Laptop suggestions for parent

Hi guys,

Need some suggestions for a laptop for my dad. He just need the laptop for word processing and web browsing. No gaming required and may be watching online videos on odd occasion. He is well versed in the operation of a laptop and associated software applications, having had one for at least 10 years.

Came across this model and thinking if it is a good buy:

Any recommendation would be appreciated.

  • Why is your father's age relevant? He could have invented the internet for all we know.

    How about:

    • Thanks! Edited.

    • As somebody who is constantly looking after the elderly and their IT needs I can sympathize or is it empathize with OP haha lol.. OP I feel you :) I know your pain haha lol.

  • Probably a Dell 11 3000 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/338510, this deal comes back everytime Dell eBay gets 20% off which is quite often.

For an old person no doubt with terrible eyesight a laptop that small is a terrible idea.

Also that thing is so slow it will lag with word and chrome open.

And this is why the part about OP's father being 70 years old matters.

        • Whilst macular degeneration is related to age, there is nothing in OP's post that suggests his father has 'terrible eyesight', otherwise it should surely have been mentioned as a consideration.

But I agree that, for the stated intended use including online videos, this would be too small.

11 inch could be a bit too small. I think 15" inch and above would be just nice. His eyesight not perfect :P

Look into getting a chomebook if all they do is surf and watch youtube. It limits how much they can break and is fairly cheap.

    get a macbook pro

    • Yep. No computers last longer.

    • unfortunately he has been using windows for a while now and would be difficult to get him to get used to the apple mouse since it works differently. Thanks for the suggestion though.

  • I think you have made a good choice. Lenovo are pretty reliable so he should get a few years out of it and the keyboards are often pretty good for word processing.

Get an SSD and the windows start up time will not be a problem.

I don't have any experience with the non-ThinkPad Lenovo

    • I would not get a Lenovo from Lenovo.com.au. Been waiting 20 business days already. Shipping date changed over 10 times already. Customer service is useless.

  • That's a fine pick, would touch screen benefit him?

    • probably not. He does have an ipad so would think a normal laptop should be adequate.

  • If he watches a lot of youtube or netflix or just media in bed I highly suggest a 7-8 inch tablet probably android is best. I am getting one for my elderly house mate so he can use it easily in bed as I know using a laptop on your chest even if it is only 13-14 inches is still somewhat sore on the body especially after some time.

I personally use a Huawei Media Pad M3 8.4 inch Wifi only model with 4gb ram and 32gb internal storage paired with a 200gb SanDisk Micro SD card from Amazon US (Rest in Peace) but am trying to find something less powerful for my pseudo grandfather.

Worst case or Alternate scenario I set up a tv in his room wall mounted maybe somewhere but I think tablet is a must now for him as I see him carrying this much heavier laptop everywhere around him.

    • He has an ipad for bed time down time :)

      • Oh well then that's all good then haha :)
