is there an android one version coming too?

    • +1

Probably not Xiaomi makes money off data in MIUI and that's how they make money on such a value friendly flagship.

    • Another - that has Android + Play Store out-of-the-box - and a very slightly larger screen
is MI MAX or MI MAX 2 from same maker, much less cost (applies to old / replaced MI MAX),
if you can survive on a bit less RAM.

If speed isn't critical, consider "Redmi 5 Plus" recently ~$218 (shipped; AliExpress app, deal) - 6" FHD screen, 4GB RAM 64GB but only SD 625 - storage and variants

    amazing price

  • +11

    No band 28

    • +6

Also missing notification light and microSD card.

      • +13

        Also missing useful warranty.

      • +10

And 3.5mm jack missing as well

        • +16

          and missing cloaking feature.

          @altomic:

Super excited now! Can't wait for the Xiaomi Mi Tardis

        • @starbearer:
And missing a bit of the screen at the top.

edit: No USB 3.1 (only specced for slow'olde 2.0 !!)

      • +2

        Also missing headphone jack

      • it has LED notification light.

    • +3

      Also missing a design department

      • +4

Not true. They have "consultants" from another big manufacturer on their design team :-P.

    • Hong Kong variant might change that hopefully.

    • And?

  • +1

Did they copy Apple or did Apple copy them?

    • +11

you mean the notch? the essential phone is the first one introduced the notch.

      • What about the LG V10, with a second-screen on the top and a cut-out for the Webcam/Selfie …?

Or even older, the Samsung Continuum, which had the extra screen portion on the bottom, from 2010?

    • This notched android phone is the closest to the X

  • +4

Why the massive increase in size….5.2 was perfect!
I'm so gonna regret this comment

    • cos despite what they tell you…size matters!

    • +3

The Mi 8 SE will be smaller. Perhaps wait for that variant

      • +4

I thought you were joking until I looked it up. They really did also release an SE model. They may as well change their logo to an apple.

      • No ncf and some other missing extras…

        • +1

          Which phone has ncf?

    • +2

there used to be hoards of people claiming the original 3.5" iphones were the perfect size, fits so snugly in one hand, anything bigger and you're talking with a tablet stuck on your head etc etc, where they at now :P

      • +4

        What's an iPhone?

  • +3

Does this have a headphone jack?

    • +3

      No 3.5mm jack

      • +3

        how about 2.5mm jack?

        • +12

          It ain't got jack!

        • @xuqi:

So its worth Jack Shit ?

  • This appears to be a very good alternative to the oneplus6 in terms of specs and price; I wonder how good the camera is though?

      Conclusion

Xiaomi might not be the first name to think of when looking for a high-end smartphone, but the Mi 8 offers camera performance that is up there with the best. The Mi 8 camera is capable of super-fast and accurate autofocus, along with excellent exposures and detail rendition under a wide range of lighting conditions. It has good dynamic range and a genuinely usable telephoto option with good quality 2x magnification, as well as an effective simulated bokeh mode. The Mi 8 is also a solid performer in video mode — all of which, when put together, make for a highly attractive package and a good value proposition.

  • So not only is it missing headphone socket, band 28, wireless charging.. it costs even more than the Mi Mix 2s which has all of that.
Plus the Mi5 and Mi6 had infrared blasters. Going backwards.

    • +1

      mi6 didn't have a headphone socket either

and if it's similar to the mi6, then you're better off getting bluetooth headphones anyway, rather than using the adapter

    • +2

So it's like a pixel 2 except for band 28, much cheaper, better screen, better looking and half the price?

  • +2

Waiting for the explorer edition! Hoping it is worth the price difference. The Mi Mix 2S is almost perfect for me, but I can't get over the upside down camera thing.

EDIT: Somehow can't justify paying a price for the Explorer edition when for the same price I can get a P20 Pro or similar. IDK, food for thought.

    • +1

I wouldn't touch the p20 personally, Huawei had never done very well with top tier phones, let alone updates. Just wait for international version and there is no competition.

    • how much is shipping?

      • +1

$524 usd including DHL shipping = $497.8 after 5% cashrewards
Yours is $523.26 usd including DHL shipping = $510.17 after 2.5% cashrewards
Even yours with free economy shipping = $504.075 after 2.5% cashrewards

But sure, neg away at my comment. I'm not in the market for a phone without band 28 but if I were, I know where I'd be buying mine.

a review here looks great for the price

    • Better than OP6

  • I've never bought a phone that doesn't come with google play and the rest. What's involved in making it work properly with my stuff? Will I have issues down the road with apps like bank apps not working due to security issues? I like the phone but I just want it to work without a lot of hassle.

    • This will come with Play store as all other Global phones from Xiaomi

      • but it says: "It's not installed with Google Play Store, google services, and multi-languages (Only English and Chinese).

Its operating system will be updated to MIUI 10 by OTA in late June."

        • +1

Global rom will come as they release in countries other than China. You can wait for that or get this phone, root and flash global rom when it comes out.

        • @Baron-K:

No need to root to install global ROM

        • Hmm, maybe I had to root to get of vendor rom my last Xiaomi phone came with?

      • This isn't the global version. I don't think they've announced any global versions yet.

    • Just based on my experience with Chinese version of xiaomi 6 and mix2, there won't be any issue to install Google Play and all other OZ apps. In addition, everyone talks about band 28 but I have not found any inconvenience surfing mobile internet without it.

One thing to mention though, there is no Australia in the country list….I have used Singapore instead.

    • +8

I got my previous phone from China, and it had the Chinese ROM.

Currently there is no international ROM for this phone and Google services will not work.

You can change to English, but most of the apps included are Chinese.
For it to be honestly usable outside of calls, you'll need to install the international ROM. To do so, you'll need to not only wait till the rom is released, but then wait for permission to unlock the phone, then forced 24(or maybe 48) hour cool down period, THEN you can install the international ROM.

All in all, I honestly don't think it is worth it at this time. I look forward to perhaps getting this phone if the max 3 doesn't live up to my expectations, but for now it's a pass.

Hope that helps - definitely a great phone going forward, but not yet outside of China

      • Thanks, that was helpful.

      • I use CMCC version of xiaomi 6 so it calls my curiosity that why Google services not working on your xiaomi.

I used another brand Meizu before and google frameworks were provided in Meizu store. So no problems to user Google services on both of my Chinese phones.

      • not 48 hours, now, they've increased to 15 days in order to unlock your bootloader. and yes, if you want to flash to global rom, you have to unlock your bootloader.

  • Why not go to China's xiaomi official website to buy this smart phone, the official price is 2699rmb, only 540aud for 6+64…Also more reliable than this third party website.

    • +9

      They ship to Australia?

  • +2

What's up with manufacturers skipping numbers these days?

What happened to the mi 7!?

    • Cos its their 8th anniversary apparently…

  • +7

    Band 28 whingers on deck

    • +1

Bloody tiresome isn't it? They can just go and spend 2 to 3 times the price for this coveted life changing feature and stop boring the rest of us.

      • +1

It is.. it is one of the first questions asked. I'm beginning to think people say it for the sake of it and dont even know all about it.

  • +8

I thought the point of buying Xiaomi was they're cheap.

This is like paying $50k for a Corolla?

    • +5

this might be the cheapest phone with SD845 chip.
Other phones with same chip might cost more than $1000.

    • +1

This is like paying $50k for a Corolla?

Apparently with the next gen Corolla there will be a hot hatch version, watch this space…

    • +2

1/3 price of pixel, galaxy s9, cheaper than op6, yet better than all?

  • +5

C'mon bring the B28 Taiwanese version of Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro

  • Why would you get this over a S8?

    • buy it and you would know why

  • Better dxomark score than iphone x. I would wait for the price to come down though.

  • Needs more notch comments.

    • +15

I'm notch sure what you mean.

    • No, more "No band 28" comments are more appropriate.

  • +1

if the explorer comes with b28 as an option, ill get that.
if not, i might just hold out another gen. Had the mi5 and now the mi6. the mi6 is great.

  • +1

Mi 8 will begin to sell at Sydney time 12:00pm on Jun 5th at its offical Chinese website. But normally due to the lack of stock on initial sell, the sell would end so quick within 1 to 2 minutes and Mi 8 will be sold out. If you want one, it's highly likely you have to buy from a third-party seller.

    • Will there be another model with b28?

      • +1

        There has been no announcement.

    • From the official stats, all Mi 8 of the first batch were sold out in 1 minute and 37 seconds today. There will be another open for selling at Sydney time 12:00pm on Jun 12th.

  • I feel like the fact that it has no google play services or store needs to be made a bit more prominent in the OP, as it's a deal breaker for almost every person lol. This phone hasn't even been confirmed for a global rom yet.

    • +1

It will definitely have global room. It's their flagship.

  • Wonder if I could trick my dear supreme waifu to think Mi8 is Apple iPhone X

    • Just be careful, they smell fear!
