+1 for using a car broker. I spoke to a few last year when buying a car, some where good, others could barely be bothered talking to me. The 2 which I found most helpful were private fleet (see above, maybe not so good now), and online car brokers.
The guy at online car brokers took a fair bit of time talking to me, but I ended buying a used (1yr old) corolla at pickles.

Would suggest going a new car broker like Privatefleet. They'll be able to get you fleet discounts you normally can't access. There must be others around, but am mentioning private fleet as a friend went through them, and managed to get $3K off after he thought he had negotiated a good deal.
EDIT: Recent reviews of Private Fleet don't seem to be too good…
