this. I migrated away from desktops to a gaming laptop.. :(

    • +1

Could go well in a eGPU …

      • +1

Agreed, pop this into an ASUS ROG XG Station 2 for $427 and you'll have a portable option on the go and a powerful gaming setup at home. Assuming your gaming laptop has TB3.

        • No TB3.. Was not an option two years with my Metabox.

    • Why not have both?

      • +1

Eviction from my man cave soon for my son to take over the room.. no space to put it in my small house.

        • +2

You can take him… wrestle for the room. I am in the same position here…. looks like I am evicting the car and taking over the garage :).

        • Like the guy said, 1v1 your son for the room.

    $699 from non PROXY sellers

price jackers can go sit on this stock for another month as GPU prices plummet next month

    enjoy your stock writeoffs

Thanks for the info. I think I managed to resist it with the info you provided.

  • good deal. below 600 and not galax.

    • +7

I'd probably take the galax over the msi armor.. Just saying.

    • Any particular reason?

      • The armor is one of the worst coolers out there. It's just anemic.

Before you buy I thought I would let everyone know that this card doesn't have a backplate. If that is a concern to you!

    • What are the implications of this? Thanks.

      • The backplate keeps the card more rigid, gfx cards, especially the big heavy ones tend to suffer from sagging.

        Look up gfx card sag

        • +1

This variant doesn't have a huge heat-sink fan assembly so no sagging issues requiring a back-plate for rigidity.

        • @xuqi: I've had this card for a couple of years - no saggin here either ;-)

        • You can just admit it is just for looks, nobody will judge you for it. If you really want to go all in with this you can also say that it helps with the cooling (it does not), GPU sag (because a long plastic bit always does that), it looks better (the only valid reason here) and you can dust the card (or you can keep the dust nicely tucked away between the back plate and PCB).

My dream pc build is becoming more and more in reach as the day passes.

    • +22

And more and more obsolete lol

      • +1

Lol haha well yes and that too also.. but man I think I can taste it.. ah well we shall see if I even want it by the time it is sub $300.

        • sub 300 will take awhile…

        • Sub 300, you'll be waiting awhile. You could get an rx580 for around that price if you're primarily into 1080p gaming or less

  • +1

I am waiting it out for the 1100 series. Refuse to buy this as new announcement due end of July.

    • new series will be $1k..

      • I know but why pay 25% less now for much less performance… plus I have a 980 ti which I will give to a friend as I upgrade

        • I need more friends like you

        • Wanna be friends?

  • wow..

  • +2

Good price but buy with caution. The announcement of the next generation of Nvidia gfx cards is just around the corner. Crypto mining has pushed up the price of all these cards, with the new cards on the market these now older cards will devalue quickly.

It's a bargain today but night not be a bargain in a few weeks.

    • fwiw, we never touched the GTX 1080 for mining as it performs worse than the 1070.

      • The prices and Ebay (people selling 10 cards at once or 10 ads for the exact same card) say otherwise. Miners from what I know would have bough 580 only, 1070 afterwards when these were not in stock they went to 1080. It was not as profitable but it was still worth it.

        • +1

No, we went to 1060 and Vega. I don't know anyone who used 1080's to mine on the community

  • +1

The prices are good because sales are low and new NVIDIA cards are coming very soon I will wait for a 1170

  • +2

I pulled the trigger on this yesterday actually, one thing nobody here seems to have mentioned is how much second hand GPU's cost. A brand new 1080 shipped for under 600AUD is if you look across the globe a great price, almost unbeatable.

There is a new one coming out yes but even when the 2nd hand market floods with 1080's they'll still fetch a reasonable price (I expect ill flog this in 9-12 months for $400 because the next gen $400 point wont get anywhere near the performance of a 1080) and the top tier next gen cards are likely to be out of reach cost wise for many gamers - now with that being said who wants to buy my gigabyte 970 GTX. Mint condition with box :) Still runs the games I play like overwatch and tf2 very well.

    Cheers,
    Bogrolls.

edit: also maybe I got lucky but I bought it yesterday around lunchtime and received an Australia post notification last night saying it would be delivered today - I'm in the Newcastle NSW area.

  • Haven't seen any/many 1070 deals yet…?

    • Yeah, because the 1070 is still profitable to mine with

      • Curiously, what makes the 1070 better than the 1080 for mining?

  • Is there any cooler worse than the MSI Armor cooler?

  • Is it worth waiting for the 1170? I'm out of the loop with video cards. Price seems good for a 1080 with all the mining going on increasing prices…

    • If you don't get buyers remorse when you see better deals in the coming weeks/month(s) you'll be right.

      Otherwise wait till next gen.

      • It's a hard decision. I'm still running a 7950 and I've really wanted to upgrade for ages but couldn't due to the mining craze pushing up prices (I really only wanted a 580 or 1060 for $300 or less). Willing to stretch my budget a bit for this card if the 11xx series is going to be hard to find at a reasonable price.

        • +1

          1060 is 348 new https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/390533

otherwise you could get a 1060 for 300 pretty easily 2nd hand. sold mine not long ago for that.

          up to you.

        • +1

I sat on the fence a long time with the 1080, actually bought one about a year ago on eBay and dick Smith didn’t honour the sale saying they had no stock.

Given its under 600 brand new inc delivery it’s great value. I really doubt any next gen card under 600 delivered will beat this in the next 12 months.

One thing that is likely is the longer you wait the cheaper these 1080’s will get. I will say msi isn’t my favourite brand at all, but I just couldn’t sit in analysis paralysis anymore.

I’m a casual gamer at most. Time poor!

        • @bogrolls:

Arrived today goes great with the Acer predator Monitor I bought from the other ozb thread.

If anyone is interested in a mint 970gtx (gigabyte) let me know.

          Cheers

        • @bogrolls: You still have the card?
My EVGA GTX 970 just fried itself :(
Also from Newcastle but would want to see card in action if possible as I've been burnt before.

  • I remember buying GTX 980 Ti last gen for $1000 AUD and 4 months later GTX 10 series came out and the 1070 having similar performance for $650 and more ram. I had buyer's remorse. It's not happening again I will wait for the 11 series to change my GTX 980 Ti

    • PM me if u end up selling the 980ti please

  • +1

You could just buy it on a credit card that gives you the difference if the same product drops in price up to one year after you bought it.

  • This is now showing as out of stock.
