55" TV for sub $1k?

About to get married and so looking for a tv for our new home. I've done some research and hunting around for EOFY deals, but wondering really what a good model would be from ozbargain's perspective. I've never bought a tv before so it's hard to know what to look for.

We are ok with using Chromecast for casting. We'd be keen for fairly good picture quality and colour at about 55" or something like that. Not too worried about 4k but it's a nice feature if possible.

My folks recommend a Sony.

What do you think would be a good model to look at for at the current sales?

  • if you live in Sydney or Melbourne metro and are interested in 65" then Kogan 65" 4K TV $719.20 Delivered would be pretty damn good

if I needed and was buying a large TV then I'd go for that.

Thanks altomic - reviews seem to say it's really slow software and doesn't do standard quality stuff (non 4k) very well. Does anyone have experience?

      Otherwise a great buy!

Aside from the Kogan deal, this is my current front runner:

This seems like a decent price TV if comes around again and Sony are generally pretty good at SD quality and sound.

JBHifi still have the Sony 55" X7000D for $998. It would be the best option.

      This.

      Sony 55" X7000D

      You mean the X7000E ~ 2017 model.

In my view, stay away from the cheapies like Kogan, Bauhn, Polariod and JVC.
      They have mixed reviews.
If you go for the Hisense, choose the P7 and not P5

Edit: JB doesn't seem the have it. However, Myer does

      • Yeah sorry, 7000E. Its not on their website but I have seen it in a few stores, just call around.

    Only name brand 55" TV I could find under $1000 was this Samsung KU6000 @ $999: https://www.arc.com.au/product/60966 Reviews: https://www.productreview.com.au/p/samsung-ku6000-series.htm…

    Personally though I would buy this 65" TCL @ $996: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tcl/tcl-e17us-65-4k-uhd-smart-led-… Reviews: https://www.productreview.com.au/p/tcl-50e17us.html

    • Thanks for reminding me about the 65" TCL.. i forgot a 65 inch 4k tv existed below 1k besides kogan, bauhn, aldi, big w cheap brands and etc

Also cannot decide between the Samsung KU6000 or the Sony X7000E or Hisense 58".. the TCL 65" E17US doesnt seem to have good reviews on that jbhifi listing so atm am leaning towards the other 3 unless i can find some good words about the TCL.

  • Thanks for all the great thoughts, guys!

We looked at all of the suggestion options and settled on the Hisense P5 58". I appreciate that the P7 is better, but it's also 50% more expensive than what we paid. That would be well over budget.

The Sony 55" is a great choice but was tough to get a hold of. There are none in our local area and we're too pressed to travel far at this time.

The TLC 65" looked pretty good for the price, but the Hisense - while a shade smaller - seems to have nicer picture quality.

    Thanks again everyone :).

    • If you really want to get the best imho TV out there i would follow the Americans the current near leaders of the tech world aka whatever they choose to buy or decide is best they flock to as would be the normal common logic but alas this is not always the case 100 percent of the time so take this advice and suggestion with a grain of result.

If you are not afraid of using a US to AU power plug adapter of some kind and figuring out third party shipping from Amazon US to Australia as this product doesnt ship to Australia directly and dont mind maybe some US to AU incompatibilities in the software as it is meant for a US household and area/region etc then try for a

TCL 55S405 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Roku Smart LED TV (2017 Model)

      $379.99 USD

Current No. 1 Seller in LED & LCD TVs with 2,816 reviews averaging 4.3 stars but basically what I am trying to say is it is the current budget or even just best bang for buck 4K TV with HDR atm right now.

Only released less than 1.5 years ago on February 15 2017 you might even be able to pick up a nice cheap second hand one from American Craigslist or there counterparts of Gumtree if you really wanted to and then just pay for shipping (which is the killer in this suggested deal)

No idea on shipping costs for that size and weight of a tv but i know that if it is under $1000 AUD i believe could be USD not sure that you dont have to pay for import duty fee tax which is usually 10%?

anyways yeah i usually end up looking at either taobao or aliexpress or amazon recommendations as the top sellers are usually there for a reason and for good measure. No idea what EU uses as their main online shopping portal but i would imagine it might be similar but then Voltage and Current differences might require an adapter again or prevent usage on our Australian electrical circuits with different countries standards and all.
