  • Does it have a warranty?

    • Snap!

This was going to be my question but Ive been pipped at the post

      • It does say 2 years.

  • +3

I prefer the larger size, but these are incredible. So easy to use, saves me heaps of time :)

    • Do you have a link on hand?

      • +1

I have the older, larger one with a digital screen and it gets used daily. In the past 3 years since I've had it, I've saved myself countless liters of oil for deep frying. Great to heat up frozen pies, hot dogs, chicken wings, love my Philips and hasn't skipped a beat.

        • +1

How do cook frozen pie? I always end up dry on the outside cold in inside. I have a Philips turbo star btw.

        • @worldpc:defrost in microwave for a few minutes maybe.

        • @Skinnerr: can't do it all the way like in the oven? Was hope for the same result.

        • @worldpc: You need to set the temp a bit lower and cook longer. 180 degrees and around 25 minutes should do it.

        • @wombat1955:
          Thanks, will give a try.

        • +1

          @worldpc:

Microwave it for a few minutes like till it's soft while preheating the air fryer using highest settings. Air fry it for 8 minutes.

    • Completely agree! For me, the best part is that they work unsupervised (unlike normal cooking), so I can just set it up, then go watch TV or do some work and it'll be done when I come back.

  • +1

Highly recommend - does great chips and OMG the steak - crispy outside, juicy inside. Yum.

    • +1

STEAK?! This I need to try

      • +1

        wow definitely!!

    • +1

Interesting.. What temp setting and how long?

      • I never actually change the temp - I'm sure there's probably a way to tweak it so it doesn't overcook it, but I've just had it on the highest setting for all the years I've owned it.

As for time, depends on the thickness, really. No longer than 15 minutes in my experience.

  • +1

Does this one have the removable basket base?

The older one has this basket that is a PITA to clean in between the edges:

    https://cdn.thewirecutter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/air…

The newer one apparently has a removable basket base which makes it a tonne easier

    • +1

As an owner of the old one, I agree it was a headache. My new one has the removable tray which is significantly easier to clean…

My challenge is if you don't clean the basket assembly regularly, it becomes really difficult to clean especially if oils have dripped down :(

      • There are so many different variants now, and the pics are all standard view from the outside - not close up of the tray. Seems a trip to a Brick and Mortar store to scout specific model numbers

    • NOt sure what metal your one is made out of, but for all wire mesh cookware I use (for blanching noodles and meats to make asian food) I clean it by burning it all off on my biggest burner. I would only do this with caked on food or oil gunk though. With lighter oil you can use a degreaser or hot water + detergent.

  • What do you use this thing for? Home made chips?

    • Yeah interested to know too.

      • +3

heating up frozen fast food like chicken burgers, chicken strips, frozen pie, steaks (as read above), cold fried chicken and dry leftovers like pizza and old chips. Basically it's a fan forced oven but much more efficient.

Especially in a household with kids, it's so easy just to pop these in and press a button and not have to deal with pans, oils, and fire danger.

  • Another +1 recommendation. Had the Philips XL model for a while and it's saved me heaps of time.

I followed the chocolate lava cake recipe from the Airfryer app and it turned out perfectly gooey on the inside whereas I was getting inconsistent results from my oven.

  • would donuts and arancini balls work in this? i doubt it..

    • +1

I've had arancini balls in it, and it definitely works.

  • +1

Is it a glorified oven? I'm not familiar with these air fryer things.

    • +2

Air fryer (good quality ones), can generally substitute your conventional oven for daily cooking/roasting of food. If you want to bake big cakes or a large bird, then you still need the conventional oven. For everything else, like chips, roast pork, fish etc. air fryer is the way to go. Easy, fast and hassle free cleaning after that compared to the big oven. try the cheap Kmart one at $69 and you won't go back to conventional oven!

      • just looking at videos it seems like you need to pre boil things like potato wedges to ensure they are soft in the middle?

Wouldn't baking them just be easier and faster?

        • +1

Yes you are right, but that's only for those raw potatoes. You need to soak in water to remove the starch. For those packed frozen packed potato wedges/fries, you can just put them into the air fryer direct, sprinkle some oil and start. If you want to ensure evenness of the cooling, just take them out in between cooking to stir the fries a bit and continue cooking. I have the same problem with conventional oven where I will stir the fries in between heating to ensure even cooking and making them more crispy.

        • @beetlebum: Thanks for your replies :)

        • @beetlebum:

Have you tried beer batter fries in yours?

I don't have one of these but only interested in making crispy fries with it

        • +2

          @montorola:
McCain's Chunky Beer Batter chips + 10 minutes in the Philips Air Fryer on the highest setting, are the bomb.

        • +1

@montorola: Aldi beer batter fries are really good in this actually all chips are except KFC for some reason but it's great for KFC Chicken bring it home and put it in the airfryer for a couple of minutes only way to eat it

    • Yes.. Just a convection cooker like an easy cook. But the container makes it great.

  • +3

Philips are the original air fryer king, and they are of quality products. I have used the more current digital version, and the cooking is amazing, and quality materials used, so they should last quite long.

Just a side note, I also own the Kmart air fryer which cost $69. Between the 2, I feel the Kmart's provide more value for money, as the quality is also comparable, and it does have digital display and presets, which is better than the manual dials of the older Philips air fryer. So for price wise value, Kmart offers a bargain, as I can buy 4 - 5 of them compared to 1 for the higher end Philips. It's hard to come by though for stocks of the Kmart air fryer as they are always sold out.

    • This Phillip air fryer (800g) is smaller than the Kmart one $69 3.2 litres capacity?

    • Just grabed a Kmart one. It is showing in stock in Brandon Park, Burwood, Richmond and Rowville. 😬

      • Just checked now, only Rowville store shows "selling fast" all the other stores are out of stock…. amazing..
Is the basket in Kmart one also dishwasher safe?

      • I can't find stock of this anywhere in Brisbane :(

        • +1

Thanks guys. Was looking for one and didn't even know Kmart sells it!
I've just got it posted for $10 postage - only $7 difference from click & collect (which costs $3).

    • Agreed to what you said and just bought one from Kmart online. Thanks beetlebum :)

  • agreed we eat many chicken wings and fried food but does it come out too dry? ie like an oven
or does it taste like fried?

    • It depends on the make of the air fryer. Some knock off brands do make the food too dry from what I read. Philips and the Kmart ones (these are what I have used), give you pretty good even cooking, as long as you know how to preset the time and temperature, and maybe add a little sprinkle of oil should do the trick.

  • +1

Bit OT…the $69 Kmart air fryer is brilliant (if you can find one).

  • +11

Lol good work OP promotes Philips and everyone goes to buy Kmart Air Fryer lol

  • This thing is a beast with chicken wings and pork belly. Got this a while back when TGG had a sale that coincided with a cashback, and it was only regrettable I did not purchase the XL.

You can do some amazing stuff with it.

For those on the fence, do it. JUST DO IT!

  • I wonder how small this is compared to the XL.

    • +1

Too small in my opinion. I have the XL version, which fits a lot more for cooking for 2 - 3 person meal nicely. The small version I think you need to cook a few times depending on what food size you want to put in. For the XL, I can put in my a lot of chicken/pork meat and sausages and cook them at once. but then again, the XL costs a lot more. So value wise, not worth it I feel.

  • Does this make chips taste differently to oven baked? I don’t see how.

    • +1

I don't think the taste is hugely noticeable different. Just made it easier to pop in and out for cooking for air fryer, and no headaches for cleaning compared to the oven.

Not surer about electricity bill though, which one is more efficient. Anyone has compared their bills between using air fryer and oven?

      • +1

I haven't done a proper comparison, however just looking at my half hourly usage stats on MyHomeEnergy shows that I use less with the air fryer compared to when I have the oven on.

That may partly be to do with not having to pre-heat like I would with the oven and also shorter cooking times.
(I don't know the power rating of my oven, but the XL air fryer model I have is 1425W).

        • I believe ovens can use anywhere between 1000W to 5000W. I can definitely see spikes in our electricity bill/usage when we use the oven a lot (even with solar power).

    • +4

I think it's better than oven baked because similar to a deep fryer, you can shake it easily to get the heat moving throughout. You also don't need to have all the chips lying against a tray in one direction (face up) and rotate them manually. If you like crispy chips, you can do it really well with the air fryer.

Extra tip- overnight KFC chips (and chicken) comes out brilliant in an air fryer.

      • +1 for the kfc tip

      • +1

The frozen wedges you get at Colesworth turns out better than chips in my opinion. When I first got the airfryer, I did a batch of wedges nightly…Now I'm fat.

  • +5

Why would I want to fry air?

    • +1

Upvote cause I was gonna make the same lame joke but now you've saved me the embarrassment.

  • +1

    Best investment ever!

  • Can you cook whole chicken in it?

  • Just bought one. Hoping to do roast vegies and chips, if it can do more bonus.

Not sure if it's big enough to do meals for 3 people, eg 3 pieces of fish, but even for sides it will get some good use, esp this time of year.

I should prob add our regular oven has been on it's last legs for about 10 years.

  • I have a tefal one had it new from years back lol and only just started using it no long ago instead of the ones you fill with oil and what a. waste it lasted 6 month and stopped working obviously as it was a gift from year ago obviously could not do anything in regards to warranty.
So been on the look out for a replacement would the Kmart one be a good buy much cheaper than this deal and bigger I believe also.
Anyone own a the Kmart one or even this one and what's your thoughts,I tend to think Kmart stuff don't last but they do sometimes have good products that are just as good more expensive brands.

  • +1

Got this. Use your it about 4x a day.
If u dont have an airfryer, your missing out.
Might as well get one now, so in a couple years when u get one. U wont think "wow i should have got one years ago"

  • +1

Any links to a larger one (3 kids…) also explains the lack of time to look myself. Lame.

    • same here scperfume 6 of us in the house.. i need an XL or nothing

  • Thanks! I got one hope to actually use it now :)

  • 301 sold in 24 hours. Do they keep that many of these in stock?

  • Hopefully this information is useful to someone.
    https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2018/03/…

  • I thought this was the Google Home from the thumbnail :D

  • Okay I'll get game and try one I use a convection microwave so I'll see if this is better

  • Can anyone comment on the one being sold by KOGAN (3.2L Digital Low Fat 1400W Air Fryer), seems quite similar to the Kmart product specs and the reviews on their site are good.

  • +3

I bought the cheapest air fryer Kogan had for $59 a few weeks ago. Could only switch it on once as the safety mechanism was broken. They shipped a replacement. That only worked 5 times. It seemed to overheat after 20 mins or so and switched off. Then it stopped working altogether.
Hats off to Kogan though for outstanding customer service, they are refunding me the money, I think they are a great company.

    • Sounds like you dodged a bullet… to the head.

  • +1

Hmm got the kmart one tonight after reading this thread… Fan seems rather noisy. Not air moving noise as such but sorta grindy :(

    • Return it and buy the Philips :)

  • Thanks OP for this post! I've been looking for an airfryer for a looong time… Never knew that Kmart sold them… Ordered one from Richmond store with $10 delivery… 😊😊😊

  • Is the Philips and Kmart one of the same size? Philips specs says 800g and Kmart lists as 3.2L.

  • FYI peeps of Brisbane, Kmart at certain locations have got the Air Fryer back in stock. Get in quick! The online stock locator for each store is in accurate (what an employee told me). They checked their system and told me which store to call that had stock. Don't ask me why they don't combine the two systems…

    • Thanks. So can i also opt for delivery ?
Ok, yep seems i can. Sweet
