Fully Refundable Purchases - No Credit Card fees or cancellation fees - Suggestions Welcomed

Hi Everybody,

Recently signed up and received the Amex credit card, and am looking to spend approx $3,000 for something fully refundable.

Qantas flights charge a credit card surcharge.

Expedia.com.au processes payments overseas, so up to 3% fee will be applicable.

Some hotels (ie 5 star hotels in Sydney) charge 1.3% to over 2% credit card surcharge.

Any suggestions for what I can 'purchase' to later cancel in 3 months time, without any fees?

Thanks

If you’re thinking of spending $3000, getting the points and then refunding your purchase but keeping the points think again!

    • Why couldn't the OP transfer the points to QFF/VFF, then generate the refund to send MR points account into negative, then cancel the Amex card? Would be a tough phone call to make to Amex for card cancellation, but it should work on a technical level.

      Why's that?

      Please elaborate…

Because when you refund the purchase of whatever you bought, typically they'll only refund it to the card you made the purchase with. When that happens, AMEX aren't dumb, they don't count the refunded purchase as part of your $x spend.

If the merchant you bought the item/service from allows you to refund to a different card, then you're fine but otherwise your "plan" won't really work that well

I guarantee it won’t work. When you get a refund on your card the points go back with it.

It’ll also be against their t&c’s.

I’m guessing you can’t afford $3000 or don’t want to spend that ? Over 3 months it isn’t much.

Keep in mind if you book a hotel for $3000 and select the cancelation option. You’ll still need to pay your card up front when the bill comes.

Thanks, but reason is as per below:

Recently had an ANZ card, closed it after receiving all the points. A few months later had an issue with a supplier, and the transaction was refunded.

The refund went into my closed account, and I opted for a cheque from ANZ, which I deposited a week after (3 months since spent, and 2 months after closing the card).

The QFF points were never deducted, hence why I'm considering it.

          Thanks

You'll probably find this was indicated to the bank in some way. You didn't initiate the refund the supplier did. It was their stuff up so maybe in that case you keep your points.

Here https://imgur.com/a/DJOSXIU is my statement from a recent refund at Bunnings (the rest of the transactions are coffee at my workplace cafe which I have blocked out for privacy). As you can see the points were deducted.

  • I'd like to know how too.

  • Does it matter if Qantas charge a CC surcharge? I would expect it to be refunded as well

  • Is this for something legal or illegal?

  • I've only booked for hotels in Australia, but Expedia/Amex didn't charge any extra foreign transaction fees when paying with my DJs Amex

Buy 3 iPhones at David Jones, keep 3 months and return them for a full refund.
