Side Gig Ideas: I Have a Good Job However

Hi I currently have a good job however… I don't work that much, and like many other young people I am trying to build a savings.

I am paid an okay yearly salary but get paid a bonus that is around 50 each day that I actually work. Recently I have been on standby most days (3-5 days a week) thus taking a solid pay hit. I was wondering if anyone has any good side job ideas in a similar context to something like Ubereats where you can work when you want and bail if I do get called into work when I am on standby which encompasses typical work hours.

I have no problem with trying something like ubereats (car is too old for uber) I haven't heard good things about it and thought maybe I should ask on here for other ideas. An ideal job would be something 'unofficial' as technically I am not allowed to be working during standby for safety reasons if I am given a long shift at the end of my standby so I am not fatigued etc. So in short I looking for ideas that can be low pay but needs to be super flexible.

Thanks

Keen to know what your current job is?

      • He is prob a bus driver?

  • If you know how to repair things like electronics and phones, thats a good little money spinner. Most people are afraid to open their devices up to replace a battery or solder in replacement parts.

Its gotten me by in the tough times.
The only problem is that the work is not regular.

Another is if you are good with IT, there are heaps of people out there that have no idea how to set up a simple network or navigate windows 10 and need tutoring.

    • I like that idea I often have fiddled around with fixing things like that myself and setting up IT things for family, friends homes and businesses. Would just posting on gumtree be the best way to start to begin with?

Airtasker, Facebook groups, reddit forums etc

        • Okay I'll have a look.

    • Curious, how did you go about getting the customers in your case? How was it delivered - mail in?

  • I have always always wanted to have my own food truck business. There's quite a few around that may be suitable for you as a part time job. They usually have the same 1 or 2 people in them and then the rest of staff are flexible or rotate so might be worth a look.

    • Thanks I have a good friend who has worked in one and I thought about it however I can't as no one in there right mind would hire me as I would have to disclose in the hiring process that I could bail on them with no notice to go to work.

    • In Perth that is such an over saturated market and you gotta over something unique but still with broad appeal.

To be honest I think the ship sailed on that one a few years ago.

Food trucks are labour intensive and constant. Hardly a side gig

    ….

    Are you a pilot?

"Safety reasons" tend to be good ones. If I were you, I'd consider how much I'm risking my job if it's discovered I'm working a second one when I'm being paid to be on standby and basically be rested, and also the risk that you DO get tired from your second job and end up having an accident or other issue.

At the very least I wouldn't be doing something manual like Ubereats that'll actually tire you out.

Thanks I'm not but I can see how it may be similar. It is certainly something where I do not want to risk my job and safety. I would really only be entertained in doing something where it would be no more fatiguing then what I do on a normal day on standby where I see friends do chores and odd jobs for that reason.

      • Yeah. I second the "build computers/do IT support" idea above, but not really sure how viable that is. Other options, depending on your skill set, would be design related stuff, whether website or otherwise, coding projects you can find online, or (not face to face) tutoring where you look over people's assignments and edit, etc.

        • Thanks

      • Train driver, bus driver, ferry operator or any other job where the public depends on you to ferry them safely?

It does concern safety which is not exclusively my own and I take this very seriously. Thus why I am interested in doing something with this in mind where I can work if I was restless and would otherwise be doing something. To be honest spending all day resting and doing nothing for weeks on end I believe would not be ideal for my health and wellbeing thus leading to greater safety issues.

I think the correct term is "side hustle"!

  • You could rent yourself out on Locanto.

    • OP would have to be quite ap-Peel-ing!
      Get it, get it? :p

  • Ubereats don't pay well, around $5 delivery I think) and I dont imagine you will be picking up a lot of work in the morning, presumably most of it would be in the evening and some at lunch. I had a quick chat with a driver I spotted picking something up from my local chinese, he had driven from his home in a suburb that was 11km away, so about 30-40mins 20-30km driving for $5, yeah I don't think so.

Check out Airtasker, you can work at your leisure and do jobs that match your interests/capability.

sell stuff on ebay. find a niche product, source it cheaply, sell for huge mark up.

    it's passive and easy.

you just have to find the product(s) that sell, and can be bought cheaply.

make it something small that can go in regular size envelops (i.e. nothing you have to go to the post office for to post)

I've been doing it for a few years. I make some steady money. profits pay for all my online shopping. - there is a lot.

One product I had cost me $4 and sold for $40 (net profit after fees+postage was $32)

couldn't get enough of them. they sold as fast as I could list them.

    then my supplier shut down.

    • Sounds interesting and like a perfect fit. I think I might start racking my mind for good ideas.

Labouring! You can get $40ph or 30 cash and treat it as a gym sesh. Because you already have a job you could do weekends, after hours etc.

    I weld.
having a large bush property I had been welding garden ornaments to pass my time, the wife always wanted something different for the garden. Having easy access to large amounts of steel, new and scrap, the hobby got out of hand and when I had too many ornaments, I started putting them into the ground just within my bush property, certainly not scenic, no paths or facilities in the bush.

Somehow word got out about my bush block covered in random metal sculptures and people started asking if I could do custom pieces for their gardens. I've probably sold 30-40 pieces now, from sculptures to tables.

Also in talks to see if opening the property up to viewings is viable. I'm expecting it wont be as the admission fee will likely be pretty high to cover the insurance and permits needed, but worth a look see.

    • Sounds good! I have more chance being paid to stay away from a welder.

    • A good home or farm insurer will cover this especially if you don't charge
I work in insurance and we have a number of people who open their home for display gardens and art expos at no extra cost :)

  • Two of my friends advertised on backpage before it got shut down because of some issues in the US.

  • There is a podcast called "side hustle school" which you can listen to for ideas.

    • I'll give it a look I love a good podcast. Thanks!

  • My side hustle is fixing/checking/formatting/re-writing resumes. It’s good if you’ve been a recruiter or in HR before. I don’t charge much and can do it from home in the evenings (or whenever) but if you can do something like that so you could come back to it if you’re on call. If you’re good at excel there would definitely be work for that on freelancer.com and sites like that.

    • I'll check it out. Personally I have no experience in HR but can be handy with Excel.
