Please understand this is a cheap oil.
If you drive aggressively or have any form of performance vehicle, I'd avoid it.

Its not that it lies per se, it's that every UOA I've seen of it is garbage.
Feel free to do your own research.
BITOG forums are a very good resource for tests on this oil.

Oil is just a pressurized film layer, so technically ANY oil would work so long as you don't tear the film.
So in saying this, if the choice is between service for cheap vs. skip a service; do the service.
It'll also be fine for Nannas corolla that never see's above 3000rpm. (so really, almost all Auto transmission vehicles)
10w40 is a fine thickness for almost all vehicles in Australia; we don't get cold enough to worry about much thinner.

    tldr;
Buy this if you're feeling poor, and you need a service.
Also buy this if you drive a 'slow car' whos engine normally wont see high RPM or stresses (towing, mountains etc)
Otherwise, Shell Helix, Penrite HPR5, or Nulon, are all better options around this weight.

where does it say that it is suitable for performance cars?
This is a basic semi synthetic blend. For all modern cars and especially for aggressive driving / sportier cars full synthetic is recommended anyway :)

where does it say that it is suitable for performance cars?

Cars? I guess nowhere, but you can drive in a performance manner without a performance car.

End of their blurb on their product page:
        https://www.castrol.com/en_au/australia/car-engine-oil/engin…

"providing continuous protection for all driving conditions, styles and temperatures."

Group 3 can be listed as full synthetic by law these days, so it's best not to make blanket statements like that.
Just because it's full synthetic, no longer means that it's lab-made, it can still be Dino.

Also, a full synthetic (Dino sourced, or lab) doesn't necessarily mean its better; if it has a shit additive package.

        • I assume, you won't be tricked by all these gimmicks if just follow manufacturer's specs…

        • +2

          @Ametric: You're right, I won't be tricked.
I've spent too many years studying oil chemistry and nerding out about formulations and regulations.
I was hoping to prevent YOU from getting tricked by all these gimmicks.

There are PLENTY of times when manufacturer specs have been proven "fine" but far from "Ideal"
          2ZZ-GE engine anyone?
How about the Jazz CVT transmission?
          Subaru EJ208 block?

          yeah….. You get my idea.

        • @MasterScythe: Thanks for taking care of me (read ozbargain community), but I personally won't be tricked, as I have got education in Automotive field, and still remember all these oil / viscosity labs quite well :) I just posted this deal as the price is good and might be suitable for some people (their cars)

btw, not sure why you have been downvoted :(

        • @MasterScythe:

          What about the 2ZZ?

        • @Mellows: certain months of the 2001 specific motor has a VERY unique quirk. (debate still rages as to when the 'cutoff point' is for this issue). It also seemed to only affect the Yamaha heads on the Celica specifically.

Basically, in quite a few motors, they (literally!) drunk a sump of oil faster than a tank of fuel, meaning knock knock, who's there? Rod.

Arguments raged for years about leaks and shiz, but eventually a bunch of people stripped a few bad motors down and realised that the rings were incorrectly sized; and the engines were literally burning enough oil to empty a sump, but little enough to not actually noticeably smoke (after cat, etc).

99% of people forgot about this issue, as whole engines were replaced for free; so 2001 celicas are 'all OK now', but it was quite an interesting time.

If the car is still on the road today, it'll have a non-affected engine, but most people stepped up an oil weight to make sure it didnt leak past the rings, and also because of the large pressure drop (compared to VTEC, which also has a pressure drop) when the cam lift kicked in.

  • No deals for 5W-20 synthetic oil :(

Penrite vs NULON which one is better?

    • it is very subjective, I believe, both well-known and established Australian brands. I personally buying Penrite for both my cars when it is on special…

    • +1

What do you have that calls for a 20w oil?

While thicker oil doesn't necessarily mean more protection, a higher viscosity does usually mean a stronger film layer.
And as such, well, OFTEN (not always) more protection.

New Honda's spec a 20W I know, but they also allow up to a 20w-50 in the same car, if it's a hot climate.

Check your owners manual; If it allows for ANY 40 weight at all in our temperatures, I'd be getting HPR5.

      Otherwise, Nulon Full Synthetic 5w30
      https://www.nulon.com.au/products/full-synthetic-engine-oils…

20w in Australias climate is just madness. Probably fine in winter, but if you forget in summer, I'd be genuinely worried about wear metals.
Send me Used Oil Analysis' and prove me wrong!
However, so far all the 20w guys in the states are proving me right :P

Penrite Enviro+ Engine Oil - 5W-30, 5 Litre is on special also for $41.99

        • +1

Enviro+ is only good for low SAPS diesel.

It's an oil designed for low sulphur fuels, and all of our fuels are high sulpher in australia.
          https://www.racv.com.au/membership/member-benefits/royalauto…

          https://www.drive.com.au/motor-news/the-breakdown-australian…

Our current requirements state that 91 Octane unleaded fuel has a sulphur limit of 150 parts per million (150ppm), while 95 and 98 Octane premium fuels have a cap of 50ppm. Among developed nations in the OECD, only Mexico has worse petrol quality.

Enviro+ is NOT for Australian (non diesel) fuels..

          Rating E6: E6
As for E4 but with chemical limits to allow use
in engines with particulate filters and SCR NOx
reduction systems. Only for diesel fuel with
          <50ppm sulphur. 1.0% ash, 0.08% phosphorus.
          Euro 4 and 5.

          And the 10w40 Enviro+ is an E6 oil :(

        • @MasterScythe: Thanks, nice to learn something new :)
I think Nulon protect full synthetic 5w-30 5lt at costco $29.99 will have to do it

        • -2

          @MasterScythe:
If you knew as much as your are making out you would know there are 4 different "Enviro+" 5w-30 oils in the Penrite range, and some are suitable for our petrol in Australia.
          https://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/brands/enviro+?gclid=…

        • @LHSolutions: I always wondered what's the difference between the gold bottle Nulon 5w30 and the costco version. The only difference I notice is from the sticker. Costco's version has "molydtc" and the gold one has "dexos" for GM cars.

        • @whitey: Thats Correct.

If you knew as much as your are making out you would know there are 4 different "Enviro+" 5w-30 oils in the Penrite range

I do, and I do :) Thanks for checking though.

I thought we were discussing the 10w-40. as this is the weight in the description; sorry, I should have been clearer about that.
          Which is E6 rated.

          My mistake!
Feel free to take over and explain the differences to the people for me please, and thanks :)

        • @Volution: Nulon customer service rep said this to me: "…so the packaging is the main different between the products. Both are full synthetic 5w30 oils".

My partner loves talking on the phone so she gave them a ring and was told the same by Nulon rep with the addition that the golden bottle has some kind of a protect ingredient for the engine.

Like you mentioned "molydtc", it must be the only difference

        • +1

          @LHSolutions:

Like you mentioned "molydtc", it must be the only difference

This is the main thing you really want from NULON though.
