Dont buy a Smart TV. Get a good dumb TV and make it smart by shelling out $80 for a Android TV box. Smart TV's have such slow/bloated UI/UX, rare or no updates, low on memory space for apps etc
Agreed for the cheaper Smart TVs. The higher end ones are better in terms of specs and operation/features - but then the problem is the inability to upgrade, which means you'd get a new android TV box in a few years anyway.
Very broad question I know, but what recommendations for a good dumb TV? Or at least brands?
Thanks in advance.
Yes please, can someone recommend a good dumb TV - i think setting up an androide box is the smartest move
Kogan has some nice models. They use LG or Samsung panels so the quality is generally decent too:

Two 49" models for less than $600.
You can also do a search on OzB, though searching for "TV" comes up with a lot of irrelevant deals. But e.g.:
15% OFF Samsung, Sony and TCL TV's @ JB HiFi
Looks like these two

Please report back on your experience when you get time to test it if you decide to go ahead and buy it.
Kogan reviews are highly valued in this community or really any budget TV purchases because the first hand reviews are the best imho.
hdmi your pc to your TV.
I was thinking about getting an android box for kodi, then realised you can get it for PC on all/most OS. plenty of plugins and search youtube for recent videos on using add-ons.
Android/smart TV is going to have extra android ads.
Smart TV's don't stay smart for very long as they manufacturer won't keep them updated for more than 2-3 years. You'll also likely hook up something to it that is likely going to duplicate some of the smart functions anyway, e.g Chromecast, TV box or a game console.
My TV is connected to a Raspberry Pi 3 (mainly for browsing the web) and if I need to watch media / stream YT then I fire up my xbox, although the Pi 3 can do it too without much issue.
Up to what resolution and etc can the Raspberry Pi 3 handle for youtube and media? Also can the xbox do 4k HDR youtube or netflix?
Personally would avoid unless anyone else can give a good review on this unit.
The one i saw in store was very washed out and colours were not perfect.
Overall I wouldn't even buy it for a kids room or guest room.
