Good and Budget 4K (display) Laptop?

Hi Guys.

Was looking to buy a 4k laptop and was wondering if this dell 15 7000 would be a good option: https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/inspiron-15-700… at $1679

Anybody owns this one? or can someone recommend one?

Thanks in advance!

What's the reason you need/want a 4K display? Because 4K on a 15-inch display isn't usually going to have that noticeable a difference.

    • Mainly movies, netflix and light gaming

      • Ok. At this price (which l005e drew my attention to), it seems like a good bargain already but have you gone in store and looked at a 1080p vs 4K on a 15-inch display? Just make sure you can notice at least a difference. But otherwise at this price, yeah might as well get 4K.

  • Wow that seems like a good price. I was just in JB and HN looking for a 15' 4k laptop for the wife and they are all around 3k

    • Whoa, ok that is a good price.

YES! and also a touch 4k! Just want to get some advice before I splash the cash!

        • Not from personal experience, but I have heard that Inspirons don't have the best build quality. Of course, it's Dell which has top-notch warranty and support so maybe it evens out, and if you're not using for professional/essential functions, it's not as big a potential issue.

        • @HighAndDry: Agreed, in the past Inspirons have had a bad rep for being Dell's consumer grade plastic wonder. But they've invested in better parts and the most recent ones, especially their gaming range, are actually pretty good - not business grade, but good for the price

If you do get the inspiron i advise you to also get the 3 years extended warranty.

All I can say is, good luck gaming with a GeForce® MX130 on a 4k display. Id recommend getting a better spec laptop rather than going for a 4k display. On a 15 to 17 inch laptop you wont even notice the difference with the pixel density.

Resolution has diminishing benefits the smaller the display gets. Most people probably wouldn't even the difference watching a 4K movie on a 15" screen. If you are mostly using it for movies I would personally go bigger (17"+) than higher resolution.

    • what about 2k 6" phone

      • Higher resolutions might be worthwhile if you regularly view your phone a few inches from your face, since it is more beneficial as you get closer. Though I'd rather have a 6" 2K AMOLED than a 6" 4K LCD personally.

  • Appreciate your response guys! I will do visit JB and check the difference between FHD & 4K.

    • On the those Dells, 4K does touch. FHD does not. If that’s important

The 4K screens have much better colour, contrast, brightness, response times and more.

When it comes to the Dell laptops there's many screens - but the 1080p IPS LCD that comes with the Inspiron is very average. Have a look at notebookcheck.com for their reviews on the LCD panels used in these laptops for confirmation.

Can compare the stats between the LGD053F (1080p IPS Inspiron) and LGD04D9 (4K IPS Inspiron) LCD panels that are available on the Inspiron in the below links:

The 1080p IPS screen used in the XPS line is very good (a lot better than the Inspiron one) but it's not as good as the 4K screen which covers significantly more colour gamut. The Vostro lines have been confirmed to have the 1080p IPS that is in the Inspiron and not the XPS line:

It doesn't matter what GPU you have, you can game at 1080p on a 4K screen and in the case of Dell, it will look so much nicer on the 4K Inspiron screen than the 1080p Inspiron. You won't notice as much ghosting, will notice the increase in brightness/contrast and the colours will make you think a unicorn vomited a colour spectrum that you didn't know existed all over the screen (well maybe not the last part).
