  • I turn my wifi off overnight. Will that cause any issues with these?

    • It mostly resets and reconnects on the Mobile app for me. Mobile app works locally with wifi once restarted.
Needs relogging into Google-home sometimes for me.
Alexa has no issues at all.

      • Do you also turn off the mains at the switchboard so you aren't affected by the radiation from the wiring?

    • +1

      Why?

      • -6

I've spent many hours researching the effects of radio waves on brains and other organs and I believe there is evidence to support EMR is unhealthy and possibly quite damaging, sooner or later.

Kids developing brains are even more susceptible and I have three to protect so turning it off at night dramatically reduces exposure time given they are at school 5 days a week.

I'm working on achieving no wifi at all but it's particularly difficult in a rental house so for now it's a mitigation strategy.

        • +2

I totally understand and support your thought process @skysurfer.
But with Telstra Hotspots, Neighbours wifi, All schools wifi………….I dont know how much an impact turning off makes.
Still worth the thought and attempt.

Before someone rips into you - would you mind posting the most convincing/compelling article you’ve researched?

So far every theory I’ve researched has been shot down. Wifi frequencies aren’t ionising, so can’t hurt you the way that gamma/X-rays etc can. There’s been no link to cancer that’s been repeatable (animal experiments or otherwise). If it was harmful, then the much stronger TV and radio waves should have cooked us over the past several decades.

If wifi is damaging (but tv/radio isn’t), we’ve learned something very new and unexpected about physics and health.

I don’t want to turn this into a shouting match - just curious what’s so convincing?

        • +10

          @enigma48:

          Wifi frequencies aren’t ionising

WiFi is also limited to 100mW of power which travels in every direction, a rough approximation means that about 0.25mW of power is absorbed into your skin/clothes at 5m from the router.

If you were to lay down in the sun you would be getting about 800w of much higher energy radiation (light and IR) - 3.2 million times more than from WiFi.

The human body emits around 100 watts of heat (infrared radiation) so having someone 5 m away form you in a room will cause you to be subject to 1,000 times more radiation than WiFi.

Can't understand why your getting negged…it's not like you came on here preaching and simply answered a question. You do whatever you want to protect your little ones mate, I say good on you ;)

        • Smoking or even secondhand smoke is likely to cause a cancer than some radio waves.

        • Remember to vaccinate your kids!

        • @enigma48:

Congrats for having an open mind.

I had to dig and read/watch/listen for a lot of hours to get from someone who has used and loved wifi since it was invented to someone who thinks it is probably not healthy. Similarly you nor anyone else here is going to change their thinking by reading a couple of paragraphs of whatever I could cobble together so I'm not going to try to convert anyone.

The only short thing I could say that may make someone think about it enough to motivate them to question what most people don't, is history is littered with products that the general populace took to be safe and were even sanctioned by government and/or subject matter experts and/or professionals and/or the vendor but much time and a few determined questioners proved them to be quite unsafe, sometimes killers.

Often our ability to create a product with very attractive benefits we all want exceeds our ability and/or will to determine what side effects said product has, especially in the longer term.

        • @urbancartel:

Thanks for the support. It is crazy to get negged like this but it doesn't phase me, it's just the way the world works.

        • @wjb:

That's a good parallel to what could be happening here right now; 70 years ago if someone posted a notice on the town notice board or whatever equivalent there was to an internet comment thread, that said smoking kills, they would have been derided by most, just like now about wifi. A lot of people smoked, doctors even publicly supported smoking, sometimes in cigarette ads. It's not possible something so universally accepted could kill people right?

And here we are much later all enlightened by the truth, and having buried prematurely many smokers.

That doesn't prove anything about wifi I know. It should just make thinkers think, and maybe invite questions, scepticism, and investigation.

        • +5

@skysurfer: there’s a difference between having an open mind and a garbage bin head full of confirmation bias.

        • @urbancartel: Probably because he has made a claim, and not presented any evidence.
The days of believing things for bad reasons is coming to an end.

  • I'm not too sure what appliances I'd use this on. What does everyone else use it for?

    • I'm thinking of getting one for my TV/DVD etc as it's just on standby for no reason 95% of the week.

      • +3

Isn't standby power peanuts? Like a few dollars a year for a tv

        • +1

It'll pay for itself in only 6 short years!

        • @NoDiggerty:
Return of Investment. Haha. i like that

    • +2

I use it for Floor lamps, table lamps, TV, AV receiver.
Google home/Alexa can then control them with voice.
Turn it on and play music, netflix etc via chromecast etc.
Scheduled on-off lights and so on….
Remote access means you can control from anywhere..

      • you mention TV, when you press on, is the TV automatically on or you still need the remote to turn it on?

        • I have a Hisense and a samsung. Both turn on.

        • Can probably use IFTTT to do this in sequence - Turn on wall plug, cast media to Chromecast-enabled TV

        • @ltwo:
          Yes you can.

        • @Bippz01:

How does google home turn on a Hisense tv?

          Thanks.

        • @Eeples: chromecast and a hdmi-cec port in said tv

        • @fratzhaus:

          Mmmmm.

But I use the hdmi arc for my sound bar.

So, I am out of luck.

        • @Eeples: cec is not arc, all your ports may have it! Check your manual or your settings!

        • @fratzhaus:

          Oh okay, thanks.

They're great for monitoring washing machines when partnered with HomeAssistant (although they need to be rejiggered a little before they will work with HA). Essentially you can setup rules based on power consumption. When power consumption reaches a certain threshold, the washing machine must be running. When it's finished the level drops below another threshold and HA can alert you that your washing is finished.

      • +2

        Great idea!
What rejigging do you need to do? I've installed an updated switch script into HA to see the consumption. What else is required?

        • Well the new firmware wasn't working with HA. I'm not running the latest HASSIO update, so that may have changed.

I ended up posting a dodgy workaround on the HomeAssistant forums. That's the "rejiggering" I was referring to.

          https://community.home-assistant.io/t/tplink-hs110-smart-plu…

        • @mattyman: Yeah you could jam the old code back in and edit the values, but a new release closed that off. There was a user posting here that had version 1 firmware on units they got from MSY. As far as I know all other sellers had the later incompatible firmware.

      • +1

Awesome idea will try on dish washer instead.
Need to open the compartment door for air dry when it's done

      • +1

HS100 does not do power consumption. Need HS110 for that.

I do the washing machine trick with HA and a Wemo. TTS to Google Home when washing is done.

EDIT. Bugger. Saw HS110 was also on sale….. I was going to buy two!

        • Ah my bad. I misread the title.

      • Genuine question, what use is this? We always know what household appliances are running. We know when our power usage is high or low. So let's say we had solar (we're thinking about it) we'd know to run devices during peak sun anyway.

In the case of the washing machine in particular, automating it doesn't include putting clothes/powder in it, doesn't consider whether you're home to hang it out before it gets stinky, nor consider whether the weather is warm for drying it.

I understand using these to turn a heater on before you get home, or air-con, but I really don't understand what else they are good for. I'd like to know, because I'd like to cut our power usage, but I just don't understand how these would realistically help.

        • I wpuld normally boil water during high input of solar, but you need it when you are not home, so that you can turn it on remotely when the solar input is high.

        • You can use it to send a notification to your phone to let you know that the cycle is complete and then switch off the stand by power?

    • +1

coffee machine needs time to warm up - i turn it on with my phone while in bed, or can even set a schedule on/off

  • Gonna give it a go! Cheers OP

  • +1

Got one to remotely manage my 3d printer. Thanks

  • Got one of each. Need only one. Oh well…..

    Thanks OP.

    • Trev likes bargains!!!!!!!!!
      Who doesnt like bargains.

      Cheers Mate.

  • Can we share the plug with other uses like we do in Mi Home app? So they can also control it?

    • Not sure.
But it is linked your email id and needs login on device. So possibly can share.

    • You can have a single login and someone else can use the same app login.

  • +1

You can get quality Chinese branded ones for $8-12 Ill have to dig em up somewhere

    • +6

Lets not start the Australian Standard and House fire debate …………..

But this thing is pretty robust and well made.

      • +1

my TPlink smart plug just broke after 1 month. Not that robust from my experience

        • When you say broke, what exactly do you mean mate??

        • +1

          @Bippz01:

my wemo broke after less than a week.
My house didn't burn down though and Belkin replaced it.

        • @Bippz01:

I said, "Ok Google, Turn on the lamp" and she said "Error…something something". I thought, that's weird. So I reached over to the lamp which i was sitting next to and had a look at the smart plug. No lights on but I wasn't sure if the lights are usually on during operation. So I pressed both buttons and held in the buttons and tried all that stuff. No response.

I then tried it in another socket and got nothing. No response. The thing is done mate, cooked, bye bye.

I need to take it back to the shop and Im sure Ill get a refund. Still annoying but.

  • Thanks OP, got one on special from Amazon the other week, hard not to get another at $24!

    • +1

$24 is indeed a sweet deal.
      Cheers.

  • $20 delivery for non eBay plus members?!?!

    • Thats been the trend since introduction of Ebay Plus.
All deliveries seem to be $19 or $29.

  • Nice, got one for my room heater

    • Nice, you can always be sure that you turned it off. Even when at work.
And turn it on 30 minutes prior to use.
      Cheers.

  • Cheaper than the other day when I bought 2 with the 15% off. Good price.

    • EBAY PLUS returns…

      • +1

Haha true, but the ~$4 saved isn’t worth the stuffing around having to return it 😂😂

  • +1

Why not Sonoff S20, $14 at Ebay?

    • Sonoff has had a few Quality control issues especially with pairing.
      Also not meeting Australian Standards.

Having said that they get the job done.

    • +1

Max load on sonoff plugs is around 2200watts. You'll blow it with a 2400w heater or air con. Even a 2200w heater will draw more power at start up. hs110's are rated to something like 3680watts…

      • +1

You just shot the Sonoff @wolfshooter

  • Shame it doesn't work with HomeKit :(

  • Silly question, but I have always wondered if you can plug a powerboard into this so you can turn off stuff en masse………..or would you need to plug several of these into powerboards instead (i.e. 1 per device)?

    • +1

I have a Belkin powerboard connected to it with TV, Blu-ray 5.1 system, Chromecast Ultra, Apple TV, Yee-Light strip and Optus fetch.
All up and running in single command.

      Cheers,

  • +1

I need a switch type of this product to replace my dumb switch for the solar/electric hot water system. Ideas?

  • Bugger, wanted to try an HS110, sold out..

Can anyone comment on the accuracy of the power meter side of it, especially at low wattage?

    • +1

In case anyone else was wondering too, just tried one and seems pretty good at low wattages, measuring 0.xx on standby devices (hopefully accurate)
Does a better job than my Jaycar one anyway, which says 9W+ on standby when I know it can't be.

  • I just discovered that you can get TWO of the HS100 units for $35.07. That's $17.53 each! Bargain!!

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/387329

Hopefully the listing is not an error.

    • Was an error!

  • interested to Know More about these ?

    • ??

  • I ended up grabbing an HS110 from Officeworks for $38, price beat on MSY

I'd love to automate with this to stop non-essential high draw appliances during those days when the solar output drops or another appliance comes on pushing it over the current solar output. Hopefully can work something out in HA.

    • Thanks! Was going to buy them from OW. Didn't think to check MSY. For $2, Will just go to them.

    • Better of with a different product for HA.

      • What do you recommend that also has power monitoring?
