  • The carrier also needs to activate wifi calling on your account. It's not as simple as getting a supported phone and turning it on in the settings.

    • First i tried to get amaysim to turn on wifi calling. And they cant understand why it wont but did state they offer wifi calling service.

Second, i called samsung support and they didnt understand why phone would not.

Three, went to samsung shop, where they told me i had American model phone, and stated different chip set to Australian models. That is why is wont work.

But find comment about chip set strange. Internet and calls work via mobile towers. My phone's internet works via home wifi. Just wifi calling wont.

Is there is a patch or software upgrade out there to enable wifi calling?

      Just looking for answers.

  • If your Carrier Amaysim does now allow VoWIFI/Wifi Calling then no matter what you change on your phone it is not going to work. Your only solution is to change carriers. All tier-1 teclos offer Wifi calling btw.

    • Do you know of any tier-1 carriers in Australia that offer wifi calling for all global carriers/chipset configurations?

  • WiFi calling is dependant on your phones CSC, which is the carrier portion of the phones firmware.
Australian S8 models are Exynos CPU, while US models are Snapdragon, it's pretty much impossible to get working since flashing the Exynos firmware would brick a Snapdragon device.

    • So you believe im screwed? No options?

Bit crummy of samsung. So if American purchasers move to Aust or Europe they need to by new phone for wifi calling? Thought we were in globle community. Haha. Thanks for your comments.

      • Blame US carriers and not Samsung, it's their monopolising and proprietary network standards that force phone models to differ in the US.

Feel like I've been sold second rate phone. Or that I'm living in darkages. Haha.

      • There's a reason Samsung Snapdragon models are cheaper than Exynos. Changing carrier isn't going to help for your S8, even if they operate in both Aus and US, their firmware package for Aus and US models will be different.

        • But cant you upgrade firmware? Cant understand why there isnt a patch of some sort.

Internet and phone work on towers. Internet works on wifi.

Thankyou for your help and advice. Looks like i need to invest in a mobile booster. Such is life.

        • @richie3000: The firmware that allows WiFi calling on Australian Telcos was only ever made for phones with the Exynos CPU in them - since they're the only S8 models officially sold in Australia by Samsung.
Your phone is Snapdragon, Aus Telcos would never develop a firmware package for the Snapdragon model because it was never officially sold in Australia, and they have no reason to develop for grey imports. You can't upgrade to a firmware that doesn't exist for your phone.
Custom firmware could work if the situation was different, but US model Samsung's have a locked bootloader preventing custom flashing, again the fault of US carriers.

        • Fully understand, but if Samsung dosent care when the end user is able to be cond by Aust retailers selling imports illegally, then only Samsung and the purchaser suffer.

Dodgy retailer dosent suffer, telco dosent suffer. Just me and Samsung.

My handset is unlocked to all Australian providers. Im sure samsung could write software patch if it was interested. After all, it only designed and manufactured it!!!

But all good, ill buy a mobile booster to fix black spot issues.

Interesting natural flow on effect is that the cheaper illegal mobile boosters slow down the network for every other user. Forcing people to change telco providers, thinking it is just telco providing bad service.

Haha, in the end we all suffer including the telco.

  • Where did you buy the phone and was it new ?

    • Just from a phone shop in Brisbane. Tried to take back but i put a small 1cm crack on screen. They wont take back now.

    • Yes was a brand new phone.

      • +1

So it was a grey import?

        • Starting to believe it is a grey import. People on this forum say phone is not configured for Aust market. Samsung say it is American phone.

But Samsung dont seem to give a f*#k about the sale of incorrectly configured products in Aust by retailers operating out of major shopping (westfield) centers.

Have spoken to Samsung 3 times and they have never once asked where i purchased phone from. Funny and annoying at same time.

        • Just put it down as $850 training and education into the phone industry. And report retailer to Government Org.

Understand phhone was cheaper than Telstra, but assumed it was smaller retailer with lower overheads offering better deal. Not like i bought from undercounter market store or via FB market place.

Bit slack of Samsung to not care about unlicensed retailers selling their product in Aust, but such is life.

All good, ill just buy a mobile booster for house.

Thanks for your interest in my post.
