Looks like a good deal if you have a small place and a hard drive handy. The one about a month back for the 8 cameras and hard drive was obviously better value at $499.
These units don't record to external HD's.

The IP cameras give you more options for cabling, especially if your house is already wired for data.
These are only 2MP cameras so won't give you great pics, but the price is reflecting that.
You'd be better off with the one in the deal referenced by @ricodbn. Think that had 4mp cameras. (I have that recorder but with 3mp cameras - happy with the quality)
These 2mp give a great image. Just beware of recording times. Advertise up to a year on a 1TB but on full HD at full recording you are lucky to get a week.
