Double check your info - At no point in the product description or peoples' review does it say that it works with 'direction'. If anything it pointedly avoids talking about that feature. Considering it is a static LED based display, you can't use Waze or other HUD apps to combine with either.

I copied the info from their manual, looks like its been a poor cut and paste between the two different systems, as provided by Kogan.

I removed the direction feature from the ODBII unit description, as well as satellite number and altitude. Things your car computer doesnt know, unless newer OBDII cars have these features - maybe they do.

Obviously maybe others might have more insight.

If you check the description on the site, you can find the Manuals for each unit where there is that info,. I had thought that would be better to use than their webbsite specs, guess not!! 😀

A heads up unit that's not connected to the OBDII port is (imo) useless. The OBDII port gives data that's as accurate as your car's speedometer (i.e. very accurate). A GPS unit's data is… not. If I have a HUD - I'd want it to be accurate.

    • You're saying that a cars speedometer is more accurate than GPS?

      • More accurate than GPS under perfect conditions? No.

More accurate (and more importantly more reliable) than GPS considering that you don't always have a perfect GPS signal? Yes.

        • Thats a good point, at least discussion here will help decide which of the two units would be better. (if at all)

I guess its a moot point if your car is older than the ODBII requirements.

        • @RockyRaccoon: 1972 Mercedes Convertible still in Miles on the speedo? Shame I don't have a working lighter socket, otherwise I'd jump on it.

You couldn't be more incorrect. Most cars speedo's read artifically high on purpose. Everytime I rent a car (which I do often for work) I immediately use an app on my phone to check the cars speedo versus GPS, and typically find they read about 10% faster than the TRUE GPS speed.

That's with cars that are mostly new on factory-provided tyres. Swap different tyres on (which vary in dimension from manufacturer to manufacturer) when those inevitably wear out, and you are now adding another variable. Oh, and what about tyre inflation?

OBD II is good for info such as revs, error codes, etc.. but worthless for determining your true speed. Quite good if you want to be safely and consistantly under the already ridiculously low limits in this country, however…

      • I'm actually aware that your car deliberately overstates your speed, I just didn't want to write a thesis on it, because:

Quite good if you want to be safely and consistantly under the already ridiculously low limits in this country, however…

This is really the only reason I check my speedo anyway.

    • Leaving aside accuracy, I imagine OBDII has no startup lag for signal acquisition, a faster response time when starting and stopping, and also has no issue with tunnels. Those reasons alone would be worth going for the OBDII version IMO

      • +1

Great point - it will be just as inaccurate in a tunnel and when it first starts as it will during the other 99.9% of the time you use it.

The OBDII one is great. I've got the same one in my car. You can adjust it to compensate for the factory inaccuracy in the speedo (most usually read 5-10% under speed).

The GPS one is a bit crap because you lose reception in tunnels, but it's compatible with pretty much every car on the market.

I have seen this posted here a few times and I was close to pull the trigger. I am scare this is one of those things where it is FUN at the start and become a MEH.. after a few weeks. Also for those people who has this, do you have it permanently mount on the dashboard or you take it in and out? I worry it is another thing which might attract thief to break into my car. Also how well it handle the Australia sun during the summer. Love to hear some feedback.

  • Only $10 more on eBay for an identical model…
50% off would seem to be as deceptive as it usually is
