What to buy? Require $1,500 spend within 2 days.

Hey all,

I've been slack tracking my AMEX and I need to spend $1,500 within 2 days to hit the spend for 100k points.

Any ideas? Discounted gift cards?
I've heard of people buying items, and simply getting refunded (Unsure what would happen when awarded points)
I don't really have any bills, or anything I can hit right now.

I'm going to ring Bupa and see if I can pay 6 months in advance for my private health.
Does paying my ATO tax bill count? Lol

Any good ideas would be helpful.

Thank you

Do you have anomy other insurances (house / car etc) that you can switch from monthly to yearly?

    • Nope
I'm hoping Bupa will let me pay 6 months in advance which would be a good solution!

      • +5

you can pay for the whole year in advance… typically most do this before the price hike each year

        • The whole year would be like $2,000 plus.
I'll ring and ask what I can do!

@lyork: I've never heard of a company that had trouble taking money from you, I think you'll be just fine.

  • I think the ATO bill is not valid for AMEX offers.

    Need a TV or anything?

    • Nope
      Just bad timing :/

Westfield Gift Cards for max value of $995 per card with $2.95 card fee; use them at Coles and Woolies and etc. until you run out

    • +4

Yeah, I was thinking Coles or Woolies gift cards.

      • You'd have to buy a lot of them in one go as they only tend to be $100ish I think (unless in the case of Coles, you grab a Coles Myer one and put the value at $1500 if that's possible)

      • Where can you buy Coles gc's at a discount and they accept credit card? I used to buy from Union Shopper, but they now require bank transfer.
I noticed recently that Woolies egift cards through Cash rewards have a statement on them that they have "no expiry date"

I agree - Westfield Gift card or Westfield XS (which is just an EFTPOS card). The latter has a $4.95 fee but that's quite reasonable if you basically want a debit card. You can then use it at Woolworths/Coles and even buy cards with this.

I use Woolworths Caltex stations for fuel so if I had to do the same, I'd be buying $1500 of Woolworths cards via Cashrewards. They no longer have an expiry date I believe.

ask family first if they can help you with this problem. perhaps cover a bill for them in exchange for the cash?

in before some says 'buy me a video card' or 'bitcoin'

    • +1

Yeah, I'll ring my mother tonigbt and ask if she has any bills I can pay.

      • might be time to donate to a charity, something you believe in, if you need that extra little bit to get you over. there comes a time…

        • I do donate.

Unfortunately I was meant to go to Europe, but cancelled due to a property development, otherwise I would of hit the spend easy

  • How much is 100K points worth?

    • $1,000 on avg

But in terms of flight rewards much more, aka business class flights 250-270k points return to Europe etc

  • +1

You can pay the ATO but it's 1.45% surcharge that's tax deductible but is $145 for every 10K worth the points.

    • It's just because I have to hit the spend, I'm not going to cry over a few dollars. It's a 1 off and my tax bill isn't 10k. I owe like $165 or something haha

  • Any good XBOX deals out ATM? Ha

Fuel cards a good idea too? Mate just recommended it

  • You are welcome to buy me a computer. Haha, probably just buy Wish eGift Cards in advance since they never expire. That is if you go to Caltex or shop at Woolies. Maybe treat yourself a bit to a new phone/tv/Bose QC35s and some eGift Cards. Might even look for some furniture? Maybe even donate to a charity to claim for this financial year taxes, not last years.

    • Already have a new phone, got new headphones etc

I'm definitely going to look at the Wish gift cards, I'm sure I'll use them at some stage. Fuel card makes sense for me, as I know I'll use them too.

    • Buy a computer with amex offer from HP.

  • top up tolls account

    • +1

      No tolls in SA thankfully

  • Giftcards the way to go given the longer expiry now.

Pre buy any upcoming big presents?

  • Kiva.

  • If you've got private health fund you can prepay a years worth.
Fully refundable travel tickets (usually business class)
    Gift cards

    • I don't want to pay a full year, it'll be way over what I have to spend. I'll ask tho if I can pay 6 months.

I cbf with the flights, but I'll probably get a bunch of gift cards. I definitely will use fuel cards, and probably Woolies.

      I'll be busy tomorrow.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

U can prepay 8 months or whatever makes up the $1.5k

      • If you prepay a full year, then at least you will save by getting it at the current prices. Guaranteed to increase every year.

  • +3

You can prepay utility and council rates up to 2 years in advance.

    • Prepay a big credit onto your toll etag.

    • Any recommendations for websites which do easy refunds as a back up? Thank you

      • The Iconic? Buy two or three Marc Jacobs bags

    • I've done it through expedia with no hassles.

  • Lots and lots of toilet paper, flour, sugar, toothpaste, jellybeans, wine… Anything household goods you can store.

  • a bottle of grange. value is steady.

  • +1

    Some interesting ideas hahaha
Paying my health insurance in advance makes sense if able, fuel cards aswell as I'll be doing these either way.

EFTPOS card from post office sounds like a decent option too.

I can't really be bothered going through a refund process, especially if I can just buy something I'll use anyways. Off course it's a pain outlaying money upfront but it's gotta be done.

I think my 100k points are for Qantas or unsure, so I was going to ask to transfer them straight away, hence refund may not work. I'm undecided weather to put them towards QFF etc

  • If anyone knows any hotel booking websites which do easy refunds, less hassle let me know. It'd be a good back up just incase.

    Thank you

    • I have never ever had a problem with many many refunds from Hotels.com ($A) and Cheaptickets.com ($USD)

Try to pre-pay your health insurance. Medibank allows it.

  • I work at a travel company and you could just pay onto a file to give yourself travel credit that can be used towards anything travel related or could put it onto a travel cashcard (can also be used in Australia so you could technically just withdraw the cash too)
