“ dad why are are you spending my inheritance on le creuset“
“i’m not son, i’m investing in le creuset as heirlooms to hand down to you instead”.

    • excuse my ignorance but do people genuinely leave these sorta thing as inheritance for their kids/grand kids?

      • +1

        Yes

        • +1

Thanks…but i think i would rather inherit a house in Sydney instead lol

      • What the OP is saying is that they last so long that you can hand them down to your kids

  • What one should I buy to cook 500g mince

    • Mince is Le Creuset? Surely you jest!

    • +18

Just use the ‘public’ park bbq

      • real ozbargainer

    • trick with mince is browning in small batches so that it doesn't "stew" …otherwise you need to keep on heating till liquid evaporates before temp is hot enough to brown.

      • Or just scoop up the water and fat.

How much of an upgrade are these on a more budget option like Lodge?

the enamel seems like it'd be easier to keep rust off in a tropical environment?

    • +2

I have both, prefer using the ones without enamel. If you season and maintain the cast iron correctly the tropical environment will be of no issue.

Despite their claims the enamel does wear down and the non-stick factor is better with a well seasoned pan.

    • +2

the enamel means you can do acidic foods such tomatoes, etc which can sometimes loosen the seasoning on straight cast iron and you get little black bits in your sauce.

Not an issue with the enamelled.

Question should be how much of an upgrade are le creuset over Chasseur (French) or the Aldi ones (China).

I have found you will end with more than one type of pan (non-stick, stainless, steel/cast), trick is not to end up with too many different sizes and types.

      • Does the fact that it is enamelled mean it does not require maintenance?

    • +1

The main difference in my experience is you can't do high heat on the le creuset (and most other enameled) versions - high heat will destroy the non stick coating. They're better at medium heat but will hold the heat. Seasoned cast iron can heat up much higher without risking damage to the surface.

  • +1

    Skillet's only 20cm? Damn it. Need a 26cm one.

    • +6

      buy 2.

      • +6

        Then I'd have 40cm. That's too much.

  • -1

Meh. Other brands of cast iron cookware cost a third of this. Apple / Dyson / Le Creuset - you're just paying for a brand. I get that Ozbargain isn't necessarily about frugality but this kinda thing just isn't a bargain.

    • +1

some shape / size pieces you can get from Chasseur or aldi e.g normal pan, casserole, some are Creuset only eg fajita pans, some of the grill pan shapes and sizes, etc or handle types wooden so cant burn fingers vs metal so need to use glove.

I own a mixture of Creuset, Aldi and Chasseur, my dislikes are colour … aldi have limited / ugly colours sometimes ….

all cook the same once on the heat.

      • That's what I meant. A $1000 pot doesn't cook 100x better than a $10 pot.

    • Just because you don't like the Brand. Doesn't mean it's a not a good deal for people who want/need it. I have a couple of these and I also bought the cheap ones from aldi over the weekend. I don't regret buying both.

      • I don't like or dislike any of these brands. I dislike spending double on something that performs the same function.

    • +2

you're tripping if you compare Le Creuset's solid build quality and pass-on value to Dyson's cheap plastic.

  • Staub are also worth looking at when they are on special. I have both Creuset and staub and prefer the staub one.

    • Which they are at the moment as part of the eBay 20% off sales through Peter's of Kensington or Kitchen Warehouse (around $260 for a 26cm).

Not as cheap as they have been at Costco in the past, but when I was at Costco last week they told me they likely won't be getting it back in stock.

    • mixed reviews on the staub grill pan. i paid 150 for 2nd hand 26cm le creuset equiv from ebay. so price of 145 is ultra bargain

  • I've wanted one of those pumpkin casseroles for so long, but I don't use the ones I have now. 🤔

  • Bought the rectangle grill for $118 with 10% NAB cashback and 5% cashreward cashback. It's a steal.

  • +1

Just bought the 29cm oval casserole, don't forget to use AMAZON20 for $20 off first order

  • Any good prices on a big Lodge Cast Iron? The 13.25/15" would be good but so expensive :(

  • Ive had the Aldi cast iron 5lt pot for about 2 years and it replaced my Le Creuset and inherited Bessemer (circa 1960).
After research I found that the Le Creuset has 2 layers of enamel and the Aldi 4 which helps prevent chipping and cracking to base metal, they all are non stick to a degree but require lower heat as mentioned earlier.
I would love to stick with the Bessemer as it is totally non stick but the coating is disintegrating not bad after 50 years of daily use.
Personally I feel that Le Creuset has lost a lot of its appeal after being made in china.

    • +1

I'm pretty sure the only stuff made in China is the non cast iron stuff.

  • +1

So glad I decided not to buy Le Creuset and instead spend $120 on 6 of the Aldi ones that were out last weekend. Would have been over $1000 in Le Creuset.

    • Why do you need 6 of these?

  • Bought the Signature Cast Iron Square Grill 26CM Volcanic…. the deal was too good to resist!

  • Although i prefer Staub but still bought one due to the tempting price, Le Creuset is usually priced higher than Staub. So good price now!

  • Am I the only one getting only 30% off? Is there any promotion code that I'd need to enter? e.g. the rectangular is $165.99 for me..

    • You're not the only one - since I logged in last night I've also been seeing only 30% off, e.g. $131.99 on the skillet instead of $91.99 shown here

    • No coupon, but they've priced differently the colours and some of the low price ones are now out of stock I assume. There were at least 3 colours of the 20cm skillets yesterday
