I would like to drive uber with hired car? What can it go wrong?

Hi guys,
I would like to drive uber with hired car. Uber has partner with car hired companies to provide drivers who do now own cars. I have full Victorian driving license. I am planning of driving from morning to afternoon(Monday to Friday). Do you think that I will be able to make some profit? or I will be working for ATO, uber and hired car company for free? Let me know what you think. I have a job at restaurant at night but I would like to work the hours that I am free during the day. Any comments will be appreciated.

I doubt you'd make any profit, from what I know Uber drivers would be lucky to net $10 an hour after paying for their car maintenance, and I think a hire car plus insurance would cost more than maintaining a car you own (otherwise lots of people would use hire cars instead of owning their car)

I haven't done any maths though so I could be wrong.

    • Thanks for your comment. I have a part time job that I earned about $850 a week (Thursday Night, Friday Night, Saturday night and Sunday night). I am trying to make extra income during the day so I will take any income regardless of $10 for an hour to start. However, looking at other's comment weekend nights are the main source for uber income. Keep in mind that I won't have to worry about maintenance as the car is hired.

      • It's $10/hour if you own your car, might less or negative if you hire (since hiring would cost more than maintaining a car I am guessing).

This information will be of only limited use to you specifically, but I have third-hand information of a person using Splend hire-cars full-time with Uber in Sydney.

    (1) He doesn't bother working Monday or Tuesday but works (is switched on and ready) every other day for more than 8 hours a day. Apparently after all expenses he was probably making above minimum wage (Him:"My mate makes something like 2k a week!" Me: "After fuel and hire costs?" Him: "Ah, no, before.".
    (2) He failed in the beginning until Uber told him to concentrate on Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.
    (3) He says that a huge chunk of his money comes from Friday and Saturday nights.

Since Friday and Saturday are the busiest nights at restaurants as well and they might not let you off on those nights, your earnings-to-expenses ratio won't be as pretty.

    • Thanks for your comment. I will be focusing on Melbourne CBD area and airport if I do drive Uber. I have weekly income of $850 and I do work on the days that uber also makes money. If u don'd mind, I would like to know more about hired car. I would like to do something during the day where I do not have work so any income more than hired car cost is a win for me to start of course. Where I am not very familiar with Uber.

      • Sorry but just to clarify, this was a friend of a friend so I have no firsthand experience. A long time ago some people on OzBargain reviewed Splend though: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/230707

However, since you're 24 you may be ineligible for another year anyway.

I did exactly this for a month before when I had to use up some annual leave at work. I worked a few hours in the morning 7-10am and a few hours in the afternoon 3-7pm with about 10 hours overnight on Friday and Saturday 6pm-4am. The Friday and Saturday nights would be around 60% of the total earnings for the week. After expenses (car, fuel, GST) I would make around $900 per week. This was in Brisbane and renting an Infinity Q50 for $400 per week which could do Uber Select jobs.

I don't know what it's like in Victoria but in QLD it's a bit of a hassle to get started. You need a medical check, police check, taxi driver license, booked hire license for car, etc. that can take weeks to get done and costs about $500 in total. The rental car company I used (Atlas) has a 4 week minimum rental period and required 4 weeks notice to end the agreement so it's a bit of a commitment.

    • thanks for your comment. I do not think I will need taxi driver license to start in Victoria. I would like to try it out for about one or two months based on whatever minimum term of car hired agreement and see it would be worth it or not. I do have a part time job with income of $850 a week so anything over car hired costs will be a win for me.

      • You need to have the right accreditation from TSC now in order to drive Uber as well. I think by law you need it before 1st of July.

    What can it go wrong?

    Many wrong could go things

Infact there's very little that could go right.

    • I know hired car is a total pain in the ass when it comes to accidents etc. That is the only thing that makes me think of again and again to drive uber

  • Invest your hours during the day to find better employment?

    • thanks for your comment. I have already thought about that. I like driving so driving uber won't be considered as a job at least for me. I have a part time job on the weekend and I don't want another person who tells me how to do the job during the day. However, I am still looking for a job during the day,

  • Take the extra insurance to lower the excess

    • yeh it would be a must and I am 24 y/o. I dont really want to deal with insurance companies so I would be buying the most to lower the excess if I do get a hired car

      • Except that would cut further into your slim margins. Driving for Uber is already a risky proposition. Add in the extra hassle, risks, and cost of using a hire car and I wouldn't even consider it to be honest.

        • I totally agree bro that is one of the reasons I am not doing it right now

  • How would you be able to prove, and have access to the vehicle's inspection record?

The rental car company provides it as they are specifically renting it for the purpose of Uber driving.

      • No shit?
Interesting… Way to be responsible for me learning something today :D
