  • I'm no good with electronics, how does one go about with its installation? How much would it cost in Mel? Also, can the cameras be viewed remotely?

I'm not a 100% certain but I believe you are given extension wires in the box. You connect these to the camera and route the wires under the roof of your house to a central location. Then connect everything to your DVR. Then you connect the DVR to the internet via Ethernet cable. Then you use the Swann App to remotely view your cameras.

I picked up the Aldi 8 Camera Security System for $149 yesterday and was just testing how it worked. I would probably get an electrician to install it anyway. Not sure about the costs though.

I am actually considering returning the Aldi Security System and buying this. But I do have a large house so 8 cameras is probably better even if the resolution is only 720p. Also the Aldi one comes with 1TB HDD, not sure why this only comes with 32GB. But then again, Swann is probably more reliable than Aldi's "Cocoon" security system.

I have the aldi system too. Just finished testing it if you want to swap notes.
For the record I found the aldi system to be very stable. I trust it over this, which looks gimicky

If you plan to keep it, you should pickup a license for the WinX HD video converter. Out of all the software I tried it was the first one to be able to turn the .dat files to .avi. This is only important if you plan to be taking the HDD out of the unit

        • Well if it is stable, I guess I will just keep the Aldi one. I tested one camera and the quality was pretty good. It has decent reviews online as well, so it should be ok. And I also picked up the WinX HD video converter as well, I knew it would come into use for something, just didn't know it would be for my security system.

@Rosrav - Just as advice they are DIY'able, If you approach a electrician to install them they can, however you'd be looking at $500+ for install costs.

I got the Aldi system recently too.
It is very good and impressive quality even at only 720p.

The mobile app works well and the unit itself is very easy to setup and install.

Wiring is not hard to do as long as you don't mind crawling in the roof

      • Is the $149 system from Aldi a currently active deal? I might check it out tomorrow if it is..

        • No it was clearance stock.
I think it went on sale for $299 in March and I picked up the last one at my local store a few weeks ago for $149

      • "Swann is probably more reliable than Aldi's "Cocoon" security system".

Just my 2c: that's not my experience in the past few Swann systems I've owned at all. I think at this price point you accept you may have to start throwing bits of the system out after a few years no matter what the brand (I've has two DVRs fail after a year or so - the cameras last a little longer). You get what you pay for and $200 isn't paying a lot lol.

If you make sure you get ONVIF compatible equipment at least you can replace stuff.

Personally, I've taken a small step up due to the issues I've had into the next price bracket (HIKVision and equivalent but even looking at the new zoomable Ubiquiti). I can't go back.

You may get luckier but it's pretty much all rebadged low end Chinese stuff In think.

      • @rosrav

From which store did you get the Aldi ones from? I thought these were out of stock.

        • Cranbourne East. There is no more stock there though.

        • @rosrav
          thanks :)

  • BNC cables..

  • 32gb micro sd, 1080p, 4 channels, that barely one hour of footage.

Can this paired with 1tb hard drive?

    • Swann’s True Detect technology drastically reduces the need for storage due to fewer but highly relevant recordings. The 32GB Micro SD card lowers the cost to you while giving you the flexibility to upgrade to any Micro SD card up to 128GB or add an external HDD up to 4TB to suit your needs.

      • Nice, will visit a HN to check it out.

Are these any good for capturing some bedroom action?

    • +11

They're thermal, so only if it's hot.

    • +6

Yes, and the 32gb storage will be enough to capture the 3 seconds.

        so 1 pump & done ?

It's PIR + Optical .. how is this a thermal camera?

    • It is, in the magical marketing world of 'Delusion'

For those that prefer JB Hi-Fi, they have it at $199 too.

  • +1

    Shows $449 for me. Expired?

    • Looks like it. The product link above for it at JB Hi Fi has also gone back to the original price.

    • Which is higher than the RRP, Swann itself sells it for less
