Carry on Suitcase Advice

Whats up peoples!!!

I don't know anything about suitcases/luggage whatever…

I need some advice from people that know their stuff

Largest suitcase size that I can rock carry on all airlines

What's the best case you would recommend w/ price being no object (I know this is OZB) and I'm not talking paying extra for Louis Logos.. Only paying more for the quality.

Thanks in advance for your help..

I'm going to be living in a plane so it's important

    BUT

I'm not talking paying extra for Louis Logos.

    That's a FAIL right there!

Are you planning on hanging gold chains on your suitcase? If you are, that's another fail.

  • i use eaglecreek… had it for quite a few years now, fits on overhead luggage on all the flights i've done and haven't had any issues
though the current model looks crap imo

Come on, why don't you Google the max sizes yourself?

I know it's your first post, but quit giving everyone your stinky attitude and you might get some help.

It's not actually that easy to get accurate information on that.. a lot of websites claim different things so I thought asking the frequent travellers in here might be a better idea.

I'll tell you what.. you name an airport anywhere and I'll meet you there and give you some of my attitude in person

55cm. Weight is usually 7kg so get a lightweight suitcase. Any one of the top luggage brands should steer you pretty well.

    • ^ this. 7kg limit, particularly well enforced on low cost carriers, so you need you bag to weigh next to nothing.
Personally, i run with sports bags. Weigh next to nothing and can fill with the full 7kgs of my stuff.
No point taking a 2kg bag and losing 30% of your allowance to the bag.

      • It is always a risk. I have had thousands of trips with AirAsia, and I have never had my carryon weighed departing DMK/Bangkok International and domestic(they try to push you through asap). But always weighed departing Sydney and Phnom Penh. But, at the same time they always ignore a very small backpack bag OR a small folio bag (Which incidentally I pack with my heaviest items). In Phnom Penh, if you are over, they allow you to move the weight from your main cabin bag into smaller carry bags (eg hand bags, plastic bags etc), which you then carry as well!

  • The best bag imo was the flylite 1.7kg bag.

    Amaze-balls.

I have 2 of them. (Flylites).

    Alas, it is no more.

I travel around often for work and have swapped out carry on bags about 5-6 times over the past 9-10 years.

I've become an American Tourister fan recently as they use slightly older Samsonite tech, but can often be found at bargain prices.

Considerations I now give a bag:

    • Weight
    • Embedded wheels, 2 of (I previously thought 4 was the go) - most of the nasty wheels which are external to the chassis are limited to the super cheap cases these days
    • Ability to be pulled at high speed without fishtailing or when being pulled up gutters or on uneven ground (yes some of them do this and lose balance behind you when you are in a rush)
    • External pockets, I've been a hard case nut for years, but I have just gone back to a soft carry on as they have more external pockets for stuffing things into when in a rush, small hard cases also require about 50% of the zipper to be unzipped to get anything into them at all.
    • Mesh separator or compartmentalization within the bag, keeps everything from mushing into a mess.
  • soft back pack- weighs less so you can carry more.

Osprey Porter 46L Carry-on Ultralight Travel Backpack

I bought this because at the time of purchasing, it was one of the largest (and lightest) carry on's you could take

    Go to the Airline website…

Although most airlines have similar guidelines, they're not all the same.

In particular, domestic flight for carry on can be smaller. This must be a nightmare for international travellers who fly to Australia… then fly Jetstar… who stringently enforce rules.

Then theres the weight issue, 7 or 10kilos… enforcements.

Some airlines allow an extra hand bag/laptop… others include it with the weight

    • I agree. Work out which airlines you are likely to fly and research. Once you have your bag size, and know whether or not you will be pushing your weight limit, only then come back here for a recommended bag.
      Search OzB too - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/cabin%20baggage

  • Currently I use:

Victorinox Spectra 2.0 55cm Hardsided Dual-Access. Hard case, super light, lots of useful compartments. Fits a large laptop comfortably. I tend to have a soft tote bag full of stuff in the back section that I take out for the flights, and leave the hard case up top. The design is slightly flawed in terms of security but I'm not bothered about locking my carry-on luggage. I use this for work trips.

Osprey’s Meridian 60L soft case. Great size and very flexible in terms of options on how to use it - just main pack, main pack with backpack inside, just backpack (with main pack put in as checked luggage on the way home after shopping!). Lots of features. I usually remove the backpack straps and stuff other things in that section. I use this pack for holidays.

Both meet requirements for size across almost all airlines (Qantaslink is one exception, but they don't seems to care), just have to be careful about weight depending on the airline.

Look at the original post (before the revisions).

OP sounds like he/she is about 15 years old and is here to boast about travelling a lot.

      • -1

Nah this 15 year old is still around PIMPS

Thanks for your constructive advice though.
I don't want to boast about traveling a lot.. there's nothing to boast about.. I hate it
Just trying to make it as comfortable as possible.
I won't have time to wait around for checked baggage and want to fit as much in as possible to carry on. I appreciate the good advice so far. Don't really like the idea of sports/duffle bags as I probably need a bit more protection as will be getting the sh11t beat out of it. I realize now that can't be guaranteed on all airlines but so most peeps are saying 7kg / 55cm is max?
Any more suggestions for actual brands / model of cases and links to where I can buy them would be appreciated. ya'

  • Try a North Face duffle bag! Durable, lightweight and can be used like a backpack.
